No me gusta escribir en caliente. Me gusta dejar reposar mis emociones y mis opiniones aunque se pierdan detalles por el camino. No me gusta dejarme llevar por la euforia o la decepción del momento. Asumo el riesgo, y con Liv Kristine más aún ¿por qué? Porque hay muchos condicionantes como la amistad y la profesionalidad, suya como artista y mía como informador, la credibilidad de mis textos, la rigurosidad y el criterio a la hora de escribir y lo difícil que resulta todo sin dejarse llevar (excesivamente) por las emociones.

Han pasado ya unas semanas desde el concierto de Alte Seminarturnhalle y he tenido tiempo de procesar lo vivido en Nagold aquel 20 de diciembre de 2025, en lo musical y en lo personal porque vivir este evento es volver a casa con el tubito del amor lleno.

La experiencia empieza con mi despertador sonando a las 03h30 de la mañana y un avión que aterriza en Stuttgart a las 08h30. Aprovecho el vuelo para dormir; los horarios son inmejorables para aprovechar el día al máximo. Hace años me enamoré de esta ciudad en época navideña por cuanto resulta preciosa, embriagadora y que te atrapa en un ambiente de mágico.
En esta ocasión decido cambiar un poco mis hábitos. Me explico, vuelvo a visitar la tienda de discos Second Hand, un templo para los melómanos que visito cada año, y las secciones de discos de Media Markt (antigua Saturn) y Müller y… sí salgo con las manos bien llenas. Decidí dejar el mercado de Navidad para el día siguiente ya que mi mujer y mis hijos venían a pasar dos días a Stuttgart. Les había explicado las lindeces que esconde la ciudad en estas fechas y como ellos querían verlo y yo enseñárselo, nada mejor descubrirlo juntos. En su lugar decidí irme a mediodía hacia Nagold para poder acabar de ver un pueblo precioso que siempre había dejado a medias y, de paso, ver la prueba de sonido de Liv.

Así fue como pasé por el hotel (este año me hospedé en el Ibis y la experiencia fue muy gratificante, realmente lo recomiendo), dejé el equipaje y me dirigí a Alte Seminarturnhalle. Liv me había dicho que el soundcheck era a las 15h30 y no quería llegar tarde. Entré por la puerta de atrás, como casi siempre, y tras cruzar la puerta de cristal me encontré a Liv, que salía. Un abrazo casi infinito, sonrisas, besos y un “pasa, que están todos dentro”. Cruzo la puerta de madera y allí me encuentro a toda la banda. Saludos calurosos con Sancha y Roland y muy cordiales con Bjorn y Tobi. Mientras ultiman los preparativos, me encuentro con Andrea, una de las mejores amigas de Liv, y su hija Hannah. Vemos juntos la prueba de sonido que, a todas luces suena fantástica y tras ella departimos con Liv. También con Michael, su marido.
Ajustan el sonido con “Amor Vinci Omnia” en la que Michael participa también, una hipnótica “12th February” y la renombrada “Ave Satana”, que viene a ser el “Ave Maria”. Pero nos aguardaba una sorpresa cuando de repente vemos que Liv y Sancha se dirigen a la mesa de sonido. Hablan con el técnico y se sientan frente a él y de repente empiezan a interpretar “Lotus” en acústico. Sinceramente, pensé que la había cantado allí para afinar bien el sonido y pulir los detalles.

Me marcho del viejo gimnasio y visito el pueblo, que se muestra frente a mí en todo su esplendor, desnuda sus encantos, sus calles de cuento, su pequeño mercado navideño entorno a la pista de hielo y un escenario donde se programaban muchos conciertos gratuitos cada día, y unas tiendas que yacían cerradas, en su mayoría, desde las 17h00, la Stadtkirche (la catedral de Nagold)… Maravilloso pese a que el grueso del mercado ya estaba desmontado. Un paseo precioso, relajado y que me permitió terminar de enamorarme de un pueblo que vive en la calma.

Y tras unos minutos de relajación volví a la sala, ahora ya para ver el concierto. De camino, me escribe Pascal y me dice que me tienen sitio guardado en la mesa de delante del escenario. En la puerta pronto me reconocen “ah, sí, tú eres el chico de España, pasa, todo está arreglado con tu invitación”. Nada más entrar me cruzo con mi querida amiga Mariël Rohrbach y nos fundimos en un abrazo de esos que dan vida, con Frans, su pareja, y con Chris. Definitivamente la velada no podía tener mejor inicio. Sigo avanzando y alcanzo a ver a Pascal, Bernardt y Sandra, con quien compartimos idioma. Me siento con ellos, por supuesto, y nos ponemos al día. Con Pascal había coincidido en Nijmegen el 31 de agosto, en el concierto de The Gathering celebrando el 25 aniversario de ‘Mandylion’. A lo lejos veo a Uli y Tina pero espero a saludarlos pues Miracle Flair empezaban su actuación.

Reconozco dos cosas antes de proseguir. La primera es que apenas me había informado de Miracle Flair antes de viajar a Nagold. La segunda es que, generalmente, me gustan, y mucho, los teloneros que tiene Liv allí; me acuerdo por ejemplo de Propjekt Ju, Barfuss o el propio Roland Bliessener.
Así las cosas, este cuarteto suizo de Symphonic Power Metal comandado por Nicole Hartmann nos ofreció una suerte de greatest hits con especial protagonismo de su último trabajo ‘Synchronism’.

“In charge”, “The untold” o “Dying existence” hicieron las delicias del respetable y me consta que varios espectadores empezaron a seguirlos en Spotify mientras les veían actuar. Tener un estilo relativamente parecido a lo que Liv había podido hacer con Leaves’ Eyes en algún momento hizo que el público se viniera arriba. Gozaron de un sonido y una iluminación fantásticas y la banda se entregó sobre el escenario. La gran protagonista del concierto fue Nicole, su vocalista, que estuvo espectacular y fue creciendo canción a canción.
Miracle Flair es una banda con mucho que ofrecer y con un gran porvenir. Si puedes verlos en directo no te los pierdas, no te arrepentirás.

Y llegó la hora de Liv Kristine. A riesgo de hacerme repetitivo, cada uno de sus conciertos en Nagold es una experiencia, una caja de sorpresas. Porque muchas de las cosas importantes de la carrera musical de Liv pasan en Nagold, rodeada de su gente, jugando en “casa” y con todo a favor. Ahí Liv es imparable, invencible y esta noche en Nagold volvió a demostrarlo.

Había visto el setlist semanas antes del concierto y, honestamente, tenía dudas sobre cómo iban a encajar los temas.
Tras la intro de rigor, la apertura era el corte que da título a su último trabajo, “Amor vincit omnia”, toda una declaración de intenciones y en la que tuvo como invitado a su marido, Michael Hansen. La complicidad entre ambos es tal que acaban dándose un beso al final de la canción. No podía haber un inicio mejor.

Para “Ode to life pristine” bajaron las revoluciones y consiguieron un resultado óptimo en el que reinó la voz de Liv, desnuda, íntima, profunda. Sin duda una de las mejores composiciones de Sascha para este trabajo. Aunque el público estaba entregado a la causa de la noruega desde antes de empezar el concierto, canciones como “Love decay” levantaron el ánimo más aún.
Y en eso que llegaron dos de los momentos más celebrados por sus fans, los que la siguen desde hace años. Primero con “Siren” que, a la postre, sería uno de los pocos recuerdos a su trayectoria con Theatre of Tragedy. Cierto que muchos desearíamos un repertorio exclusivo de su banda madre, pero no es menos cierto que su carrera dura ya 32 años y tiene muchos highlights en todas sus etapas. Y, después, con “Norwegian lovesong”, la primera canción que grabó con Leaves’ Eyes y cuya letra autobiográfica es esencial para sus fans.

El concierto crecía y crecía mientras Liv repartía sonrisas, “Saphiere heaven” nos acercó la figura de Roland, a los teclados, a un primer plano en una canción que te arranca una sonrisa con su estribillo catártico. Qué gusto da ver a Liv con una banda tan cohesionada, hecha a su medida y que se entiende a la perfección y es que poco se habla del excelente trabajo que realizan también Björn Etzel a la batería y Tobias Glier al bajo.
Con “Shaolin me” y “River of diamonds” rescataron el anterior disco de Liv y supimos agradecer dos cortes capitales en sus repertorios. En “River of diamonds” Sascha se encargó de las voces masculinas y Liv y él volvieron a mostrar una conexión que les está dando grandes frutos, tanto en estudio como en directo.
Hace mucho tiempo que lo digo, los conciertos de Liv acostumbran a ser una caja de sorpresas y temas que no te habían llamado la atención antes, lo hacen ahora. Me sucedió con “Hold it with your life”. Quizá en disco no le había prestado la atención que merecía; quizá en ese contexto quedaba diluido para mí. Lo cierto es que en Nagold me resultó uno de los momentos más intensos y pasionales de la noche. Maravillosa.
Y la primera parte se cerraba con “12th February”, otro de esos momentos mágicos, desde el teclado inicial de Roland. Una interpretación para escuchar con los ojos cerrados, para dejarte llevar, y con una percusión que te hace volar. Si “Hold it with your life” fue mágica, “12th February” resultó catártica.
Haciendo balance de la primera parte del concierto, creo que ofreció tantos elementos de análisis que era imposible no caer rendido a la sorpresa, a la sobriedad y a la delicadeza que acabábamos de ver.

Para el bis quedaron tres clásicos y una sorpresa. El primer tramo con “Venus” y “Der tanz der schatten” pusieron los ánimos y el ambiente por las nubes. Michael volvió a escena para cubrir la voz gutural mientras abajo del escenario el público estaba engorilado, cantando y en éxtasis. Siempre son éstos dos momentos épicos y muy esperados en sus conciertos.
Y en eso que llega la gran sorpresa de la noche cuando de repente se vacía el escenario. Desaparecen los músicos y muchos piensan que va a haber un nuevo bis. De repente, Liv y Sascha, desde uno de los laterales del viejo gimnasio, se van hasta la mesa de sonido. Entonces lo entiendo todo. Lo que habían ensayado en la prueba de sonido no era casualidad. Se sientan, se acomodan, en dos taburetes. Sascha toma su guitarra acústica y empiezan los primeros acordes de “Lotus”. En efecto, estaban interpretando esta canción en acústico desde la mesa de sonido, entre el público, que no daba crédito. Sonrisas eternas y una nube de teléfonos móviles para inmortalizar un momento mágico, de los más especiales que hemos vivido en Nagold en todos los años que Liv lleva tocando aquí.
Y el cierre, como siempre, llegó con la renombrada “Ave Satan” que supo a gloria y con Liv dando de do de pecho y llegando a notas altísimas.

