LIV KRISTINE: ACOUSTIC SHOW

Liv Kristine’s annual Christmas concert has become a real tradition for herself and her fans. This year’s special acoustic show took place in Nagold on December 22nd. Nagold is a picturesque small town located 50 kilometers south of Stuttgart and is well known for its castle ruins and the historic town center with its many traditional timbered houses. As in the previous years, Liv chose the “Alte Seminarturnhalle“, actually an old gym used by the former teachers’ seminar in town as venue for her show. The former gym was built in the same way as the other historic houses in the city center, which contributed to the special atmosphere at the concert.

Liv and her band arrived in proper style in a huge nightliner that was parked outside the venue. As in the years before, it was a seated concert with chairs around small tables, which created a very intimate and cozy atmosphere among the audience. The lovely staff of the “Alte Seminarturnhalle” treated the audience with snacks and drinks before and during the concert.

As Liv had already announced a couple of days ahead of the show, the setlist included many cover versions, some Leaves’ Eyes songs and of course also songs from her solo albums but this time not a single Theatre of Tragedy song.

What made the concert that special were – on the one hand – the five cover versions sung by her that night. Besides her well-known and well-loved cover versions of Mike Oldfield’s To France and Scarborough Fair by Simon & Garfunkel, Liv performed her personal interpretation of the Black Sabbath classic Changes, that had already aroused a lot of interest among her fans after the two festivals in Lisbon and Madrid three weeks ago and can be considered also one of the many highlights of this very special evening. Her other two covers were also extremely well-received by the audience. Since Liv claims herself to be a huge Loreena McKennitt fan, she did a cover of The Bonny Swans which moved some people in the audience to tears. Liv’s highly emotional version of London Grammar’s Rooting for you also contributed to making the evening a once-in-a-lifetime experience for her fans.

On the other hand Liv and her band played many of her “old” songs in completely new versions. For example Liv had her guitarist Micki Richter as support for her interpretation of Pie Jesu and not a piano or cello as the years before. Other familiar tracks were played much faster than usual and therefore appeared in a completely different light than before.

One of my personal highlights was definitely being able to listen to the Leaves’ Eyes Track Nightshade from Symphonies of the Night live for the first time ever. Liv explained that being free from her former band also gives her the possibility to choose her setlist for the concerts according to her own wishes. For the first time ever Liv also sang Wonders from Skintight live on stage. Liv explained that the lyrics were about her childhood in Norway and about her gratitude towards her parents. She recalled an episode of her childhood, when a rose pearl accidently disappeared in her ear and showed up only four days later and she talked about her childhood fear of black panthers with yellow eyes under her bed.

Another all time favorite was Love Decay which Liv took as an occasion to state that love and freedom were the two most important things in her life at the moment.

Attentive fans might have recognized that there were some major changes in Liv’s acoustic band in comparison to the official posters that could be seen everywhere in Nagold. Micki Richter, who has also been part of Liv’s regular band for some time now, did an excellent job on his guitars and played an impressive intro for The Bonny Swans and contributed a lot to the special atmosphere during an instrumental performance of an Irish folk song. Since Elvya, who was supposed to support Liv on hammered dulcimer, had to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances, Micki’s bandmate Markus Engel from Krayenzeit, a German medieval/folk band, stepped in at short notice and showed his impressive talent by easily switching from his cittern to pipes and keyboards and pianos during the whole concert. Mike da Silva on drums supported Liv and her band during two songs only, Heiko Gläser from the local medieval band Tinnitus Brachialis was hired only four days before the show and managed to learn all her songs on percussions at short notice and had his first rehearsals with the other musicians just hours before the concert.

Liv’s concerts in Nagold have always had a very special atmosphere and have also become a fixed date for all her fans and friends. Among those 140 visitors there were many familiar faces from other concerts and from various fan clubs from (almost) all over the world. Two fans from Chile had undisputedly the longest journey and there were also many fans from all across Europe, from Italy, Denmark, Greece, the Netherland, Belgium, France and all parts of Germany.

Liv’s stage outfit consisted of a red blouse (a last minute buy) and red high heels. The only thing people might criticize about the concert is the fact that due to the last minute changes regarding the guest musicians and the setlist the actual concert only took a bit longer than one hour. Liv compensated for this short concert by joining the audience for more that three (!) hours to chat with her fans, sign posters and booklets and to pose for pictures with fans. Many “new” fans were visibly moved by her sweet and amiable nature and the way she talks to and cares for them.

