In a few days will take place the sixth edition of a festival dedicated to the dark and heavy sounds: Madrid Is the Dark. One of the bands that will play is Clouds, a respected band in the underground of the Doom Metal scene. It will be the first time that Clouds perform in our country. Because of that special occasion and also the release of their brand new album ‘Dor’, we had the perfect excuse to chat with Daniel Neagoe about that.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): Hello Daniel! How are you? First of all, thank you for your time answering our questions before Clouds performance at Madrid Is The Dark. I suppose that you are extremely busy with the promotion of your brand new album ‘Dor’. Even though the release was few days ago, how has been the feedback from the audience and the press?
DANIEL NEAGOE (DN): Hello and thank you for this chance. I must say that the feedback so far has been amazing and I could not be happier with all the kind words everyone has sent our way. Whether it be emails or messages or simply just worded personally, those words mean so much to us.

EM: Let’s talk about ‘Dor’. In this third album we can find the atmospheric Doom Metal that Clouds usually do. In my opinion, the difference with the previous releases is that in the new one the
sound is much better, more cohesive. Besides of that, I think that ‘Dor’ is an album more vulnerable than the previous ones because it offers more tragedy and grief in an extremely
beautiful way. In a composition level, which are the differences between ‘Dor’ and the previous releases?
DN: There is nothing compared to missing someone, physically and emotionally, longing after someone especially if that particular person is gone from this world and this is what ‘Dor’ has to offer. A simultaneous journey through longing and grief altogether. The sound is indeed better and more elaborate. I worked relentlessly on expanding on the ideas we gathered for this album and also on the mix and master.

EM: In ‘Dor’ we also find a lot of new things. First, Irina Movileanu has joined the band as a violin player. Has she contribute in the compositions of ‘Dor’ or has you manage all by yourself?
DN: Irina joined when the album was pretty much done however her input on love shows has made me realise I needed a musician like her and I cannot wait to work together on future songs.

EM: We also can listen the voices of Gogo Melone (Aeonian Sorrow) and Pim Blankestein (Officium Triste) in two songs. Both of them collaborated with Clouds before. But also we found more
collaborations from Sylvaine, Mihu (Abigail), Kayla Dixon (Witch Mountain) and Caleb Bergen (Sleepwalkers), although they are only available in the songs that are in the double disc limited
edition. Why did you chose them and what can every one of them contribute in Clouds sound?
DN: Some of these musicians are old friends and some are new to our family however friends nonetheless. There is a tradition if you will, an initial tradition to gather the musicians we think fit with our concept and with our music, we aren’t trying to achieve anything by inviting these amazing people to collaborate with us, but more to emphasize with their voices or instruments their value as musicians and bring their own vision on our songs. And we haven’t been wrong so far :)

EM: Speaking about the limited edition, I was surprised when I saw that the second disc, the one with the collaborations mentioned before, will be only available for the ones that buy the limited
edition. I understand that is a way of reward the fans that spend more money in Clouds, but at the same time the rest of your fanbase couldn’t listen these collaborations. Why did you decide to
split the songs and collaborations in that way?
DN: The second disc will not be entirely hidden from our fans, however a physical version will -for now- be at a halt from their collection. I believe the time will come for another special package when our fans will be able to have it and I’m just waiting for this special occasion.

EM: By the way, there is any fetish with letter D? The title of your three releases begin with D (Doliu, Departe, Dor), the same with the EP (Destin) and the Single (Do You See Me). Is that for a concrete reason? And… your name also starts in D!! Hehe
DN: There is indeed a strong connection regarding the letter «D»; and there have been many speculations around this subject. However the topic is far too personal and unfortunately I will never reveal its true sense. I’m sure everyone understands.

EM: As a promotion of the new album you have released a music video of the song “Dor”. In that video we can see Kostas Panagioutou (Pantheist) as a main character. Which relation do you have with
him? Why did you chose him to do that?
DN: Myself and Kostas are old friends, band mates in Pantheist and i think he is one of the most expressive people I’ve ever met, hence it’s no surprise I’ve asked him to perform on the video and I’m truly cannot be happier with the outcome. I’ve chosen a simple yet effective display of emotion without the use or need for CGI effects. I believe in simplitude and not in pompous artefacts.