Así terminaba un concierto mágico. Otro más. Otra noche para el recuerdo. Un evento que siempre es muy especial y que tarda tanto en llegar. Toca esperar otro año entero para volver a encontrarnos en Nagold. 2026 marca el 15 aniversario de Liv en Alte Seminarturnhalle. Quien sabe lo que sucederá hasta entonces, quien sabe lo que viviremos entonces. Lo que sí sabemos es que los que hemos estado en Nagold’25 haremos lo posible para regresar el próximo año porque la navidad para Liv y todos nosotros no empieza el 24 de diciembre, lo hace el día que Liv actúa en Alte Seminarturnhalle y allí tenemos nuestra particular cena de Nochebuena.

Gracias por tanto a Pascal Deruyck y Bernardt Thant (Bélgica), Mariel Rohrbach y Frans Neelen (Países Bajos), Pete y su hija (Francia), Chris Smiedi, Uli, Andrea y Hannah, y Marvin Römisch (Alemania), Tina Jensen (Dinamarca), Sandra Vande Velde (Perú / Bélgica). Con todos ellos he vivido grandes momentos pero varias cosas me han marcado especialmente este año: la conversación que tuve con Sandra entre conciertos, tan personal y conmovedora, que me sirve para apreciar y valorar su amistad y la vida profundamente; y por otra parte, los momentos vividos con Mariël, mi dulce y querida Mariël, una mujer tan frágil y delicada como imponente, y con la que tengo una conexión mágica que nos lleva a reír y llorar cada vez que nos encontramos. Además de todo eso están los encuentros con Liv y sus chicos porque cuando llego a Nagold me siento como en casa con Tobi Glier, un tipazo como Roland Bliessener, con un afable Björn Etzel, con un tipo tan especial y amable cono Sascha Dannenberger, con un amigo como Michael Hansen que te da unos abrazos increíbles, y con mi amiga Liv Kristine, que hace que cada uno de nuestros encuentros sea más especial que ningún otro con su cariño, su sonrisa, sus palabras y su mirada porque juntos somos un equipo. Porque con toda esta gente somos una familia.
Gracias a todos por hacer de Nagold’25 un evento tan especial.

P.D.: Ahora han pasado ya unas semanas de aquella tarde – noche – madrugada maravillosa y en casa veo fotos y vídeos de conocidos que viven en Nagold y Stuttgart y veo que hace mucho frío y nieva y yo añoro aquella imponente nevada que me encontré allí en 2022 y los -10ºC que hacía fuera de Alte Seminarturnhalle. En 2026 se cumplen 15 años de la primera actuación de Liv en Nagold y si echo la vista atrás veo la gran cantidad de historias y anécdotas que acumulo de mis viajes para ver a Liv y, especialmente, a Nagold. Ainsss… bendita nostalgia, bendito presente… bendito futuro.

Sascha Dannenberger es un guitarrista de estudio con una dilatada carrera de 30 años como músico tanto de estudio y de directo con varias bandas. Ha recorrido medio mundo y tiene su estudio en el que trabaja en la sombra.
Desde hace un tiempo trabaja estrechamente con Liv Kristine y se ha encargado de la composición de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ y el resultado salta a la vista con una colección de canciones que abarcan una paleta de colores muy amplia y donde la sensibilidad reina por encima de todo.
Charlamos con Sascha, un tipo encantador, para que nos revele algunos de los entresijos del nuevo disco de Liv Kristine.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): Creo que has compuesto toda la música de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ ¿Cuánto tiempo te ha llevado este proceso? ¿Qué es lo que más has disfrutado y lo que menos?
SASCHA DANNENBERGER (SD): Creo que el proceso complete me ha llevado como dos años. Ha habido periodos de tiempos en los que he tenido más o menos tiempo para escribir canciones. Las primeras 10 o 15 canciones las escribe en los dos primeros meses. Finalmente hubo 20 canciones de las que Liv escogió 11. La mayoría del tiempo lo dediqué a la mezcla porque en las canciones de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ hay varios estilos diferentes y tuve que encontrar un equilibrio para todo el disco. Lo que menos tiempo me ha llevado es todo lo relativo a la guitarra, que es mi instrumento principal desde hace 30 años.

EM: ¿Tuviste total Libertad a la hora de componer o Liv te iba dando algunas indicaciones de lo que quería? Imagino que cambiabais demos e ideas de todo lo que ibas escribiendo…
SD: Cuando todo empezó, le pregunté a Liv si había algún patrón a seguir. Eso es algo que aprendí en mis anteriores trabajos como músico de sesión, lo cual es realmente útil para tener un buen punto de partida. Liv me envió una lista de canciones que le gustaban y en qué dirección quería ir y yo le iba enviando mis ideas. Si Liv elegía una, era sobre todo porque me pedía algo instrumental, como que doblara el estribillo del final o que pusiera versos algo más largos. Ambos tenemos casi los mismos gustos musicales.

EM: ¿Estás satisfecho con el resultado final?
SD: Estás preguntando a la persona equivocada porque soy un perfeccionista y si no hubiera aprendido a parar en ciertos momentos aún podría estar trabajando en las primeras canciones que escribí…
Grabar un disco es como pintar un cuadro: captas el momento.
Pero respondiendo a tu pregunta, estoy muy orgulloso del resultado final.

EM: Encuentro ciertos paralelismos entre este nuevo disco y ‘Skintight’ ¿ha sido una inspiración para ti?
SD: He intentado no escuchar mucho del increíble bagaje musical de Liv. He escuchado más a artistas que tanto a Liv como a mí nos gustan y en los que podía encontrar puntos en común con nuestra visión del disco.

EM: ¿Cuáles son tus canciones favoritas del disco?
SD: Me encanta que todas se conviertan en especiales, pero “Melange” significa algo más para mí pues fue la primera canción que escribí para Liv.
“Ode to life pristine” también es una canción muy especial para mí porque escribe la parte instrumental en la mañana que leí en el periódico que Putin había invadido Ucrania, algo que nunca expliqué a Liv y ella convirtió eso en algo positivo e inspirador.

EM: Para la gente que no esté familiarizada contigo ¿puedes hablarles de tu bagaje musical?
SD: Empecé a tocar la guitarra con 15 años. Vi el video clip de “November Rain” de Guns N’ Roses e instantáneamente me enamoré de tocar la guitarra. Me aficioné a la guitarra y practicaba 10 horas al día cuando podía y pronto empecé a recibir clases de un profesor que estudió en el GIT Los Ángeles. Después de tres años me subió a los escenarios con sus proyectos y mi primer concierto fue ante 1000 personas en mi 18 cumpleaños. Dos años después, me dispuse a ejercer con él de telonero para Thin Lizzy en su gira de 2000. Después de eso, estudié en el M.G.I. de Munich y desde entonces he tocado en muchas bandas y varios estilos. Nunca separo la música de la gente que la hace si la música se hace desde el corazón.
He tocado la guitarra en varios discos, he hecho giras por todo el mundo y he actuado en escenarios muy pequeños y muy grandes. A principios de este año también obtuve mi diploma como ingeniero de audio.
Llevo 30 años dedicándome a la música y ha habido buenos momentos y también otros duros, pero estoy contento por no haber perdido nunca mi pasión y de seguir haciéndolo en tiempos como estos en los que la música ha perdido la mayor parte de su magia para el gran público.

EM: Creo que Liv y tú tenéis una química especial en el escenario y ahora veo que en estudio, también ¿Cuán especial resulta trabajar con Liv?
SD: Con la primera llamada telefónica que tuvimos ya sentí como si nos conociéramos hace muchos años. Ella es una persona muy humilde, sobre todo si tenemos en cuenta todo lo que ha hecho en su vida. Me encanta que tenga la mente abierta en todas las direcciones sin perder de vista lo que realmente quiere. Como compartimos las mismas perspectivas musicales no se trata de una cuestión de trabajo sino más bien como pintar juntos un único cuadro.

EM: Y, por último, ¿Qué esperas de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’?
SD: Nada, creo que es la Muerte del arte cuando tu empiezas hacienda música para otros y no para mí. Siempre pongo toda mi alma en todo lo que hago y cuando puedo llegar a alguien con ello me siento más que feliz… pero ante todo tengo que llegar a mí mismo.

Sascha Dannenberger is a studio guitarist with a 30-year long career as both a studio and live musician with various bands. He has travelled halfway around the world and has his own studio where he works in the shadows.
For some time now he has been working closely with Liv Kristine and has been in charge of the composition of ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ and the result is clear to see with a collection of songs that cover a very wide palette of colours and where sensitivity reigns supreme.
We chatted with Sascha, a charming guy, to reveal some of the ins and outs of Liv Kristine’s new album.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): I think you had composed all ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ music. How long did it take to you? What did it take to you the most and the least?
SASCHA DANNENBERGER (SD): I think the whole process started about 2 years ago. There were periods where I had some more or less time to write songs. The first 10 to 15 songs I wrote in the first 2 months. In the end there where about 20 songs and Liv picked 11 from them. The most time I spent on mixing because the songs of Amor Vincit Omnia were in so many different styles, I had to find an overall sound for the album. The least time I needed for all the guitar stuff – it´s my main instrument for over 30 years now.

EM: Did you have total freedom to write the songs or did Liv give you some indications? I imagine you were exchanging opinions and demos of what you were writing…
SD: When it all started, I asked Liv for a moodboard. It´s something I learned from previous songwriting sessions I´ve done, which is a really helpful thing to get a good start point. Liv send me a playlist of songs she likes and in which direction she wants to go and from there on I just sent her my ideas. If she picked one there where mainly some instrumental requests from her, like I want that chorus in the end doubled or a longer vers. We both share nearly the same musical taste.

EM: Are you satisfied with the final result?
SD: You´re asking the wrong one – I´m a perfectionist and if I hadn´t learned to stop at a certain point I would still be working on my very first songs I wrote…
Recording an album is like painting a picture – you are catching a moment.
But to answer your question – I´m very proud of what came out in the end.

EM: I can find some parallels with Liv’s ‘Skintight’ album. Has it been an inspiration for you?
SD: I tried not to hear too much into Liv´s incredible Backing catalogue. I´ve listened more to artists she likes and where I can find contact points to our vision of the album.

EM: What’s about your favorites songs of the album?
SD: I love how all of them became something special – but Melange means a little bit more to me, because it was the very first song I wrote for Liv.
Ode to life pristine is also very special song to me because I wrote the instrumental part in the morning as I read in newspaper that Putin invaded Ukraine – I never told Liv and she turned it into something so positive and inspiring.

EM: To the people that are not familiar with you. Can you please tell them about your musical background?
SD: I started playing guitar when I was 15. I saw the November Rain Video from Guns N Roses and instantly fell in love with guitar playing. I became quite a guitar nerd, practicing 10hours a day when I could and soon started getting lessons from a teacher who studied at the GIT Los Angeles. After three years he took me on stage with all his projects, so that my first show in front of 1000 people was at my 18th birthday. Two years later I was able to play as opener for the Thin Lizzy tour 2000 with him. After that I studied at the M.G.I. Munich and from then on i played in so many bands in so different styles. I never separate music from the people who are doing it – if someone makes music from the heart I’m with it. I‘ve played guitar on several records, did some touring worldwide and played from very small to very big stages. At the beginning of this year I finished my diploma as audio engineer, too. I‘m doing music for living for over 30 years now – there were hard times and there where good ones…but I‘m happy, that I never lost my passion and I‘m still able to do it in times like these, where music lost most of it‘s magic for the mainstream.

