Midnattsol + Deathtiny + Coronatus

On May 25th, 2018 Midnattsol released their fourth studio album The Aftermath and played their first live show in seven years. As a venue they chose R’n’P Wiesloch, a very small metal club in the municipality of Wiesloch. Wiesloch is a small town in Germany actually just about 13 kilometers south of beautiful Heidelberg but due to the lack of public transport seemingly in the middle of nowhere and hard to get to without a car. The fact that there were school holidays in some parts of Germany also contributed to the the circumstances that there were only about 90 people in the audience. Nevertheless the announcement of the first Midnattsol concert since 2011 even attracted fans from distant places like England, Belgium, Denmark and Greece.
The venue is a small metal club right next to the outdoor swimming pool and since the weather was quite hot (for German conditions), the club felt like a sauna quite fast. As support the organizer of the concert chose two local bands. Deathtiny (the name is a mix of the two words “death“ and “destiny“) around singer Julia Mann played a short but convincing set and Coronatus entered the stage with even two female and one male vocalist and played mostly songs from their latest release Secrets of Nature.

Midnattsol came on stage around 10 pm and right from the start it was obvious that the band still needs time to cope with the recent changes in the line up. Former drummer Chris Merzinsky and bassist Birgit Öllbrunner left the band after the release of The Metamorphosis Melody. That is why keyboarder Daniel Fischer had to change to bass and the band had to find a session drummer for the live shows. Michael Kapelle agreed to support the band for the two shows that weekend. As a consequence the interaction between the band members especially with the drums is still to be improved a lot. That is the reason why it happened more than once that the drums were out of time and the guitars had a lot to do to keep the melodies of the tracks running.
But the most significant change in the line up is former Theatre of Tragedy singer Liv Kristine who joined her sister’s band as a second vocalist after she had been kicked out of her own band Leaves’ Eyes two years ago. As a beautiful contrast to her sister’s white dress, Liv was dressed all in black. With Carmen and Liv knowing each other their entire lives, the collaboration and interaction between the two sisters was outstanding. Despite her long absence from stage (apart from some concerts with her second band Savn) Carmen showed that she is definitely able to lead an internationally well-reputed band like Midnattsol and it was Liv’s two decades of experience that helped a lot to cover up for the many misunderstandings between the drums and the string instruments and to literally paper over the cracks that sadly could not be denied.

Since the concert was meant to be the release party of The Aftermath, the band mostly played songs from their latest album and the two fan favorites En Natt i Nord from Nordlys (2008) and Haunted (as an encore) from Where Twilight Dwells (2005). My personal highlights were the duets Syns Sang and Purple Sky as well as Liv’s solo song Eitrdråpar, in which she hit the high notes in a very impressive way. Since Eitrdråpar was the only song which Liv performed without her sister, she could not resist to make some ironic remarks on “stealing“ a band from another vocalist.
After the show the band gave autographs and took photos with the audience for almost two more hours. In the meantime the fans were able to purchase the new album and T-Shirts at the merchandise stand outside. The band also made it clear that they were aware of not yet being able to keep up with the high quality of the album in the live concerts and therefore have drawn the consequence to now put all effort on finding a permanent drummer and a new bass player before they can plan more concert dates.

Midnattsol están de regreso siete años después de su último trabajo. “The aftermath”, las consecuencias en español, es el reflejo de lo que ha pasado todos estos años, de la madurez musical y personal de sus componentes y de la incursión de nuevos mimbres que fortalecen el espíritu de la banda.
Por primera vez las hermanas Espenaes están juntas de pleno derecho en una banda y nosotros solo podemos celebrarlo. Y por primera vez en España, las juntamos en esta entrevista.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): Liv, hace ya algunos meses desde nuestra última entrevista, ¿cómo estás a nivel personal y cómo van las cosas en casa? Sé que eres una mujer completamente nueva, con una nueva vida, eres tu propia jefa y has encontrado el VERDADERO amor…
LIV (L): ¡Gracias, mi familia está realmente bien! Cuando unas puertas se cierran, muchas otras se abren. Estoy dejando el pasado atrás y, sin embargo, aprendiendo de la experiencia y ese siempre ha sido mi camino a seguir, además me he ido encontrando más fuerte y más clarividente día a día desde que tuve que volver a empezar desde cero hace dos años y medio.
La vida no puede ser mejor y abrazo, cada día, todo lo que pueda añadir a mi diario. Ahora presto más atención a mi voz interior y mis necesidades y tengo una voz más fuerte, soy mi propio jefe y quiero compartir mi experiencia con los demás. Estoy trabajando en un taller para ayudar e inspirar a otros a fortalecer su voz y abrirse a nuevas posibilidades aquí y ahora. Era el momento de darme cuenta que yo soy lo primero y que a veces hay que saber decir “no”. Mi familia ha encontrado una nueva casa y sí, he encontrado el verdadero amor. Para mí, y para el hombre con el que compartiré mi vida, el verdadero amor está basado en la amistad, un sentimiento positivo hacia la vida en términos generales, algunos intereses compartidos y la percepción y comprensión mutua de valores como el valor, la libertad, la honestidad y la empatía.