Since the concert seems to have been a big success, chances are good that we can return to Nagold next December for another very special and unique concert in this amazing venue.

La carrera de Kari Rueslatten resulta apasionante. Con The 3rd and the Mortal llegó al corazón de mucha gente y con su carrera en solitario ha conseguido un estilo muy personal. Alejada del Metal en cualquiera de sus vertientes Kari edita «To the North» (http://empirezone.es/2015/10/14/kari-rueslatten-to-the-north/), un trabajo donde la artista renace nuevamente.

El pasado 22 de Octubre salió al mercado “To the North”. ¿Qué tal la experiencia de grabarlo en los famosos Parr Street Studios de Liverpool, y cómo fue el proceso?
Estaba un poco nerviosa cuando llegué al estudio pensando en todos los grandes álbumes que se han grabado allí, como por ejemplo el “Parachutes” de Coldplay. Pero se respiraba una atmósfera muy relajada, por lo que me sentí como en casa muy rápidamente.
Hice los arreglos de todas las canciones estrechamente con los músicos, y lo grabamos todo en directo. Cuando grabas canciones en directo siempre les añades un nervio extra y una chispa especial. Compongo en el piano y hago que todo esté listo antes de encontrarme con los músicos.

¿Estás contenta con el resultado?
Sí, estoy muy contenta. Tenía una idea en la cabeza de cómo quería que sonase el disco, y se la describí a Jostein Ansíes, el productor, quien junto con los músicos hizo un excelente trabajo, comprendiendo qué es lo que pretendía conseguir.

¿Cuánto tiempo has estado trabajando en las canciones?
Empecé a componer poco después de terminar mi anterior álbum, “Time to Tell”.

¿Puedes explicar a nuestros lectores sobre qué tratan el disco y las canciones?
Siempre me ha inspirado la música folk noruega y la naturaleza, la oscuridad y su melancolía, pero también la belleza que lo rodea todo; la melancolía me resulta muy bella. Esto siempre ha sido parte de mi inspiración cuando escribo canciones, está en el núcleo de mis composiciones, y por lo tanto también en “To The North”. También me fascina el comportamiento humano, por qué hacemos las elecciones que hacemos, a veces fatales y con horribles consecuencias. Despierta mi curiosidad qué esta pasando en el interior de cada uno.

El disco contiene una versión muy especial de “Turn, Turn, Turn”. ¿Cómo surgió hacerla?
¡Gracias! Un buen amigo mío, Arild Juul, es quien hizo la versión. Es un fantástico fotógrafo, y creo que capturó mi música en esa versión y que va muy bien con el resto de canciones del álbum.

Todos tus discos tienen un toque diferente, con el común denominador de una voz única. ¿Hay algo que haga a este disco diferente de los demás?
Sí. Considero que se me conoce por mi curiosidad ante diferentes expresiones musicales. Quería que “To The North” fuese una continuación de “Time To Tell”, pero que fuese más lejos, ampliando la expresión musical y también empujando la voz y la vibración general más hacia sus límites. Mi objetivo era que la expresión musical fuese más oscura y mas pesada que en “Time To Tell”.

¿Puedes contarnos alguna curiosidad relativa al álbum?
Lo primero que hice para este álbum fue el título, “To The North”. A partir de ahí, compuse las canciones con el título como guía. Quería que este disco fuese una “banda sonora del norte”.

Hay un lapso de tiempo de nueve años entre “Other People’s Stories” y “Time To Tell”. ¿Qué hiciste durante esos años? Después de “Other People’s Stories”, ¿querías dejar la música para siempre? Si es así, ¿qué te hizo volver?
Si, realmente decidí que me dedicaría a otras cosas durante un tiempo. En primer lugar, quería formar una familia, y también comencé a estudiar Psicología. Con el paso de los años, nunca pensé que volvería a la música de nuevo, pero entonces conocí a Tuomas Holopainen de Nightwish, hace ahora tres años. Fue un encuentro muy inspirador, que me dio la chispa para empezar otra vez. Estoy muy contenta de tener la música de nuevo en mi vida; me siento mucho más completa como persona.