EM: I think Liv and you have a special chemistry on stage and now in the studio too. What’s special about working with Liv?
SD: With the very first phonecall i talked to her it felt like we‘ve known us for years. She‘s such a humble person – even more if you have in mind, what she has already done in her lifetime. I love how she‘s open minded in all directions without loosing her sight of what she really wants. Since we share the same musical visions it‘s not really a working situation – it‘s more like painting on one picture together.

EM: What do you expect about ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’?
SD: Nothing – I think, it´s the death of art when you start making music for others than yourself. I always put my whole soul in everything I do – and when I can touch someone with it I´m more than happy…but first at all it has to touch myself.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): ¿Por qué escogiste el blanco y negro para la portada del disco? ¿Crees que ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ es el disco más oscuro de Liv Kristine en solitario?
MARIËL ROHRBACH (MR): Hacer la portada en blanco y negro fue idea de Liv.
Las dos nos inspiramos en un retrato que encontramos pero lo mezclamos con nuestras propias visiones, un ángulo diferente y pensamos que sería increíble que Liv tuviera el pelo suelto. Para ello utilizamos un secador que Liv sujetaba a su espalda mientras hacíamos la foto.
Sobre si es su disco más oscuro… por lo que sé y lo que he escuchado creo que la canción que abre el disco con Michael es, definitivamente una de sus canciones más oscuras. Desde el punto de vista letrístico, Liv profundiza bastante, pero no solo en temas “oscuros”. También hay canciones maravillosas sobre el amor y la naturaleza que están mezclados con un sonido más oscuro. Aun así, creo que en los discos anteriores (‘River of diamonds’ y ‘Vervain’) también hay oscuridad. Pero Liv también es luz y encontrarás ambas vertientes en el disco.
Me encanta pensar que la música de Liv no se puede encasillar solo en un concepto sino que es la fuerza de Liv para mantenerse fiel a su corazón y, musicalmente, puede ir en cualquier dirección y todo se acaba mezclando. Este disco puede ser oscuro pero también tiene clase, es maduro y ligero.

EM: En nuestra entrevista previa, para ‘River of diamonds’ me explicaste que estuviste muy nerviosa porque Liv idolatras a Liv y es una verdadera amiga para ti ¿Ha sido diferente esta vez? ¿Estuviste más relajada?
MR: ¡SÍ! Pero aun así, en el fondo, puedo tener un poco de ansiedad – a veces tus mayores pasiones son también cosas que te asustan un poco. Esta vez íbamos más preparadas y sabía que Liv también esperaba fotos en blanco y negro así que me traje un fondo negro pop up. Hicimos todas las fotos dentro de su casa y sólo usé la luz que entraba por la ventana y eso hizo que fuera muy natural. Lo que también ayudó MUCHO es que nos sentamos juntas esa misma noche e hicimos una selección de todas las fotos que hicimos. Y a partir de ellas hicimos una nueva selección, de modo que sólo me quedé con las que podía editar. Así, en lugar de enviarle todas mis fotos en un pequeño archivo, llegué a casa con exactamente las fotos que tenía que editar. Sabía cuáles debían ser en color y cuáles en blanco y negro. Tuve que editarlas rápidamente, pero lo conseguimos y podemos estar muy orgullosas del resultado.

EM: En esta occasion hiciste tres sesiones de fotos en un fin de semana con diferentes conceptos, iluminaciones, vestuarios y localizaciones ¿qué vertientes de Liv querías mostrar?
MR: Sólo tuvimos el sábado para hacer fotos. Liv ya había planeado el vestuario y los looks que quería. El posado fluyó con naturalidad y utilizamos lo que teníamos, como la silla. En las fotos con las manos cruzadas, Liv estaba sentada en el suelo y utilizamos el banco de su mesa para que apoyara los brazos. Y como ya he mencionado, el pelo ondulado se ha creado utilizando un secador. Liv también tenía en mente la idea del cuadro ‘Girl with the pearl’ (“La joven de la perla’ de Johannes Vermeer en el año 1665, ndr.). Inspirándose en él, Liv llevaba un pañuelo azul y dorado en el pelo y un chaleco de punto azul sobre los hombros. Aquí, yo tenía el flash apuntando al dorado del pañuelo para que se iluminara un poco. También hicimos una foto con la misma pose e iluminación que el cuadro. A Liv también se le ocurrió la idea de sostener una taza y ¡le encantó el resultado!
Al día siguiente le hicimos fotos a Micheal ¡y lo hizo muy bien! Era nuevo para él hacer esto ¡pero salieron increíbles!
Sólo espero retratar a Liv con la mayor pureza posible. Ese es mi único y verdadero objetivo.
Cuando estuvimos en Nagold el año pasado, también hicimos fotos de la banda y también del loto en las manos de Micheal. Esa la hice dentro del local justo antes de salir a hacer las fotos de la banda. Fuimos al castillo de Nagold y nunca antes había estado allí. Teníamos poco tiempo y tenía que colocar a cada miembro en un lugar determinado. Fue todo un reto, pero salió muy bien. Tuvimos mucha suerte con el tiempo ya que era finales de noviembre (aunque la lluvia habría quedado genial en las fotos, estábamos muy contentos con el sol, ya que tuvimos que caminar hasta allí).

EM: ¿Basaste el concepto de las sesiones en las nuevas canciones o quizá Liv ted io algunas ideas? ¿Cuál es la forma de trabajar con Liv?
MR: No había escuchado ninguna canción de antemano, algunas canciones ni siquiera estaban terminadas.
En este caso, Liv tenía una idea en mente, y los vestuarios, y teníamos nuestro retrato de inspiración. Tengo que asegurarme de tener la iluminación adecuada y luego ya veremos qué pasa. También tenía algunas fotos en Pinterest como inspiración, pero al final, lo que ves es realmente el resultado del flujo creativo que tuvimos juntas. A Liv le gusta ver las fotos justo después, las revisamos y vimos qué funciona y qué no. Y continuamos hasta que creemos que tenemos suficiente.

EM: Si has escuchado el disco ¿Qué opinas de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’? ¿Qué canciones te gustan más?
MR: ¡Me encanta la canción que da título al disco, con Michael! Y “Sapphire heaven” es otra de mis favoritas. Creo que, una vez más, este disco es muy personal y muy profundo que sale directo desde el corazón. Creo que hay que tener muchas agallas para cantar como Liv lo hace en “Ode to life Pristine”. Es muy frágil.

EM: Déjame preguntarte cómo sería la session de fotos perfecta con Liv ¿qué outfit y que localizaciones utilizarías?
MR: Oh esta es una pregunta difícil. ¡Creo que sería increíble tener una ubicación como un exuberante bosque verde con niebla o unos pocos rayos de sol, o tal vez en una playa de arena negra con rocas … o tal vez fotos bajo el agua sería increíble! Pero no tengo experiencia en eso. En cuanto al vestuario, Liv siempre hace fotos con sus vestidos. Si yo tuviera que elegir, cualquiera con el que Liv se sienta cómoda. Tal vez algo con telas muy fluidas que se levanten con el viento. Algo etéreo. O algo con un blazer negro de cintura ajustada, hombros puntiagudos y cadenas, casi como “Corporate Goth”. Oscuro, pero con clase.

EM: ¿Tienes planes de future con Liv?
MR: ¡Sí, los temenos, y serán en Noruega, algún día!

EM: Quizá haya fans de Liv que no estén familiarizados contigo así que me gustaría que les explicaras sobre tu pasión por la fotografía y donde pueden encontrar tus trabajos ¿tienes planes para trabajar con más bandas?
MR: Gracias ;-) Me llamo Mariël Rohrbach y soy de los Países Bajos. Mi primer concierto de Leaves’ Eyes fue en 2007 y allí me llevé mi pequeña cámara. Ese día me hice fan de Liv al instante. A lo largo de los años hice más fotos en sus conciertos y también en otros conciertos en los que me lo permitieron, y conseguí mi primera cámara DSLR. Después, siempre le he enviado las fotos. Poco me imaginaba que años más tarde me invitarían a hacer fotos de Liv. También fotografío bodas de vez en cuando, y tengo mi propia web: www.marielrohrbach.com. 


Hace poco mi cuñada me pidió que hiciera fotos de su banda de soul. También hago fotos de instagram para una amiga que tiene su propio salón de tratamiento de la piel. Me encantaría fotografiar a otras bandas también, pero no soy tan auto-promotora.

EM: ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta fotografiar en tus viajes personales?
MR: Sobre todo detalles de la naturaleza y de mi entorno, y especialmente de mis seres queridos cuando no miran o no saben que estoy allí. La mayoría de las veces, cuando vuelvo de viaje, casi no hay fotos mías (risas). Una vez fui a Viena y me hice una foto delante de un edificio mirando hacia arriba (para que se vieran todas las líneas de ese edificio). Cuando terminé, había una señora mayor con cara de confusión, sin saber qué era tan interesante. Pero ese es el recuerdo que tengo de esa foto. Todavía me hace sonreír.

INTERVIEW WITH MARIEL ROHRBACH

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): Why did you choose black & white for the front cover of the album? Do you think ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ is Liv Kristine’s darkest album as a solo?
MARIËL ROHRBACH (MR): The black and white cover was Liv’s own idea. We both were inspired by a portrait we came across, but blended that with our own visions, a different angle and we thought it would be amazing to have Liv’s hair flowing. (We used a blowdryer for that which Liv held herself behind her back on the picture).
If it is her darkest solo album, well, for as far as I know and heard, I think that the opening track with Micheal is definitely one of her darkest songs. Lyrically, Liv goes quite deep, but not only about “Dark” themes. There are also wonderful songs about love and nature. They are blended with a darker sound I believe. Still I think that on the previous albums (River of Diamonds and Vervain) there is darkness too. But Liv also is Light. You will find both on the album.
I just love to think that Liv’s music is not to be put in just one box. It is Liv’s strength to stay true to her heart, and musically it can go any way, yet still it all blends together. This album can be found dark, but it is also classy, mature and light.

EM: In our previous interview about ‘River of diamonds’ you told me that you were really nervous because Liv is an idol and a true friend for you. It has been different for this time? Were you more relaxed this time?
MR: YES! But still, deep down I can get a bit anxious- sometimes your biggest passions are also things that scare you a bit. This time, we were more prepared, I knew Liv was hoping for black and white pictures as well, and I got a black pop up background with me. We took all portraits inside her home, and I only used the light that came through the window, that kept it natural. What also helped a LOT is that we sat down together that same night, and made a selection of all pictures we took. And from those we made a new selection so I only kept the ones which I could edit. So instead of the previous time when I send her all my pictures in a small file, I got home with exactly the pictures I had to edit. I knew which ones were supposed to be in color and which ones black and white. I had to edit them quickly though, but we managed and we can be very proud of the results!