EM: Vamos a hablar de Midnattsol porque este es tu primer proyecto de estudio con tu hermana Carmen. Sí, habéis cantado juntas en directo y ella ha colaborado con Leaves’ Eyes pero Midnattsol es un proyecto conjunto real ¿Qué sientes al poder trabajar junto con ella en la misma banda?
L: Desde que cantamos juntas “I Am Free“ en Wieze para el MFVF’16 las dos supimos que el futuro nos iba a brindar más posibilidades como hermanas dentro de la música.
Fue un momento mágico. Carmen dijo en el escenario, presentándome, “Recuerda Liv, tu siempre eres libre!”, me emocioné hasta llorar. Unirme a Midnattsol es como una revelación para mí y Carmen y yo siempre nos hemos transmitido mucha fuerza y seguridad la una a la otra.
Cuando escuché algunas de las nuevas canciones en otoño de 2017 pensé “deseo ser parte de eso”. El disco tiene un mensaje muy importante para Carmen y para mí en lo personal… lastimar a otros intencionadamente tiene consecuencias sobre los malos actos, fechorías o criminalidades. Además, creo en el karma y el karma está en todas partes.

EM: Liv ¿donde te sientes más cómoda cantando, con el Gothic Metal de Theatre of Tragedy, con la música más épica de Leaves’ Eyes o más Folk de Midnattsol?
L: Me encanta la libertad de moverme dentro de cualquier estilo musical! Se trata de libertad y encontrar la expresión adecuada. Junto a la música de mis bandas, me han escuchado cantar música como Louis Armstrong, composiciones clásicas como “Ave Maria” o “Pie Jesu”, y también duetos con varios artistas y bandas como John Kelly, Maite Itoiz, Tanzwut y Cradle of Filth. Solo busco sentirme cómoda cuando canto, con lo que canto y con quien trabajo.

EM: Midnattsol siempre ha tenido una sola vocalista ¿porqué habéis decidido incluir una segunda voz en la banda?
L: Carmen y yo tenemos voces diferentes pero nos complementamos la una a la otra como solo las hermanas pueden hacer. Hay una energía especial entre nosotras.

EM: Midnattsol han estado en stand by durante más de cinco años ¿qué ha pasado? ¿Tuvisteis problemas personales o solo diferencias musicales?
Carmen (C): Antes de nada, muchísimas gracias, Marc, por esta entrevista, tu trabajo y todo tu apoyo porque significan mucho para nosotros. Hay varias razones y es un poco complicado explicarlo todo con detalle pero me gustaría decir que los motivos principales han sido: importantes cambios en nuestras vidas como tener niños, construir casas, nuevos trabajos… y todo eso comportó una composición nada eficiente. Teníamos muchas ideas y no podíamos acabar las canciones porque estábamos centrados en otras cosas y diferentes direcciones musicales. También teníamos diferentes ideas sobre cómo debían ser escritas las canciones. Y con todo eso los años iban pasando y yo empezaba a estar centrada en mi otra banda noruega, SAVN, aunque nuestro deseo nunca fue acabar con Midnattsol pues es mi criatura musical y siempre lo será, no importa lo que suceda.
No puedo describir lo feliz que soy viendo que todo eso ya es pasado y que finalmente hemos podido acabar las canciones y hacer un nuevo disco. Muchas gracias a todos los que nos han apoyado todos estos años y no nos han dejado caer, ¡significa mucho para nosotros!