¿Cómo ves tu etapa con The 3rd And The Mortal ahora, con el paso de los años?
Cuando echo la vista atrás sólo recuerdo los buenos momentos. Éramos todos muy buenos amigos, haciendo la música que queríamos escuchar y tocar, y sencillamente lo pasamos bien.

Has estado ocupada últimamente. Háblanos sobre lo que has estado haciendo durante este último año.
Sí, ¡Hay mucho que quiero hacer y muy poco tiempo para hacerlo! Es maravilloso estar en la música de nuevo. He estado haciendo canciones y grabando un nuevo disco, dando conciertos y tocando en festivales, y por supuesto ¡Girando con Anneke y Liv Kristine como The Sirens!

¿Cómo ha sido la grabación de los vídeos? En “Turn Turn Turn” aparece un bebé adorable, y en “Battle Forevermore” se te ve serena y feliz, y también muy cómoda frente a la cámara.
Sí, tienes razón; me gusta hacer vídeos. Estoy especialmente contenta con “Turn, Turn, Turn”, en el que la maravillosa niña pequeña de un querido amigo hace el papel principal.

¿Cómo surgió montar The Sirens? ¿Os conocíais? ¿Tenéis planes para el futuro?
No nos conocíamos personalmente, pero sí como artistas. The Sirens comienza porque Anneke y Liv querían hacer un proyecto juntas. Al mismo tiempo, Anneke y yo hablábamos en los mismos términos, así que decidimos que deberíamos hacer algo juntas las tres. Nuestro punto en común era el ser todas precursoras con nuestras primeras bandas, The 3rd And The Mortal, The Gathering, y Theatre Of Tragedy. The Sirens es una banda concebida para el directo, donde tocamos canciones de nuestras antiguas bandas y carreras en solitario, y nuevo material como “The Sirens”. Nos hemos divertido mucho estando de gira juntas, así que espero que habrá nuevas posibilidades de tocar juntas en el futuro!

Uno de tus conciertos más recientes ha sido en tu ciudad natal, Trondheim, con The Sirens, y junto a Nightwish ¿Qué tal la experiencia?
¡Fue una experiencia maravillosa! Me sentí como si estuviese volando durante todo el show, y el día siguiente también. Fue genial tener a las chicas en Sverersborg. Tocamos en un maravilloso escenario situado en el exterior de un museo de Folk, y tocar con la fantástica gente de Nightwish… ¡Fue sencillamente genial!

Te has rodeado de grandes músicos para grabar “To The North” ¿Van a girar contigo o presentarás un set acústico?
Sí, son geniales, y me encantaría girar con ellos; espero que en algún momento lo hagamos. La gira ahora ha sido contratada con pequeños e íntimos clubes, así que tendrá un enfoque acústico.

¿Dónde presentas el álbum? ¿Alguna posibilidad de visitar España? Has dicho que Sudamérica es muy especial para ti, y nos consta que mucha gente de allí estará leyendo esto. ¿Planeas volver?
La gira incluye Noruega, Alemania, Holanda, y espero que añadamos más países europeos el próximo año; ¡España sería maravilloso! Sí, Sudamérica está definitivamente en mi lista de deseos para el año que viene.

¿Podremos escuchar canciones del pasado en esta gira?
Sí. He creado un set list compuesto por nuevas canciones de “To The North”, canciones de todos mis anteriores álbumes en solitario, y también he añadido al repertorio una canción de The 3rd And The Mortal.

KATATONIA
“SANCTITUDE”

Nunca he seguido con detenimiento la carrera de Katatonia y pese a ello me siento a ver el DVD de “Sanctitude” y me quedo embobado y el tiempo se detiene a cada nota que tocan. Porque en eléctrico la banda suena muy bien pero en acústico es un escándalo. Me pregunto por qué no grabarán en ese formato con más frecuencia.

El concierto fue grabado en la Union Chapel, una iglesia del siglo XIX de Londres, con lo cual el sonido es imponente y la puesta en escena estricta y rigurosa, con velas a los pies de cada componente y luces tenues. Si a eso añadimos que Jonas Renske ofrece una de las mejores interpretaciones de su vida y un repertorio que repasa casi toda su discografía, obtenemos un concierto memorable. El colofón lo pone la presencia en el escenario de Silje Wergeland de The Gathering, que interpreta con ellos “The one you are looking for is not here” en un duelo vocal bello y catártico.