EM: On this time you did 3 photo shoots in one weekend, with different concepts, lighting, location and wardrobe, what sides of Liv did you want to show?
MR: We had only the Saturday to take pictures. Liv already had planned which outfits and looks she wanted. The posing was flowing naturally and we used what we had, like the chair. The pictures with her hands folded, Liv was sitting on the floor and we used her dinner table bench for her to rest her arms on.

And as I mentioned, the wavy hair has been created by using a blowdryer. Liv also had this idea in mind of the “Girl with the Pearl” painting. Inspired by that, Liv had a blue and gold scarf in her hair and a blue knitted vest over her shoulders. Here I had my flash aimed at the gold in the scarf so it would light up a bit. We also took a picture using the same pose and lighting as the painting as well. Liv also came up with the idea to hold a cup and she loved the results! The next day we took pictures of Micheal, and he did so well! It was new for him to do this but they turned out amazing! I just hope and aim to portrait Liv just as pure as possible. That is my only true goal.
When we were in Nagold last year, we took pictures of the band, and also from the lotus in Micheal’s hands. I took that one inside of the venue just before we went out to do the band pictures. We went to the castle of Nagold and I have never been there before. We had limited time and I had to put every member at a certain spot. That was a bit of a challenge but it worked out great.! We got so lucky with the weather since it was the end of November. (Even though rain would have looked cool on the pictures, we were very happy with the sun, since we had to walk all the way up there).

EM: Did you based the concept of your sessions in the new Liv songs or maybe Liv took some ideas for you? How is the way you work with Liv?
MR: I haven’t heard any music beforehand, some of it wasn’t ready yet. In this case, Liv had a view in mind, and the outfits, and we had our inspirational portrait. I have to make sure I have the right lighting, and then we’ll see what happens. I also had a few pictures on Pinterest as an inspiration but in the end, what you see is truely a result of our creative flow we had together. Liv likes to look at the pictures right after, we check them and look what works and what doesn’t. And we continue until we think we have enough.


EM: What do you think about ‘Amor Vincit Omnia?’ If you listened the album, what songs do you like the most?
MR: I really love the title track with Micheal! And Sapphire Heaven another favorite of mine! I think that this album is, once again, a very deep personal album straight from the heart. I think that it takes a lot of guts to sing like Liv sings “Ode to life Pristine”. Very fragile.

EM: Let me ask you how would the perfect photo session with Liv be in your opinion? What outfit and locations would you choose for Liv?
MR: Ooh that is a tough one. I think that it would be amazing to have a location as a lush green forest with fog OR a few rays of sunshine, or maybe on a black sand beach with rocks… or maybe underwater shots would be amazing! But I have no experience with that! Outfit wise, Liv always pics her outfits. If I were to choose, than whatever outfit feels comfortable for Liv. Maybe something with very flowy fabrics that gets picked up by the wind. Something ethereal. OR Something with a black, tight waisted blazer and pointy shoulders and chains, like “Corporate Goth” almost. Still dark but also classy. 



EM: Do you have future plans with Liv?
MR: Yes, we do! And that will be in Norway one day! 



EM: Maybe some Liv fans are not familiar with you. Could you please tell to our readers about your photograph passion and where can we find your works? Are you planning to work with some more bands?
MR: Thank you ;-) So, my name is Mariël Rohrbach, from the Netherlands. My first Leaves’ Eyes concert was in 2007 and there I took my little camera with me. I became an instant fan of Liv that day. Through the years I took more pictures at her concerts and also at other concerts where I was allowed to, and got my first DSLR camera. Afterwards, I have always send her the pictures. Little did I know that years later I got invited to take Liv’s portraits. I also photograph weddings now and then, and have my own little website: www.marielrohrbach.com . 


I recently got asked by my sister in law to take pictures of her soul band soon. I also photograph instagram pictures for a friend who has her own skin-treatment salon. I would love to take pictures of other bands as well, but I am not such a self-promotor :-)


EM: What do you like photograph the most when you are on a personal travel?
MR: Mostly details in nature and my surroundings, and most of all of my loved ones. Especially when they are not looking or knowing that I am there! Most of the time, when I return from travel, there are almost no pictures of myself :). I went to Vienna once and I took a picture in front of a building looking straight up (so you can see all the lines of that building). When I was done, there was an older lady looking really confused, not knowing what was so interesting. But that is the memory I have with that picture. It still makes me smile.

25 de noviembre… sí, noviembre. Liv lleva dos años sorprendiéndonos con el concierto anual de Nagold. En 2022 fue la primera vez que se hacía en sábado (hasta entonces siempre había sido en viernes); y en 2023, por primera vez, el concierto tiene lugar en noviembre y no en diciembre. Hasta ahora, Alte Seminarturnhalle siempre programaba su actuación como último evento antes de navidad.
¿El motivo? Diciembre siempre es un mes muy estresante para todos por la llegada de la navidad y por los trabajos de todos, recordemos que Liv trabaja de profesora de educación especial y para ella el viernes es un día laborable y además debe viajar de Suiza a Alemania. Había dudas de qué tal funcionaría el evento y cierto es que faltaron algunos ilustres fans y amigos de Liv como Anna Finke, Adam Brown, Chris Smiedi, Uli o Tina, pero el concierto fue un éxito absoluto.

Pero empecemos por el principio…
El 4 de octubre me escribió Märiel Rohrbach y me preguntó si iba a ir a Nagold este año. Siendo noviembre era complicado por cuestiones varias y tenía casi descartado asistir. Decidí mirar el precio de los vuelos por curiosidad y descubrí que, por 65 euros, ida y vuelta, podía viajar cuando el año anterior, en diciembre, pagué más de 150 euros. El precio del hotel, muy similar, 70 euros. El calentón fue en aumento y tras varias gestiones en casa y en el trabajo decidí volver a Nagold.
El siguiente paso era, como cada año, entrevistar a Liv para saber la última hora del concierto y dar a conocer toda su actualidad. Y mientras, Liv me mandó el setlist del concierto. Lo leí y lo estudié. Debo reconocer que me sorprendió. Es cierto que tiene nuevo disco en la calle, ‘River of diamonds’, y que tiene que promocionarlo; pero también es el 25 aniversario de ‘Aègis’. Quizá esperaba más presencia de éste. Tampoco había temas tradicionales como otros años, cuando cantaba “Pie Jesu” y “Ave María”. Desde el respeto y la confianza que tengo con ella le pregunté por ello y me dijo que tenía razón, a lo que añadió “te cantaré “Ave María”.
La entrevista tuvo repercusión entre sus fans, aunque si he de ser honesto nunca sé cuánta gente lee lo que escribo más allá de los likes en redes sociales y alguna estadística de Google Analytics.

Llegó el día de viajar a Nagold y en esta ocasión los horarios de mis vuelos fueron excelentes, tanto a la ida como a la vuelta. Madrugué, mucho, porque mi vuelo salía a las 06h30 pero eso me permitió hacer turismo durante unas horas por Stuttgart. Cierto que el Weinachtmarkt (mercado de navidad) aun no estaba abierto, de hecho, lo estaban montando todo, pero Königstrasse y sus calles adyacentes siempre resultan un paseo muy agradable y el lugar perfecto para comprar unos detalles a mi mujer y mis hijos. El año pasado descubrí la tienda de discos Second Hand y en esta ocasión decidí repetir experiencia allí, un lugar en el que puedes pasarte horas buceando entre vinilos y cd de todos los estilos; imposible salir con las manos vacías. El Centro Comercial Müller posee otra interesante sección musical, todo lo contrario que Saturn, un templo en el pasado que ha quedado relegado a un enclave totalmente prescindible.
Me fui para Nagold, sin prisa, disfrutando del viaje en transporte público y del paisaje.
Este año me alojé en Arthotel, un hotel pequeñito, escondido pero muy acogedor. Quedé muy contento con Adler el año anterior, pero Arthotel resultó la opción más económica para una sola persona. Sin duda, dos excelentes opciones y muy cerquita de Alte Seminarturnhalle.
Era pronto aun, aunque ya de noche, así que aproveché para descansar un poco en el hotel y cargar la batería de mi teléfono y sobre las 17h30 salí paseando hacia Alte Seminarturnhalle. No hacía mucho frío, unos 2 grados positivos, y aunque amenazaba nieve, finalmente no tuvimos la suerte del año anterior.

En el hall de la entrada de atrás me encontré con Liv, que justo salía por la puerta y tras un gran abrazo nos metimos para dentro. Saludé efusivamente a Michael, su marido, que estaba montando el stand del merch, y nos fuimos a su backstage, nos pusimos cómodos y charlamos y charlamos, nos pusimos al día y dejamos que nuestra complicidad y nuestra amistad hicieran el resto al abordar varias cuestiones muy personales. Liv sabe lo importante que esa charla fue para mí en el terreno personal y emocional. En estas llegaron Rocco y Angelo, de Milán, y entablamos una conversación interesante a la par que entretenida.
Poco antes que empezara el concierto tomamos asiento y decidimos que nuestra mesa fuera una especie de ONU con Sandra, Elvin y Pascal, venidos de Bélgica, por un lado, Rocco y Angelo llegados de Italia por otro, y yo desde España por otro. Nunca nos hubiéramos conocido de no ser por Liv.
El público iba entrando a la sala en un ambiente muy relajado, sin prisas, sin empujones y conscientes que íbamos a ver algo más que un concierto, una tradición. Pronto vi entrar a Märiel y Frans, su pareja, a Vera y Marco, y a Chantal y Joost y sus hijos. Somos esa familia que se junta cada año para navidad, bueno en esta ocasión un poquito antes.

Projekt Ju salieron a escena para presentar ‘Neuland’ y dieron un concierto muy armónico de un Gothic Rock muy elegante y personal en el que sobresale la voz de Jens-Christian Usner. El repertorio incluyó casi todos los temas de ‘Neuland’ como el que da título, “Folge der zahl” o “Mephista“ y además nos obsequiaron con una versión del clásico “She sells sanctuary” que The Cult publicaron en su segundo disco, ‘Love’, de 1985.

Un sonido nítido y cristalino es necesario para que su propuesta cobre el sentido que proponen en disco y en Nagold lo tuvieron. Lástima que algunos coros no puedan llevarlos al directo. Pese a ello Projekt Ju dieron un concierto muy serio y se presentaron como una banda con un gran futuro por delante. No les pierdas la pista porque van a dar qué hablar.

Y cuando creíamos que iba a aparecer Liv, Roland Bliesener, teclista de Liv, montó en el centro del escenario su teclado para ofrecernos un repertorio especial. Es la primera vez que Liv Kristine tiene dos teloneros y, ciertamente, me pareció una decisión muy apropiada, aunque yo hubiera cambiado el orden de las actuaciones por cuanto Projekt Ju tienen un estilo más cercano a Liv.

“Vogelfrei” o “Glückscent – Diebe” son dos de los temas con los que nos deleitó el bueno de Roland en un concierto muy agradable y disfrutable.