EM: Quizá los elementos Folk están más presentes que nunca con cortes como “Herr Mannelig”, „Vem kann segla“ o “Eitrdropar”? ¿Estáis de acuerdo conmigo?
C: ¡Sí, totalmente! En los otros discos también habían elementos Folk pero en “The aftermath” creo que hay más y, definitivamente, esa es la dirección en la que vamos cada vez más.
A mí me inspiran las canciones Folk y las historias y me encanta aprender sobre aquellos viejos días. Creo que “Forsaken” también es muy folky y, definitivamente, es mi tema preferido del disco. Fue escrita por Alex, nuestro guitarrista, que también adora las canciones Folk.
L: ¡Me encanta el enfoque Folk de “The aftermath”! Está delicadamente presente y subraya nuestro amor por la influencia Folk y nuestro patrimonio cultural. Sin embargo, no es una constante en el sonido de cada canción. Las historias folkloricas es algo muy importante en la historia cultural escandinava. Y sí, es parte del patrimonio tanto de Carmen como mío. Nacimos en un lugar llamado Hafrsfjord donde Snorri Sturlason dice que Noruega se unificó en 872 por Harald (I) Hårfagre. «Eitrdråpar» y «Syns Song» son dos canciones en las que la mitología noruega cobra un papel importante.

EM: “Herr Mannelig” es un tema muy popular que se ha versionado mucho ¿qué tiene de especial la versión de Midnattsol? Haggard, In Extremo, Tibetréa, Alsuna, u Othalan ya la versionaron en el pasado…
C: Nuestro guitarrista, bajista y productor, Stephen, fue el que tuvo la idea de versionar esta famosa canción Folk sueca. Creo que ofrece un poco de todo porque es oscura, melódica y con elementos Folk, además de tranquilidad y un crescendo. Las voces están en un rango más bajo y a veces se oyen muy altas dentro del Female Fronted Metal.

EM: ¿Qué pueden esperar vuestros fans de “The aftermath” y cuál creéis que será su respuesta?
L: ¡La respuesta de los fans está siendo abrumadora! Después de perder mi propia banda, Leaves’ Eyes, que ya no volverá a estar en mis manos nunca más, no podría sentirme más como en casa que en Midnattsol. “The aftermath” con tiene un mensaje importante y una energía muy especial y buena, y nuestros fans de todo el mundo parece que así lo reconocen y lo aprecian. Sentimos una conexión muy fuerte con nuestros fans y su voz y sus opiniones son importantes para nosotros.
C: Uno de los objetivos de este disco es ofrecer un mensaje importante y es que hay que despertarse antes que sea demasiado tarde. Siento que vamos en una dirección totalmente equivocada. La portada, el título y las canciones están conectados como en un círculo y deben recordarnos este mensaje en su conjunto.
Musicalmente contiene baladas emocionales como “The unveiled truth”, canciones Folk como “Vem kan segla”, “Syns sang” o “Eitrdopar”, otras más oscuras y complejas como “The purple sky” y la version “Herr Mannelig”, también medios tiempos como “Ikje glem meg” y “The aftermath” y para acabar, aunque no menos importante, un tema instrumental. ¡Esperamos que os gusten las nuevas canciones!

EM: El disco contiene elementos Folk pero también creo que es más melódico que “Nordlys” y quizá sea el paso adelante que cabía esperar tras “The metamorphosis melody” ¿estás de acuerdo conmigo?
C: ¡Sí, totalmente de acuerdo! Que las melodías sean preciosas es lo más importante para mí cuando hablamos de música, para sentirla, para sentir el mensaje, la atmósfera… Me hace muy feliz cuando surgen ideas sobre melodías que me llegan, me hace sentir viva.

EM: Por primera vez Carmen y tú estáis juntas en la portada de una revista ¿Qué significa eso para ti?
L: ¡El poder de las hermanas noruegas del Metal! Acabo de llegar del kiosko de comprar tres copias para mi familia.
C: Es algo indescriptible para mí el poder estar ahí con mi alma gemela. Creo que representa nuestro amor y nuestra conexión musical y personal y el fuerza de las hermanas. Creo que la enmarcaré cuando tenga mi copia.