Y llegó el momento de Liv Kristine. El clima que se genera en Nagold es inigualable con todo el público sentado, con posibilidad de cenar antes del concierto y con ganas de disfrutar de un evento muy cercano, con una artista que no deja de sonreír e interactuar con el público que, a fin de cuentas, se ha convertido, con el tiempo, en fans y amigos al mismo tiempo. No es fácil conseguir esa simbiosis entre los dos elementos principales del negocio de la música, artista y público.

Tras la introducción de rigor, “Shaolin Me” fue la encargada de inaugurar el repertorio como ya hiciera en los dos conciertos previos. A decir verdad, el primer tramo de concierto siguió el mismo orden que en Reichenbach unos meses atrás. Y a tenor de lo visto, cabe destacar que funciona pues el concierto tiene ritmo, alternancia de tempos y permiten a Liv calentar la voz y entregarse a la causa aun sabiendo la exigencia vocal del tramo final.

Pero volvamos al concierto, porque el inicio tranquilo y pausado de la canción, dio paso a un estribillo muy melódico que cantamos todos. Y tras ella, uno de sus nuevos himnos, “Maligna” que ya presentó el año pasado y si entonces gustó, ahora lo ha hecho mucho más. Un tema hecho para el directo cuya letra es tan significativa para Liv y que arrancó las primeras palmas y puso a bailar a algunos asistentes que se encontraban de pie, en los laterales del escenario.

Fue mientras Liv interpretaba “Maligna” que yo andaba haciendo fotos de un lado a otro, cuando vislumbré a Víctor, un amigo chileno con el que tenemos amistad hace casi 10 años y no nos conocíamos en persona. Víctor se encontraba trabajando en Alemania los últimos meses y decidió venir a Nagold a ver a Liv, con quien ha dado clases de canto y donde por fin pudimos conocernos en un encuentro maravilloso. Nos conocimos virtualmente gracias a la música de Liv y, finalmente, nos hemos conocido en persona, gracias a un concierto de Liv. Otra de esas maravillosas historias que solo suceden en Nagold.

“Image” siempre supone un punto de inflexión en el concierto, arranca la sonrisa de los fans, Liv se viene arriba y los pulsos se aceleran y es que las canciones de ‘Musique’ siempre han tenido muy buena acogida en los conciertos de Liv en solitario.

Liv decidió recuperar hace ya unos años “3AM” para el repertorio y me parece muy acertado que la interprete tras “Image” para no abandonar del todo la electrónica y para que sirva de transición a temas de una cadencia más pausada. Cuando presentó el tema, aprovechó para recordarnos que en marzo reedita su disco debut, ‘Deus ex machina’, que contará con un montón de material extra y algún invitado de lujo. Los die hard fans siempre agradecemos que mire atrás en su repertorio musical.

Pronto llega un trio de baladas y medios tempos con “Have courage dear heart”, la siempre celebrada “Siren” y “Gravity”.
“Machine” volvió a agitarnos, a engorilarnos y, a muchos, levantarse de sus sillas con el que fue el último tema de Theatre of Tragedy de la noche.

“Our inmortal day” recuperaba la senda de ‘River of diamonds’, disco que iba a copar el protagonismo del tramo final del concierto. Su Gothic Metal contagioso, seguido de “Love decay” supieron a gloria con una banda cada vez más cohesionada y un Sascha Dannenberger convertido en el complemento perfecto de Liv en el escenario. Porque Liv mima a sus músicos, pero con Sascha tiene una química especial y con solo una mirada o un gesto se entienden y se complementan a la perfección.

Llegaba otro de los momentos álgidos del concierto con “In the heart of Juliet” un tema que siempre ha sido de los favoritos de sus fans. Y tras él, quizá el tema que más me sorprendió del concierto, “In your blue eyes”. Se trata de una gran canción, pero en disco no me había atrapado al nivel de otras composiciones y, sin embargo, en directo gana muchísima intensidad, tanto en el estribillo, pomposo y melódico, como por la seductora voz de Liv.
Y esta primera parte del concierto terminaba con el title track de su último disco, “River of diamonds” que sonó fenomenal.

Pero el público de Nagold quería más. Y todos sabíamos que habría más. Y el bis no defraudó, es más, me atrevería a decir que es el más emotivo y personal de cuantos ha tocado Liv en su carrera. Me explico.
En cada reportaje que escribo sobre Nagold, cada año, destaco que es un evento muy familiar, donde nos reunimos muchos amigos de Liv, que hemos creado unos lazos y unas amistades que hacen que este concierto sea tanto un evento personal como musical. Es en ese contexto en el que se enmarca este bis.

La vuelta al escenario de Liv y sus chicos tuvo como punto de partida “Gabriella’s song”, la banda sonora de la película ‘As It Is In Heaven‘ (en español ‘Como en el cielo’ y en alemán ‘Wie im himmel’) y que dedicó a Fred, un amigo suyo, y al que dio una carta desde el escenario. Os contextualizo la escena: cada año Fred y su esposa Chrissy acuden a Nagold a ver a Liv Kristine. Se trata de un matrimonio ya mayor (que no viejos) que, ataviados con ropas góticas, disfrutan del concierto, bailan, sonríen y destilan amor por los cuatro costados. No viene al caso explicar la intrahistoria de esta dedicatoria, pero sí diré que fue algo tan especial y emotivo que Liv, mientras cantaba, luchaba por contener sus lágrimas. Sin duda, el momento cumbre de la noche.

Llegó “Norwegian lovesong” que siempre es emotiva porque habla de su tierra madre y se convirtió en otro momento especial y delicado porque su amiga Tara Grey había venido desde New Jersey expresamente para cantar con ella esta noche y la interpretación fue absolutamente deliciosa. Tara canta las canciones de Liv en Estados Unidos y ha sido un sueño verlas juntas encima del escenario. Ojalá no sea la última vez.

Y cerró con “Ave Maria” que dedicó a Marc, un fan español, colaborador, amigo especial y con el que trabaja en tantos proyectos promocionales, de gestión de fan clubs y de medios de comunicación. Sí, me la dedicó a mí y yo no sabía dónde meterme; consiguió emocionarme y sonrojarme hasta hacerme llorar. Motivo emocional aparte, “Ave María” supo a gloria y Liv alcanzó un nivel superlativo a nivel vocal.
Y el concierto terminó tras más de hora y media, con el público queriendo más pero contento y satisfecho.

¿Y qué pasó entonces? Que después del concierto empieza el after party donde todos charlamos, reímos, bebemos, nos emocionamos y nos abrazamos, donde conocemos gente nueva y donde estamos con Liv hasta altas horas de la madrugada porque nadie nos dice que nos vayamos, porque los organizadores saben del clima tan especial que se genera en Alte Seminarturnhalle y porque Liv es una artista importante allí.

Se acercaron a saludarme Marvin Römisch, estudiante de noruego de Liv, y Andrea, amiga también de Liv, a los que no tenía el placer de conocer. Dos personas encantadoras.
Me permitiréis que me guarde los detalles del post concierto y que os recomiende venir el año que viene porque el concierto es maravilloso y las amistades también.
De vuelta al hotel tocaba reposar tantas emociones y asimilar tantos momentos.

Al día siguiente, tras unas pocas horas de descanso me encantó pasear por el río Nagold y sus alrededores, relajado, sin prisa, gustándome y paseando cerca de la gente del pueblo que salía a la calle de buena mañana.
De vuelta al aeropuerto, conocí al conductor del autobús. Quiso el destino que no llevara monedas para pagar el billete y él no aceptara tarjeta. Al espetar un “mierda” en español, el chófer me preguntó de donde era en mi idioma. “De España, vengo de Barcelona” a lo que él me contestó “¿de qué parte de Barcelona?” “De El Prat” respondí yo; “yo soy de Vilanova”. Para los que no conozcan la zona, entre ambas poblaciones apenas hay 40 kilómetros. Compartimos un viaje en autobús maravilloso y conocí la historia de una familia que tuvo que trasladarse por motivos laborales. Era el final perfecto a un viaje inolvidable.

Cada año que vuelvo a Nagold pienso que no se puede superar el viaje anterior y siempre me equivoco así que estoy deseando poder volver en 2024 y volver a contaros mis aventuras y peripecias.
Por cierto, ahora que no nos lee nadie, sino hay cambios de última hora, Liv actuará en Alte Seminarturnhalle el 23 de noviembre de 2024.

Liv Kristine returns to Nagold, her fetish scene, her meeting place with her fans and friends from all over the world. For this edition, people come from the United States and Chile, as well as from all over Europe. As we usually do at The Rarest Flower, we interviewed Liv just before the event to find out about the preparations and the last minute, but also to tell us what the next few musical months have in store for us.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): My dear friend Liv, how are you? How’s life going?
LIV KRISTINE (LK): Dear Marc, thank you so much for doing this interview with me. I can’t wait to meet you again – in just one week! I hope all is well at home. My family is doing really well. Everybody is healthy and that’s the main thing. Our families from the North were here this summer. Carmen and her family stayed here during the summer. I was so happy to spend a lot of time with my dear godchildren – we went swimming, travelled by ship across Lake Lucerne or did trips up into the Swiss Alps. It’s all very close to our home. I still love and am very dedicated to my work as a teacher for children with special needs. It’s my way of serving the world. In general we need to show more empathy and respect for each other to really make this world a better place. The children is our future and the most valuable gift on this planet. It’s in our responsibility to communicate this frequency. When I see children dying due to wars, political conflicts and destruction of Nature – everything created by grown-ups – it makes me want to cry desperately. It is really hard for me to watch the news right now. I work, among others, with traumatised children. My working day starts with giving hugs. These moments are so valuable, so powerful and healing.

EM: What new things will Nagold’s concert bring this year?
LK: The setlist will contain more tracks from my latest album „River of Diamonds“. Since you are my very special friend and long-time ultimate support I already sent it to you. You asked for „Ave Maria“, which was not included on the setlist for Nagold this year…was. I will sing it for you since you wished for it, of course.

EM: 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of 'Aègis'. Taking into account Nagold is always a unique event for you and your fans and friends, do you plan to sing something special or some new song from that album?
LK: I will perform at least one track from this masterpiece. I promise.

EM: Are you planning to sing “Pictured Within” live with your husband?
LK: Good question. Mikkel and I already talked about it. It might be a good idea for the future. This is the plan: One of our friends invited us to his 50th birthday this year. We will check out how it feels for Mikkel to actually sing live, on a stage. If it goes well we might take this step in the future.

EM: Could there be an option that Rocco Cogliati / Ecor performs “True Colours” live with you and be your support artist at Nagold?
LK: Rocco is actually going to be travelling to Nagold. It would be a brilliant idea having him on stage. You are so right. We already have a support act for this year, but I think it would be a good plan for the next Nagold Special show. Rocco is such an outstanding talent. I love the vibes he brings into his music.

EM: Unfortunately some of your fans and friends will not be able to come to Nagold this year. Do you want to say something to Adam Brown, Chris Smiedi, Anna Finke and Uli, among so many others?
LK: We will surely miss them! We will miss you guys. I am so grateful for all your endless support throughout all these years. Without you there would be no Nagold… and no ‘River of Diamonds’. This year my dear friend Tara will travel all the way from the US. Moreover, she will join me on stage.

EM: You have recently signed a contract with the management agency Dragon Productions to organize your tours and concerts. Could you give me some exclusive information about your concerts for 2024?
LK: I can let you know for now that we will play at Wacken 2024 with a very special folk-setlist which includes tracks from my whole career.

EM: You know fairly well that you have a Good bunch of fans in Latin America and that they constantly ask me when you are thinking to go to Chile, Brazil or Mexico; so, could we cheer them up by announcing some plan to present 'River of Diamonds' around there?
LK: I am still hoping and praying for a little tour to happen, at least 10 days through Latin-America. My band is really eager to fulfil this dream. I have such fantastic memories from our Latin-American shows.

EM: What is your next step forward in study? I know you’re working on two special releases; can you tell me something about these reissues?
LK: ‘Deus ex Machina’, my very first solo-album, which was released in 1998, will be re-issued in March 2024. I have a really special guest from Norway on board who re-composed and re-recorded one track of his choice, just for the re-release. You will love that one. It turned out absolutely amazing.

EM: It’s been a few months since you published 'River of diamonds', what do you think of the work that Metalville is doing to promote it?
LK: I am very happy for all their work effort and support. A sub label of Metalville, Flying Dolphin Entertainment, will also promote „Deus ex Machina“ for this reason.

EM: From the last four or five years your career seems to have taken off again with continued releases and steps forward in terms of record companies, management, booking… it seems that Liv Kristine’s name is more and more present in the media and in record stores; how do you feel about? Do you think your career needed a boost?
LK: Yes, a clear yes. I was so unhappy about what happened with Leaves’ Eyes, no need to discuss that. I really had to take care of my family, to recover and heal. Tommy Olsson was so patient with me. He kept sending me those incredible instrumental compositions and as soon as my daily life had settled and my work situation had calmed down a bit I started diving into this magic bubble of Tommy’s tunes. In 2016, 2017 and 2018 there were moments when I doubted the whole music business. I had just lost all my trust. However, Tommy, all the bands who asked for a cooperation, my fans, you, my sister held up that mirror telling me that music and singing is part of Liv Kristine’s authentic self. I realised it’s a way for me to heal, to be creative within this lifetime, to show my listeners that it’s only in the darkness that you see the light – and if you embrace this frequency, there’s a whole river of diamonds surrounding you.

EM: Querida amiga Liv ¿Cómo estás? ¿Qué tal va la vida?
LK: Querido Marc, muchas gracias por esta entrevista. ¡Estoy impaciente por verte de nuevo, en solo una semana! Espero que en casa todo vaya bien. En mi familia todo va genial, todo el mundo está sano y eso es lo más importante. Nuestras familias del norte han venido a visitarnos este verano. Carmen y su familia estuvieron aquí este verano y estuve contentísima de poder pasar tiempo con mis ahijados con los que fuimos a nadar, viajamos en barco por el lago Lucerna e hicimos excursiones por los Alpes suizos. Todo está muy cerca de casa.
Sigo amando y dedicándome a mi trabajo como profesora de niños con necesidades especiales. Es mi forma de servir al mundo. En general necesitamos mostrar más empatía y respeto por los demás para hacer del mundo un lugar mejor. Los niños son nuestro futuro y el regalo más valioso de este planeta. Está en nuestra responsabilidad comunicar esta frecuencia. Cuando veo niños morir en guerras, conflictos políticos y destrucción de la naturaleza (todo creado por los adultos), me dan ganas de llorar desesperadamente.
Ahora mismo me resulta muy difícil ver las noticias. Trabajo, entre otras cosas, con gente traumatizada. Mi jornada laboral empieza dando abrazos y esos momentos son muy valiosos, muy poderosos y curativos.

EM: ¿Qué novedades traerá el concierto de Nagold este año?
LK: El repertorio contendrá más canciones de mi último disco ‘River of Diamonds‘. Como eres un amigo muy especial y mi máximo apoyo desde hace mucho tiempo, te lo he enviado. Me pediste “Ave María”, que no estaba en el repertorio de este año. Ya que la has pedido, te la cantaré, por supuesto.

EM: 2023 marca el 25 aniversario de ‘Aègis’. Teniendo en cuenta Nagold es siempre un evento único para ti y tus fans y amigos ¿tienes previsto cantar algo especial o alguna nueva canción de ese disco?
LK: Como mínimo cantaré una canción de ese disco, te lo prometo.

EM: ¿Cantarás “Pictured within” en directo con tu marido?
LK: Buena pregunta. Mikkel y yo hemos hablado de ello y sería una gran idea para el futuro. El plan es el siguiente: uno de nuestros amigos nos ha invitado su fiesta de 50 cumpleaños este año. Vamos a ver qué le parece a Mikkel cantar en directo en un escenario Si sale bien, puede que demos ese paso en el futuro.

EM: ¿Es una opción que Rocco Cogliati / Ecor interprete contigo “True colours” en directo y sea tu telonero en Nagold?
LK: De hecho, Rocco va a viajar a Nagold y sería una idea brillante tenerlo en el escenario, tienes razón. Para este año ya tenemos un telonero, pero creo que sería un plan genial para el próximo concierto especial en Nagold. Rocco tiene un talento excepcional, me encantan las vibraciones que transmite con su música.

EM: Desgraciadamente algunos de tus fans y amigos no van a poder venir a Nagold este año ¿Quieres decir algo a Adam Brown, Chris Smiedi, Anna Finke y Uli entre otros?
LK: ¡Los vamos a echar de menos! Os echaremos de menos, chicos. Os estoy muy agradecida por todo vuestro infinito apoyo todos estos años, sin vosotros no habría Nagold ni ‘River of diamonds’. Este año mi querida amiga Tara viajará desde Estados Unidos y estará conmigo en el escenario.

EM: Recientemente has firmado contrato con la agencia de management Dragon Productions para organizar tus giras y conciertos ¿puedes adelantarme en exclusiva alguna información de tus conciertos para 2024?
LK: Puedo adelantarte que estaré tocando en Wacken 2024 con un set list Folk muy especial que incluirá canciones de toda mi carrera.

EM: Sabes que tienes muchos fans en América Latina y continuamente me preguntan cuando vas a ir a Chile, Brasil o México ¿planeas presentar allí ‘River of diamonds’?
LK: Sigo esperando y rezando para hacer una pequeña gira de al menos diez días por América Latina. Mi banda tiene muchas ganas de cumplir este sueño. Tengo recuerdos fantásticos de nuestros conciertos por América Latina.

EM: ¿Cuál es tu próximo paso adelante en estudio? Sé que estás trabajando en dos lanzamientos especiales ¿puedes contarme algo de esas reediciones?
LK: ‘Deus ex Machina’, mi primer disco en solitario que fue publicado en 1998 será reeditado en marzo de 2024. Tengo un invitado noruego muy especial conmigo que ha vuelto a componer y regrabar una canción que él mismo ha elegido especialmente para esta reedición. Te va a encantar porque ha quedado absolutamente increíble.

EM: Han pasado ya algunos meses desde que publicaste ‘River of diamonds’ ¿qué opinas del trabajo que Metalville está hacienda para promocionarlo?
LK: Estoy muy contenta por todo su esfuerzo y apoyo y por ello, un subsello de Metalville, Flying Dolphin Entertainment, promocionará ‘Deus ex Machina’.

EM: En los cuatro o cinco últimos años tu Carrera parece haber despegado de nuevo con lanzamientos continuados y pasos Adelante en términos de compañías de discos, management, booking… parece que el nombre de Liv Kristine está cada vez más y más presente en ellos medios de comunicación y en las tiendas de discos ¿Cómo te sientes? ¿Crees que tu carrera necesitaba un empujón?
LK: Sí, un claro sí. Me sentí muy mal por lo que pasó con Leaves’ Eyes, no hace falta hablar de eso. Realmente tenía que cuidar de mi familia, recuperarme y sanar. Tommy Olson fue muy paciente conmigo, siguió enviándome esas increíbles composiciones instrumentales y tan pronto como mi vida diaria se asentó y mi situación laboral se calmó un poco empecé a sumergirme en esa burbuja mágica de las melodías de Tommy. En 2016, 2017 y 2018 hubo momentos en los que dudé de todo en el negocio de la música. Acababa de perder toda mi confianza. Sin embargo, Tommy, todas las bandas que me preguntaron si quería colaborar con ellos, mis fans, tú y mi hermana sostuvisteis ese espejo que me decía que la música y el canto forman parte del auténtico yo de Liv Kristine. Me di cuenta que era una forma de curarme, de ser creativa en esta vida, de mostrar a mis oyentes que solo en la oscuridad se ve la luz y que si abrazas esta frecuencia te rodea todo un río de diamantes (clara alusión al título de su último disco, ndr.).

Liv Kristine has come back in order to stay and to drive us again into her religion. And in between all her creative activities, the moment to re-edit “Enter my religion“ has finally come, a key disc in her career for various reasons that we are going to talk about in the course of the interview. But in this reaffirmation of her career, Liv has sat down to work on new songs, plan concerts beside Nagold, and in her own way, upholds her traditional Christmas concert where she is going to meet all her fans.
I got in touch with Liv to talk about more in detail about ‘Enter my religion’, to give an introduction to this year’s concert in Nagold and in order for her to reveal one of the surprises planned for the concert and – as usual – to talk about the present and the future.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): How has Liv Kristine changed from 2006 to 2023?
LIV KRISTINE (LK): My life has changed immensely in the period between 2021 and now. 2006 to 2021 is one separate era which has come to its natural closure. Ten albums later, my sixth and most authentic solo album in the mix, my son is two meters tall and a lovely young man mastering his own life (who also saved and brought two dogs into our family), I moved home four times and country twice, I met and married the love of my life sharing a home which is built on unconditional love, respect, gratitude and deep compassion. My supporting musical community is stronger than ever and I have found a fine balance between my work as a teacher for children with special needs, and my creativity in music, painting and as a vocal coach. This is luck for me. It feels like coming home, like I am feeling safer and calmer now. The path began, interestingly enough, with ‘Enter My Religion’ in 2006, but now in 2022 this awareness is even more intense. On my path I have become more conscious about who I am and what I am doing here on this planet in this one given lifetime. It feels like there is an awareness shift towards experiencing BEING, more than DOING. All this craving and doing means being occupied with stuff that we have to deal with in the outside crazy world. It’s crazy how we forget to live. Our minds turn into never-resting monkey-minds that take over and rules our existence, even our sleep when we’re supposed to rest. My life has been utterly busy and yes, I like being an active person, moreover, I treasure the experience I’ve gathered because it’s all part of my life and it has lead me to here and now, but sometimes we are so busy that we forget that we are human beings, so instead we are „human doings“ on a hamster-wheel. Now, being half-way on my life path, I have come to a new era in my life that demands more awareness going inwards, anchoring in my soul, also asking „what is authenticity?“. My mind has become more quiet and I need this silence. I have come to understand that there is a „thing, a state“ between birth and death that we call LIFE. It belongs only to you and it is unique, however, it is your perspective on any situation, experience or mood that changes the matter. The essence of life is how you live it and what you do with your experience. If I want to I can see beauty even when something is broken, I can see sunshine when it rains. This perspective gives me so much freedom to choose what is essential for me to really live a life in compassion, authenticity, love, gratitude and deep awareness. Maybe this is what our great, compassionate thinkers call “enlightenment”, many pointing to the practical way of living found in Buddhism.