EM: ¿Tenéis prevista alguna gira con Midnattsol o solo algún concierto de presentación?
L / C: Estamos trabajando en ello, sobretodo para poder actuar en festivales. No es fácil organizarlo todo teniendo niños y trabajos a tiempo completo además de la música pero con el tiempo todo será más fácil.
Estamos ansiosos por poder tocar en directo porque al fin podremos encontrarnos con nuestros fans cara a cara y mostrarles las nuevas canciones.

EM: Parece que 2018 está siendo un gran año para en ti dentro de la música… disco y conciertos con Midnattsol, conciertos en solitario y posible disco…¿puedes dar más detalles a tus fans de todo ello?
L: ¡Totalmente! Solo quedan unos días para que salga a la venta “The aftermath“. En cuanto a mi disco en solitario, las demos están listas para ser grabadas tan pronto como mi discográfica esté preparada para ello. Estoy deseando poder tocar esas canciones en directo en los conciertos que voy a dar en Rusia y el resto de Europa a finales de año.
Por otra parte, estoy valorando hacer algunos duetos que me han pedido y por si fuera poco hay más noticias. Este año The Sabbathian editaran su disco y voy a cantar en el con mi amiga Anette.

EM: ¿Qué me puedes contar de tu próximo disco en solitario? ¿En qué punto te encuentras en estos momentos?
L: Como te decía antes, tengo las demos listas y va a ser un disco puro de Metal, siguiendo la línea de “Vervain”, sin embargo, algunas canciones van a ser más pesadas y algunas más orientadas al Doom. Adoro el Doom Metal, las melodías pesadas, la libertad de dejar que la energía fluya en los arreglos de la voz.
Mis nuevas composiciones dejan mucho espacio a la magia con líneas vocales de ensueño y muchísimas melodías excelentes. Tengo varios invitados especiales en mente por lo que sí, habrá duetos.
Mirando atrás, mis discos en solitario han sido para mí un medio para comunicar mis propias experiencias, sueños, esperanzas y altibajos de mi vida. A veces cuando, hoy día, canto o leo mis letras me doy cuenta que son muy directas.
Me sorprenden incluso habiendo escrito yo misma cada una de esas palabras en algún momento de mi vida porque están sin pulir y salen directamente de mi alma. Disco a disco me he ido expresando de forma más directa. Soy afortunada por haber encontrado una vía para canalizar mis emociones y mi propia voz a través de la música y la pintura. Animo a todo el mundo a expresarse por sí mismo a través del arte porque fortalece tu propia voz interna. Es algo que me gustaría explicaros y compartir con vosotros en mis próximos talleres ¡os invito a todos a participar!

Seven years after their last release, Midnattsol are back. “ The Aftermath“ is their reflection on what happened in all those years, on their maturation in both music and personal life and – at the same time – introduces the new band members who fortify the spirit within the band. For the first time the Espenaes sisters are both full members of the same band and this is something we can only celebrate. And for the first time in Spain, we bring them both together in this interview.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): It’s been some months since our last interview. How do you feel? How are things going at home? I know that you are a new woman with a new life, that you are your own boss now and that you have finally found TRUE love!
LIV KRISTINE ESPENAES (L): Thank you, my family is doing really well! When doors have to close, many more will open. Leaving past behind, however, learning from experience has always been my path, moreover, I have found strength and clarity for myself day by day since I had to start all over again 2,5 years ago. Life hasn’t been better and I embrace every day whatever it adds to my diary. I pay more attention to my own inner voice and needs. I have a much stronger voice now, I am my own boss, and I wish to share my experience with others. I am working on a work shop to help and inspire others to strengthen their own voice and to open up for new possibilities in the here & now. It was time to realise that I actually have to put myself first and that it’s ok to say “no” sometimes. My family have found a new home and yes, I have found true love. For me, and the man I will share my life with, true love is anchored in friendship, a positive feeling towards life in general, some shared interests as well as a common perception and understanding of values, worth, freedom, honesty and empathy.

EM: Let’s talk about Midnattsol since this project is the very first one with you and your sister. Yes, you performed together on stage and she did some contributions for Leaves’ Eyes but Midnattsol is a real project. How do you feel about working with your sister in the same band?
L: Since we performed „I Am Free“ on stage in Wieze, MFVF 2016, we both knew that the future will bring more possibilities for us as sisters in music. That was a magic moment. Carmen said on stage, introducing me, “Remember, Liv, you are always free!” I was moved to tears. It is a revelation to join Midnattsol and Carmen and I have always given each other strength and security. As I heard some of the new tracks including lyrics of “The Aftermath” in Autumn 2017, I thought “I wish to be a part of this”. The album had a very important message for Carmen and also for me personally. Whoever hurt others intentionally will have to take the consequences of his misdeeds and criminal or bad acts. Moreover, I believe in Karma and Karma is everywhere.

EM: Where do you feel more comfortable while singing? Is it gothic music as in Theatre of Tragedy, more epic music as in Leaves’ Eyes or more folk as in Midnattsol?
L: I love the freedom to move within the whole spectrum of music! It’s all about freedom in creativity and finding the right expression. Next to my own bands, you have heard me performing music by Louis Armstrong, classical compositions of Ave Maria and Pie Jesu, as well as doing duets with various artists and bands from John Kelly, Maite Itoiz, Tanzwut and Cradle of Filth. I just want to feel comfortable when I sing, with what I sing and with whom I am working.

EM: Midnattsol have always had only one vocalist, Carmen. Why did you choose to include a second voice in the band?
L: We have different singing voices, however, we complement each other in a way that only sisters can. There is that special energy.

EM: Midnattsol were on a hiatus for more than five years. What happened? Were you having personal problems or maybe some musical differences?
CARMEN ELISE ESPENAES (C): First of all: Thank you so much Marc for doing this interview, your work and support mean a lot us <3 There are many reasons and it`s a bit complicated to explain everything in detail. But I would say that the main reasons are huge privat changes in our lives such as having children, building houses, new jobs etc and the fact that the song writing process was very inefficient. We had so many ideas and couldn’t finish the songs, because we focused on different things and different musical directions. We also had different ideas on how the songs should be written. All in all, the years went by, and I started to focus on my other Norwegian band SAVN. But it was never the wish of ending Midnattsol, it is my musical baby and will always be, no matter what happens. I can’t describe how happy I am that this is now the past and that we finally made it to finish the songs and soon bring out the new album! Thanks a lot to everyone who supported us through all these years and never gave us up, that means a lot to us!! [infobox title='LIV KRISTINE'] I love the folk sound on “The Aftermath”! It is delicately present and underlines our love for folk influence and cultural heritage (...) Folk tales is something that is very important in Scandinavian cultural history. And yes, it is also a part in Carmen and my heritage.[/infobox] EM: Maybe Folk elements are more present than ever with songs as “Herr Mannelig” o “Eitrdropar”? Do you agree with me?
C: Yes I agree! There were folk elements on the other albums as well, but on our new album «The Aftermath» I think it`s even more, and this is a direction where we definetly are heading more and more. I feel inspired by folk songs and tales, and I love learning more about the earlier days. I think the song «Forsaken» is also quite folky, and this is my absolute favorite on the album. It was written by our Guitarist Alex , who also loves folk songs.
L: I love the folk sound on “The Aftermath”! It is delicately present and underlines our love for folk influence and cultural heritage, however, it is not always constantly dominant in the sound of every track. Folk tales is something that is very important in Scandinavian cultural history. And yes, it is also a part in Carmen and my heritage. We were born at that place named Hafrsfjord where it’s said and written by Snorri Sturlason that Norway was united for the first time by Harald (I) Hårfagre in the year of 872. «Eitrdråpar» and «Syns Song» are two songs for which Nordic mythology plays an influential role.

EM: “Herr Mannelig” is a very popular song for a cover… In your opinion, what’s special in the Midnattsol version of that song? Haggard, In Extremo, Tibetréa, Alsuna, Othalan all did a cover in the past…
C:EM: What can your fans expect from “The Aftermath” and what was the first feedback from the fans?
L: The feedback from the fans has been overwhelming! After the loss of my own band, Leaves’ Eyes, which is unfortunately not in my hands anymore, I couldn’t feel more at home joining Midnattsol. The “Aftermath” has a fine and important message and a very special and good energy, and our supporters all over the world seem to recognise and appreciate this. We feel a strong connection to our fans and their voice and opinions are important to us.
C: One of the goals of this album is to bring out an important message, we have to wake up before it’s too late! I feel that we are heading in a total wrong direction. The cover, the title and the songs are connected together as in a circle and should remind us of this message all in all together.
Musically you have emotional ballads like «The unveiled truth», folk songs like “Vem kan segla“, “Syns Sang“ and “Eitrdopar“, darker and more complex songs like “The purple sky“ and the cover “Herr Mannelig“, and also more midtempo songs like “Ikje glem meg“ and “The Aftermath“ and last but not least an instrumental song. We hope you like the new songs!! ☺