EM: Why did you decide to re-release ‘Enter my religion’ right now? Could it be because your contract with Roadrunner has finally released the legal rights to di so?
LK: Yes. In 2019 when I decided to release my music by myself („Have Courage Dear Heart“) and with the support of my husband, Michael, and his independent label Allegro Talent Music, we soon came up with the idea of re-releasing «Enter My Religion». We decided to give both production and artwork a real face-lift. The files were all still there, sound and visuals. However, we decided to include unreleased tracks. Andy Classen (One Stage Studio) gave the songs the finishing touch. We also decided to redesign the artwork. The photos are actually from a photo session made in 2005 which had never been used. Kai R. Joachim had saved them and was happy with me that these good photos can be shown. Marc from Artwars completely redesigned the cover artwork and the booklet. We will certainly re-release every solo album – each one with a better sound and special editions. We promise you there will be more re-releases.

EM: If I have to be honest I was very very very surprised when Roadrunner released ‘Enter my religion’ since Roadrunner is pure Metal but then your solo career was including Rock, Metal, Pop and acoustic elements. How did you get this contract and how did you make Roadrunner pay attention in your music?
LK: It’s a very good question. If you take a look at my solo albums: ‘Deus Ex Machina’ (1998) – ‘Enter My Religion’ (2006) – ‘Skintight’ (2010) – ‘Libertine’ (2012) and ‘Vervain’ (2014), you see that all albums were released on metal-oriented labels. I guess it happened this way as I come from metal and sold a lot of albums with my first band – gothic metal pioneers Theatre of Tragedy.

EM: What was your contribution with Cradle of Filth for “Nymphetamine” (song, video and album) like? Was this contribution related in any way to your contract with Roadrunner?
LK: You are absolutely right. Dani also got in touch with me directly and explained what he had in mind – „the sweet honey voice“. It was a perfect match and I have to say that it is one of the best collaborations I have experienced so far. The video was shot in London’s dungeons, a very dark and humid place. I had a really good time with the band and the crew, a really good weekend.

EM: The second contribution of the album that needs to be remarked was Peter Tägtgren who wrote the music for “Over the moon” and “Trapped in your labyrinth”. How did Peter’s collaboration come to be?
LK: I really like Peter’s diverse style in his compositions and I was searching for a couple of up-tempo rock-metal songs.

EM: Why did you choose to develop your sound from ‘Deus ex machina’? I think in some ways ‘Enter my religion’ contains traces of your solo past but in some other ways can also be seen as a new beginning. If yes, could you please tell us more about this new beginning?
LK: After the success with Theater of Tragedy and the release of ‘Deus ex Machina’, my first solo album, I felt the knife of the hard side of the music business. I had to go to court to settle my artistic freedom and I didn’t even understand why I was being forced to do it in the first place, because I just wanted to release good music, be authentic, sing, give the world some aesthetics. I didn’t know whom to trust anymore and was very disappointed. When all the chaos finally came to an end, my son was born shortly afterwards. Then I didn’t care about what had happened anyway. I felt that my path was the right one, with everything that life entails, and I felt at home again, with myself and especially with raising my son and being a mother. ‘Enter My Religion’ has a lot of light as well as some darkness to it, which reflects my life experience: Life can be broken; life can be beautiful.

EM: Roadrunner, Peter Tägtgren, a new sound in your solo career… I think ‘Enter my religion’ was a kind of “now or never”. Do you agree with me?
LK: You are so right. It’s about creative freedom and coming home. This album is spicy, quite daring in both sound and concept. Spicy pop-rock with folk influence, perhaps? I recently found the CD under the section “independent” at the Media Markt, by the way. That fits. I invited musicians from different backgrounds and cultures to add their passion and musical knowing to the compositions. Vocally there’s a bit of Tori Amos influence in there. I love her lyrics, by the way, they are damn honest. I love the contrast of her sweet voice and the honest and often brutal stories she’s telling. A brilliant artist. I just went with the creative process and took in all inspiration that was around. Based on my experience with music business as mentioned about, I focused on my artistic freedom.

EM: The cover photo of this this re-issue is the same one as the original one. Why did you want to use a similar image and concept? At the same time your new image shows a more balanced and mature and woman in all ways. Do you agree with me?
LK: Absolutely. As mentioned above, the photos were not used for the cover artwork back then, but were saved after a photo session done in 2005. Kai R. Joachim, the outstanding photographer of these photos, told me he still had them and was happy that these great photos can be shown in connection with the re-release. Marc from Artwars completely redesigned the cover artwork and the booklet so that it reflects and combines “now and then” perfectly.

EM: Now, with the perspective of time, which songs are your personal highlights of ‘Enter my religion’?
LK: It’s hard to say but I believe you can find the answer in my lyrics. That was back in 2006. My life had changed a lot. To sum it up – my lyrics „happened“, as mentioned above, after a period of great disappointment, but sensing that the personal path was meant to be as one going inwards also in 2006, learning to lean into the seat of the soul, observing the mind, not getting lost in the monkey-mind and all the nagging stories created by unconscious people. I found and find eternal bliss in motherhood, moreover, in my deep, compassionate marriage with Michael. The lyrics on this release are more honest, dealing with both struggles and bliss. So you can tell from the titles like «Coming Home», «My Revelation», «Enter My Religion», «You are the Night» and «Woman in Me» that I had the feeling of „arriving“. «Over the Moon» is a song about happiness (especially being a mom), while «Fake a Smile», «Blue Emptiness», «For a Moment» and «Trapped in Your Labyrinth» are food for thought. The album meant and still means freedom to me, and that’s a personal highlight in itself.

EM: If you now think about the release of ‘Enter my religion’ back in 2006, what would you have done differently in terms of composition, promotion, concerts…?
LK: Only one thing: I would have used the pictures Kai took back then as they are more authentic, however, I am so glad they were „resting“ safe on Kai’s computer. I guess it was meant to happen this way.

EM: What can you remember about the shows you played to promote ‘Enter my religion’ back in 2006? You played two shows with Apoptygma Berzerk and at Wave Gotik Treffen, the biggest Goth festival in the world…
LK: Good times, really good times. Most shows were of a bigger scale with bigger locations and audiences. One gig, though, was in Wuppertal in Germany, which should have been cancelled as the club was about to close. Anyway, we didn’t know and drove there. There still were 18 people waiting to get in what so ever, so we decided to play for less than a third of the agreed fee. There was one lady in the audience with incredibly beautiful eyes and aura, who didn’t move a centimeter from where she was standing during the whole show. Today Anna is my best friend and I am the godmother of her son. You can’t imagine how glad I am that we played that cancelled show.

EM: Do you think that ‘Enter my religion’ had the success it deserved or maybe did you expect something more or different?
LK: This album was promoted for only a short period of time. Then there were structural changes within the company Roadrunner which meant the end of our cooperation, sadly. I was happy with Roadrunner, but due to the situation the album kind of just disappeared and lost all attention.

EM: I want to ask you about your next album because I know you are working on new songs. What can we expect? Who is writing the new music? When can we hear the new music? Is there any chance to play a premiere in Nagold as you did for ‘Libertine’?
LK: My sixth solo album, composed by the legendary Tommy Olsson (‘Aegis’, Theatre of Tragedy 1998) is in the mix and soon ready to be released. And yes, I will play two of my new tracks in Nagold this year (17.12.2022).

EM: Is there any chance that Rocco Cogliati or Anette Gulbrandsen will be on stage with you in Nagold?
LK: It is not planned for this year’s show.

EM: Your annual show in Nagold has always been on a Friday. Is there any special reason to do it on Saturday?
LK: It’s due to practical reasons. I have to work on Friday and since we are living in Switzerland we have a ride of 300 kilometers.

EM: I can’t close this interview if I don’t ask you about Theatre of Tragedy… Any news? Any step forward to a reunion or something similar? Any new upcoming re-release?
LK: I will be home for Christmas and hopefully be able to meet some of the guys downtown Stavanger for a few beers. Lorentz is currently living in the US, Ray on the other side of Norway, I’m settled in Lucerne, all of us having families and 7 – 4 jobs. Maybe not now, but I hope some day, at least getting together for a couple of festivals.

Liv Kristine is rolling the wheel of fortune, with determination, conviction, and dedication.
Liv Kristine remains in the news, and she does it with a new solo work, on this occasion. This solo work will be a record combining both, studio recorded songs and live performed anthems of her career, which will be much celebrated by her fans.
‘Have courage dear heart’ is a title as meaningful as identifying for Liv. We used it as a starting point for a pleasant and entertaining chat, event sentimental at some point… As she has us used to. In this conversation she advances us some interesting things…

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): 22021 is your busiest year in a very long time, from the musical workload standpoint. How do you feel about it?
LIV KRISTINE (LK): Thankyou, my dear friend, for connecting again so soon. I am filled with such gratitude. This release is something I have dreamt of for so long.
I thank my fans, friends and followers for being so patient. It was Michael who encouraged me to return to my artistic roots, to return to what my heart is so passionate about – music.

EM: It seems to me like this is the very first time your composer pays attention to your real needs. In the sense that, for the very first time, your composer listens to your true voice. Would you agree with me in that statement?
LK: You already found the right words. Yes, that is the frequency around the compositions. It is about having the courage to speak out one’s real truths and values, it’s about being authentic, about sensing the greatness of the universe. Tommy started composing these songs in 2015 and he has given me all the time in the world to progress on them. And my voice has grown so much since then.

EM: I could perceive an unmistakably homogeneous sound through your last four studio recorded songs. Are we aligned on that sense? Did you feel completely free to record, suggest and change the songs?
LK: Yes. I thank you. I thank Tommy (Black Rider Record Studi), Eroc (Eroc’s Mastering Ranch) and Andy (Stage One Studio) for that. There was no communication over the mixes; they just happened like a mutual understanding, a common goal between Norway, Switzerland and Germany.

EM:What can you tell us about your professional relationship with Tommy Olson, from the angle of personal and musical compatibility? What happened between you when he left Theatre of Tragedy? And how did you get in touch again?
LK: We totally lost contact after Tommy left the band. I still don’t know why this happened. Then also I had to leave the band. I didn’t even know myself why I had to leave the band. However, as facts came to surface during one of our reuniting meetings in Stavanger, I know today what wasn’t clear to me in 2003, and we dissolved all misunderstandings over a few beers. But that’s another story and I totally understand why and how it happened now. Well, it was Raymond who contacted Tommy during our tour “Liv Kristine” in 2015. I was so happy to hear from him. I visited him in Norway some time later and I just knew we can create something really beautiful together.