EM: There are folk elements on the album but I think this album, at least the four songs I’ve been listening to so far, is more melodic than “Nordlys” but maybe it is the logical step forward from “The Metamorphosis Melody”. Do you agree with me?
C: Yes I agree with you! Beautiful melodies are the most important for me when it comes to music, in order to feel the music, what it is really about, the message, the atmosphere aso. It makes me so happy when ideas of touching melodies come up, then I really feel alive.

EM: For the very first time Carmen and you are together on a magazine front cover. What does it mean to you?
L: Norwegian Metal sister power! I actually went to the kiosk and bought three copies of “Orkus“ for my family.
C: It means indescribably much to me to be on the cover together with my soulmate <3 I think that represents our love, musical and personal connection and sister power, and I guess I will frame it when I get a copy of it ;) [infobox title='LIV KRISTINE']Thinking back, my solo albums have been a medium for me to communicate about my own experience, dreams, hopes, ups and downs etc. in my life. When I sometimes sing or read my lyrics today, I realise how direct they are. They surprise me, even if I wrote every word myself at some point in my life history, because they are unpolished and raw from the soul. My expression has become more direct album by album.[/infobox] EM: Are you planning a tour with Midnattsol? At the moment you have confirmed only the release show.
L / C: We are working on it, especially shows at festivals. It’s not that easy to organise with kids and fulltime jobs besides the music, but as the time goes by, it will be easier. We are so looking forward to the upcoming shows – finally we can meet our fans face to face and show the new songs!

EM: It seems that 2018 will be one of your best years in the music industry… The album with Midnattsol, solo shows and maybe your solo album. Can you give us and your fans some more details about your schedule?
L: Absolutely! It’s only a few days until the Midnattsol album will be released. My demos are ready to be recorded, I will release my sixth solo album as soon as my record label is ready. I can’t wait to play these songs live and to get my new songs out to my fans. I have some upcoming shows for Russia and Europe later this year. I’ve also had interesting enquiries concerning duets. More good news: This year The Sabbathian will release their album, on which I am joining my friend Anette in duets.

EM: What about your new album? At which point of the process are you now (recording, writing lyrics, working on demos…)? Please tell me something that you haven’t told to the media yet.
L: As mentioned above, I have my demos ready. It will be a pure metal album, following in the veins of „Vervain“, however, some tracks will be heavier, some more doom oriented. I love doom metal, I love strong melodies, I love the freedom to let the energy flow in the vocal arrangements. My new compositions offers a lot of space for magic, dream-like vocal lines and the build-up excellent tunes. I have some special guests in mind, so yes, there will be duets. Thinking back, my solo albums have been a medium for me to communicate about my own experience, dreams, hopes, ups and downs etc. in my life. When I sometimes sing or read my lyrics today, I realise how direct they are. They surprise me, even if I wrote every word myself at some point in my life history, because they are unpolished and raw from the soul. My expression has become more direct album by album. I am lucky to have found a way in processing my emotions and inner voice through music and painting. I encourage everyone to express themselves through art. This will strengthen your inner voice. This is something I would like to tell you about and share with you in my future work shops. I welcome you all to join in!

Tras siete años de silencio, Midnattsol están de regreso con «The aftermath». Muchas cosas han pasado en el seno de la banda pero cuando muchos ya los daban por muertos vuelven por sus fueros. Carmen Elise Espenaes ha resucitado la banda y han habido importantes cambios de formación como son la adquisición de Stephan Adolph (ex Ahab) y Liv Kristine Espenaes.
El resultado de esta profunda reestructuración se traduce en un álbum fantástico que, pese a seguir la senda marcada por «The metamorphosis melody», opta por una mayor incursión de elementos Folk fruto de las raíces de Carmen y Liv y sobretodo de la aportación compositiva de Stephen como por ejemplo en «Herr Mannelig» y que incluye dos temas basados en la mitología vikinga como son «Eitrdråpar» y «Syns Sang».
Pero quizá el elemento más significativo de cara al oyente sea la aparición de Liv Kristine en este trabajo y es que, pese a ser la segunda voz de la banda, su integración es tal que hasta contesta parte de las entrevistas y atiende a los medios de comunicación, como si llevara ahí toda la vida. Carmen y Liv se compenetran a la perfección y el entendimientos entre ambas transmite una química única llegando a fusionarse ambas voces en algo muy poderoso.
«Syns sang» se inicia con un teclado ensoñador para desarrollar los elementos clásicos de la banda; «Vem kan segla» ofrece la cálida voz de Carmen en un crescendo mágico; «Ikje glem meg», «Herr Mannelig», Forsaken» y Eitrdropar» son los temas más Folk con Carmen y Liv brillando y compenetrándose a muy alto nivel.
«The aftermath» es un disco muy completo en el que la banda no traiciona sus raíces ni lo que los fans ya conocen de ellos; un trabajo con el que pisan sobreseguro, sin arriesgar pero fortaleciendo su propuesta.

Carmen Elise Espenaes ha dejado de ser la hermanísima para ser una artista meritoria y parte de Savn y la banda de culto Midnattsol. Hace tiempo que en Empire queríamos saber de ella y qué se cuece en su entorno musical y por la amistad que nos une a ella nos fue fácil charlar y que nos contara todo lo que está por venir.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): ¿Cómo estáis tu familia y tu?
CARMEN ELISE ESPENAES (CEE): Hola Marc, ¡un gusto volver a hablar contigo. No puedo explicarte lo que significa para mí todo el apoyo que me das! Mi familia y yo estamos bien, espero que vosotros también! Por primera vez voy a pasar unos días de mis hijos y es un sentimiento especial y extraño. Ahora mismo estoy en Copenhage de camino a ver a mis compañeros en Midnattsol y mi hermana ¡Tenemos grandes planes!

EM: El año pasado tocaste por primera vez en el Metal Female Voices Fest y supongo que te sentiste especial ¿cómo fue el concierto?
CEE: Es difícil explicar con palabras porque fue muy especial en muchos sentidos. Tocar con Savn por primera supuso un sentimiento único para todos nosotros y finalmente pudimos compartir nuestras canciones con todos nuestros fans. Creía que estaba en otro mundo y me emocionó mucho encontrarme con amigos y fans de todo el mundo. Fue muy divertido tanto dentro como fuera del escenario y la fiesta acabó bastante tarde (risas). Intenté hablar y atender a todo el mundo, abrazarles, tomarme fotos con todos los que lo requerían pero pese a lo que se alargó todo sentí que fue muy corto. Con mi hermana solo pude compartir unos minutos en el escenario ¡ojalá hubiésemos tenido más tiempo!

EM: Tu hermana cantó contigo “I’m free” y supongo que para ti siempre es especial cantar con ella…
CEE: Una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida es poder subirnos juntas a un escenario. Fue absolutamente mágico ¡sister power! La quiero mucho, es mi alma gemela y fue genial también que tres mujeres (incluyendo a Ingvild, violinista y cantante) cantáramos juntas con diferentes voces pues eso dio una nueva dimensión a la canción y casó a la perfección con el título, “I’m free”.

EM: ¿Puedes introducir a los nuevos miembros de Savn?
CEE: El compositor principal e ingeniero de sonido es Oyvind, que también toca el bajo y otros instrumentos. Jan Cato es nuestro batería y Tommy nuestro guitarrista. Todos ellos son músicos expertos y divertidos.

EM: ¿Qué sucedió con Stig Johansson y Anders Thue? ¿Porqué no están en la banda?
CEE: Anders pronto dejó la banda por razones personales pero Stig y el resto continuamos escribiendo canciones para Savn. Justo antes de entrar al estudio a grabar nuestra nueva demo Stig dejó la banda porque tenía otros planes musicales y tuvimos que empezar de nuevo con nuevas canciones.