EM: ‘Have Courage Dear Heart’ is one of the best album titles ever! Few times the title of an album has expressed much more than this one.
LK: You are so right. I nearly quit singing back in 2016, 2017, when I felt some kind of deep insecurity and a lot of fears. First of all needed I to build up my own and my family’s life again. When Michael “Mikkel” came into my life, he opened up my heart, for love and for having the courage to be who I am, so I could keep walking into the light which has always been my way, to sing with all of my heart, to feel safe again and to show my true colours. All songs are like prayers. This release is a manifestation of my inner voice coming out strong and clear again. “Have Courage Dear Heart” is a message to the universe. I feel privileged sharing my experience and wisdom with other people finding themselves on their personal path to manifest their authenticity. This so often begins with strengthening your inner voice. Karmasonic (www.karmasonic.net) really opened up a new chapter and door in my life.

EM: In my opinion ‘Skylight (Cathedral version)’ would be the new ‘The Rarest Flower’. It tastes the same spirit, the same sound, and it is very deep and emotional, as well. How did this version born?
LK: Patrick, who recorded this version, had an idea of playing „Skylight“ live in a piano version. It happened there and then.

EM: Personally speaking, I adore live songs. As we both know, I’ve been asking your tirelessly to record the Nagold shows since forever, as they are always special. So, thank you so much for publishing some live songs finally!!! What was the process you followed to choose the songs?
LK: Chris, our long-time engineer of the legendary Seminarturnhalle in Nagold, Germany, where I’ve been playing my annual show for years, sent me the recordings from 2019 and I just chose with a critical ear. I am very sensitive when it comes to live recordings. It wasn’t easy to choose.

EM: Could you tell our readers the story behind ‘Serenity’? Do you remember any story in relation to the concept of this song?
LK: „Serenity“ had existed in Tommy’s repertoire for a while before I recorded it at this studio during summer 2019. I heard it and loved it. It has such a cool vibe to it and it inspired me to use my voice in a quite different manner than what you normally have heard from me. A really cool experience.

EM: Could you tell us something about the musicians accompanying you in the new songs?
LK: All instruments were recorded by Tommy himself, except for „Skylight Cathedral“ which was recorded by Patrick Winter.

EM: Andy Classen mastered and mixed these live songs at his own Stage One Studio. He is a well-recognized producer. How was your ideas sharing and communication with Andy?
LK: Yes, Andy also recorded my vocals for „Gravity“ and „Have Courage Dear Heart“. Andy and Michael have been close friends for years. We were looking for a studio and Andy was right in the middle of our drive to the north of Germany. I love his place – it’s like litte Asia. It’s very comfortable and quiet and that’s important for me. Working with Andy was like we’d known each other for a long time – so easy, so relaxed and productive.

EM: We have noticed that ‘Skylight’ and ‘Have Courage Dear Heart’ are two EPs (extended plays). We are eager to have a long play of yours in our hands. Do you have a timeline to release a new LP album? What would be the plan?
LK: My full-length album is done 2/3. I couldn’t visit my composer Tommy Olsson in Norway last year and this year due to the situation we are currently in so the circumstances slowed down the whole production. However, we have a good plan. First the EP, then the album, maybe a second single in-between. We have some really fine and interesting guest coming up.

I can tell you exclusively that December 17, 2021 will be my annual Christmas concert in Nagold

EM: There is a concert scheduled for May 15th at Die Halle in Reichenbach. Did you receive a solid confirmation of this concert? Is it really happening? If so, what kind of show can we expect? I read on the Internet information about the show, but not in the official channels.
LK: My next gig is planned for August, every else planned before had to be postponed. Stella Nomen Festival is our first one that is planned for August in Torgau with a special setlist from my early solo albums.

EM: Finally, your show in Nagold’20 was cancelled. What did you feel when you received the news? I think the crew is trying to reschedule cancelled shows. Is there any chance for us to see you twice in Nagold in 2021? For instance, December and new date, in substitution for the one cancelled.
LK: Yes, I have a good feeling about our annual show in December. I really hope to see you, all of you there. It’s such a special event. I am in close contact with the crew and there will be news soon, although I can tell you exclusively that December 17, 2021 will be my annual Christmas concert in Nagold.

EM: We received news that you will be singing at Stella Nomine Festival on August 21st. Is the festival still programmed?
LK: As already mentioned above, yes, we have confirmed and we really hope the festival can take place.

EM: About the Stella Nomine Festival… there will be some musicians you performed with and some bands you know as Das Ich, Johan Hedlund from Tiamat… Will there be any room for guest appearances or collaborations?
LK: So far no. We haven’t met for years. I am looking forward to seeing them again, Bruno Kramp and Johan Edlund.

EM: 2021 marks the 25th anniversary since ‘Velvet darkness they fear’ was released. What memories do you keep from those days?
LK: I really love thinking back on the lightness and freedom around our compositions. We gathered in our free-time and created something special. There was no big pressure, no big money nor people controlling our work, visions and plans. It was such a great and liberating feeling. Very authentic, highly creative. Your question is really nice because this is the frequency for my artistic work now. It just feels like being one, at home and in total alignment with what I am creating. I have wonderful people around me who inspire me, moreover, the best fans in the world who are both really patient and open-minded towards ma releases.

EM: Do you have any plans with Theatre of Tragedy? Maybe a new rehearsal? Is there still not a chance to reunion?
LK: I wish I could answer this question. We haven’t met since 2019 for beers, laughs, long talks and rehearsal. However, Lorenz, Hein and I are in steady contact.

‘HAVE COURAGE DEAR HEART’

Un nuevo trabajo de Liv siempre es un acontecimiento, sea el formato que sea, máxime en estos tiempos en los que no se prodiga demasiado en cuanto a lanzamientos discográficos.
‘Have courage dear heart’ es un acontecimiento en sí mismo por varios motivos.
El primero es que, por primera vez, Liv va a publicar un trabajo suyo en solitario en vinilo y lo va a hacer en ¡¡¡tres colores distintos!!! Rojo, púrpura y transparente, además de una edición en digipack. No es un hecho menor la edición en vinilo y más con una foto tan delicada como la escogida para la portada.
El segundo, que Allegro Talent Music sea su discográfica, y esté dirigida por su prometido, hace que la edición sea mucho más cuidada. La fotografía, el diseño, el artwork, la grabación… todo está hecho con mimo y sumo cuidado
El tercero es que por fin Liv publica material en directo. Llevaba mucho tiempo sugiriéndole que publicara algún concierto en Nagold porque es un material muy preciado para sus fans, especialmente para los que asistimos a estos conciertos especiales. “Panic”, “Siren”, “Skylight”, “Gravity” y “Ave Maria” son los temas escogidos y como ya dije en la crónica de ese concierto, algunos de esos temas fueron los momentos álgidos del evento (http://empirezone.es/2020/02/03/liv-kristine-nagold-2019/).

Dos años después de publicar el EP ‘Skylight’ aparece ‘Have courage dear heart’. Pocas veces me ha emocionado tanto el título de un disco, ya sea por lo que lleva implícito como por lo que el oyente puede sentir haciéndoselo suyo. ‘Have courage dear heart’ debería ser un lema de vida.
La primera duda que me genera este disco es el formato. Liv y Allegro Talent Music se empeñan en definirlo como EP pero por número de canciones y duración, no es así. Se puede considerar un EP por cuanto solo hay dos piezas nuevas: “Serenity” y “Have courage dear heart”.

Musicalmente creo que Liv Kristine está publicando canciones muy homogéneas, que Tommy Olson, su compositor, la entiende y la conoce a la perfección y está haciendo canciones perfectas para ella. Tommy ha entendido mejor que nadie que potenciar la voz de Liv, su mensaje y, sobretodo, la sonoridad de su voz es la esencia de sus trabajos en solitario. Hasta ahora, pocos momentos en la carrera de Liv han reflejado este hecho como ha sucedido con los último cuatro temas de estudio que ha grabado.

Las canciones nuevas que se incluyen en esta edición son:

“Serenity” es la canción más animada del EP. Una canción alegre y bailable sin ser pop. Esta canción es una vieja demo que tenían grabada y a la que han dado una vuelta de tuerca para publicarla con una letra que refleja ese modo de “patear culos los sábados por la mañana”. Con “Paris Paris” y “Vanilla Skin Delight” formaría un buen trío en directo.

“Have courage dear heart” originalmente existió como una melodía de mandolina que Tommy Olson envió solo por diversión a Liv a principios del verano de 2019. Después de grabar Liv su voz, la canción comenzó a crecer y brillar. Querían mantener ese aura de Morricone y, de alguna manera, el sonido perfecto se manifestó como en la pantalla de cine en una película imaginaria del oeste.

“Skylight (cathedral version)” es una pieza absolutamente deliciosa que me provocó un estado de catarsis absoluta cuando la interpretó en Nagold’19. Al escucharla, vas a encontrar una reminiscencia absoluta a “The rarest flower”. Imposible no emocionarse. Teclado, voz y sentimiento puro porque Liv canta con el corazón en la mano.

Acompañando a estas tres canciones volvemos a encontrar “Skylight” y “Gravity” que tienen un plus a aparecer por vez primera en vinilo. Liv ha grabado las voces en el Stage One Studio y ha contado con un ingeniero de primer nivel como Andy Classen, excepto la cathedral version de “Skylight” que fue grabada por Patrick Winter.
A nivel fotográfico, Stephan Lindner se ha encargado de las fotos de estudio y Marc Gutiérrez de las de directo.

Pero, como decía antes, uno de los grandes atractivos de este lanzamiento es que por primera vez podemos disfrutar a Liv Kristine en solitario en directo y eso no es un hecho baladí.
“Panic”, “Siren” y, especialmente, el “Ave Maria” de Schubert que canta siempre a petición de los fans, y ya como tradición junto a “Pie Jesu”, consiguen retrotraerme a aquella mágica noche del 18 de diciembre de 2019 en el Alte Seminarturnhalle donde pude disfrutar del concierto y el after party con personas maravillosas como Anette, Rocco, Chris y Anna. Creo que Christian Schäfer ha conseguido una grabación con un sonido excelente.

Si tuviera que ponerle un pero a “Have Courage Dear Heart” es que queda claro que “Skylight” y “Gravity” son piedras angulares en su nuevo repertorio pero quizá incluir tres versiones de la primera y dos de la segunda pueda ser excesivo para el no-fan comprador de este EP. Los demás, por supuesto, estamos encantados de poder escuchar diferentes registros de la misma pieza.

Hecho este balance solo puedo deciros dos cosas, estoy deseando que legue el 7 de mayo para que la edición en vinilo vea la luz. Y la segunda es que a nivel espero que podamos superar esta maldita pandemia y podamos volver a reunirnos todos con Liv en Alte Seminarturnhalle el día… (tendrás que leer la entrevista que publicaremos dentro de unos días para saber la fecha).