EM: ¿Cómo son las nuevas canciones de Savn?
CEE: Sí, ya tenemos escrito parte del material del nuevo álbum gracias a Oyvind, el genio musical! Hemos trabajado de maravilla con él porque toca un montón de instrumentos, s un gran motivador y también un gran ingeniero de sonido. Se ha convertido en un gran amigo y estamos en contacto casi a diario. Me permite explorar en la música y ser yo misma al 100% y me siento muy agradecida porque quiera trabajar conmigo y por su paciencia para conmigo por la vida tan ocupada que tengo.

EM: CDR Records editó vuestro primer disco pero solo trabaja con vosotros ¿Qué tipo de discográfica es CDR?
CEE: CDR es nuestra propia discográfica y es propiedad de mi novio Rune, mi buen amigo Dagfinn y yo misma (ahora entendemos las siglas del nombre, ndr.). A menudo me encargo yo misma de enviar el merch a los fans por lo que si pides algo es probable que te lo envíe yo personalmente.

EM: ¡Midnattsol estáis trabajando de nuevo! Eso son excelentes noticias para vuestros fans ¿cómo ha surgido esta reunión?
CEE: En realidad nunca hemos estado parados, solo hemos ido extremadamente despacio al encontrarnos ciertas piedras en el camino. Tenemos unas cuantas buenas canciones inacabadas esperando a ser completadas. Hace un tiempo Daniel dio una especie de ultimátum para ir más deprisa y mostrar nuestras nuevas canciones a nuestros fans. La nueva formación dijo “vamos allá” e hicimos una demo. Napalm Records nos dio un feedback abrumador y dijo que querían editar el disco y eso nos dio alegría y ansiedad y ahora estamos aquí, en el buen camino acabando las nuevas canciones.

EM: Háblame de la formación que teneis ahora mismo ¿es la formación original?
CEE: Ahora en Midnattsol está Daniel al teclado y Alex a la guitarra, que son miembros originales, y hemos añadido a Stephan como nuevo guitarrista. La conexión entre nosotros y nuestra amistad significa mucho para nosotros porque podemos hacer música de forma muy armónica y respetuosa a la vez. Somos un dreamteam y a Stephen ha empezado a gustarle el sentido del humor noruego y eso es una buena señal (risas).

EM: ¿Qué planes tenéis? ¿Hay posibilidad de salir de gira?
CEE: Primero queremos sacar el disco y luego sí haremos algunos conciertos. Hacer giras extensas es complicado para mí siendo madre de dos niños pequeños y profesora a tiempo completo. Creo que todo será más fácil cuando los niños crezcan. ¡Espero que sigan habiendo nueva música y más videos!

EM: ¿Qué disco verá la luz antes?
CEE: Creo que será el de Midnattsol aunque el de Savn le seguirá de cerca. Todos estamos completamente centrados en la composición y es genial! Muchos artistas dicen que lo mejor es subirse a un escenario pero para mí es componer música. Me siento viva cuando escribo melodías y las veo crecer y, paso a paso, se convierten en canciones. Es genial sentirse conectada con amigos de una forma especial trabajando y buscando el mismo objetivo.

EM: Eres la imagen de Aziza World Fragances “SunRiser” ¿Cómo contactaste con ellos?
CEE: Val, la organizadora del Metal Female Voices Fest me llamó y me habló del interés de Aziza y casi me da algo ¡qué honor ser requerida para algo así! Es el mejor perfume que he tenido nunca y el que utilizo a diario.

EM: ¿Cómo te sentiste haciendo de modelo para Aziza? ¿Cómo fue la experiencia?
CEE: Me siento muy orgullosa y honrada por haber podido vivir la experiencia de hacer algo así ¡gracias Aziza y gracias Val! Los productos Aziza son únicos y crean aromas únicas basadas en productos naturales y hemos trabajado mano a mano con lo que represento. Espero que haya mucha gente que descubra sus productos pues algunos de ellos son tan sabrosos que desearías comértelos, de hecho mis hijos me preguntaron si tenían muffins (risas).

EM: ¿Quieres añadir algo más?
CEE: Gracias por todo el apoyo. Tenerte conmigo después de todos estos años significa mucho para mí. Que todos los fans estén atentos porque algunas de las mejores canciones de Midnattsol y Savn aún no han sido escuchadas, ¡se vienen noticias excitantes!