EM: Moreover, you have been the director of the video. Explain us, how has been all the creation process?
DN: It was very simple and very spontaneous. I’ve revealed the story to Kostas and I’ve let him interpret his character as he felt it. Nothing was particularly staged or rehearsed. I wish I had more to say regarding this subject but I’d only fill the blank spaces with nonsense.

EM: Let’s talk about Madrid Is The Dark as your first performance in Spain. Your confirmation in the festival was a good surprise and we are really expectant about seeing you in concert. What offers Clouds in a concert?
DN: We never take a gig fornthe sake of playing a show. Those who have followed us have seen that we don’t have many shows. But those we do have are very special and in very good company and location.
Because MITD is a special place and a fantastic festival with a worldwide reputation, we are honoured to participate. We always give our best, we always plan special setlists and make sure
whatever we do on stage is 100% us. Expect a lot of emotion and quite a few surprises.

EM: Will you play a setlist based in the new album or will you prepare a special setlist with songs from all Clouds history because it is the first performance in Spain.?
DN: As I said we have a few very pleasant surprises for this show and I’m sure everyone will be extremely happy with them. However we can’t reveal any of these surprises and we’d prefer to… well, let them be surprises.

EM: You are going to play next Friday 7th December and you are going to share stage with Aathma, Animatter, Forgotten Tomb, Shining and Solstafir. What opinion do you have about these bands?
Are you going to spend the whole weekend in Madrid to enjoy the festival?
DN: All these bands are very well respected bands and I personally like all of them. Some have a long history behind and a lot to work has been put into the music. I can only appreciate everything they do. Unfortunately we are returning home the next day after we play however I’m sure that we will return as spectators soon.

EM: Before finishing the interview it’s time for the question that your Spanish fanbase awaits: what kind of merchandise will you bring to the festival?
DN: Rhere will be CDs, t-shirts and vinyls in the stock limit, we always have limited editions however there will be plenty of all.

EM: That’s all, Daniel. Thank you so much for answer our questions and see you soon! If you want to add something or convince someone that aren’t sure about attending the festival, the last lines

DN: We are looking forward to playing the festival and we’d like to thank Jose and his team for his efforts to bring us there, it will be the first show in Spain and we would like it to be a memorable one. Thank you for the opportunity to say a few words!

En pocos días tendrá lugar la sexta edición del festival dedicado a los sonidos oscuros y pesados del país: el Madrid Is The Dark. Entre las confirmaciones de este año encontramos a Clouds, un grupo muy respetado en el ámbito underground del Doom Metal y que será la primera vez que pise nuestro país. Hace pocas semanas vio la luz su tercer largo ‘Dor’ y con esta excusa así como su inminente actuación en el festival aprovechamos para que su líder Daniel Neagoe nos respondiera a este cuestionario.

¡Hola Daniel! ¿Cómo va todo? Antes de nada, agradecer tu tiempo en contestar estas preguntas antes de la actuación de Clouds en el Madrid Is The Dark. Imaginamos que debes estar muy ocupado con la promoción de vuestro recién lanzamiento ‘Dor’. Aunque hace escasos días que éste ha visto la luz, ¿cómo está siendo la acogida del público?

¡Hola y gracias por esta oportunidad! Debo decir que los comentarios que estamos recibiendo son increíbles y no podría estar más contento con todas las palabras tan amables que hemos recibido por email, por mensaje y en persona. Significan mucho para nosotros.

Hablemos un poco de ‘Dor’. En este tercer largo seguimos encontrando ese Doom Metal de corte atmosférico que, bajo mi punto de vista, dista de los anteriores trabajos gracias a una mayor cohesión en el sonido. Además, encuentro que es un disco mucho más vulnerable que los anteriores, llegando a unos niveles de tragedia y duelo magníficamente bellos. A nivel compositivo, ¿qué podemos encontrar de distinto en ‘Dor’ que no se haya mostrado antes?

No hay nada comparado como echar de menos a alguien, bien sea de forma física como emocional, especialmente si esa persona se ha ido de este mundo, y esto es precisamente lo que ‘Dor’ ofrece. Es un viaje simultáneo a través del anhelo y la pena. También decir que el sonido es mucho mejor y más elaborado que nuestros anteriores discos, tal y como has apuntado. Se ha trabajado duro para plasmar todas las ideas que recopilamos y ejecutarlas en este disco, así como en la mezcla y en la posterior masterización.

En ‘Dor’ encontramos muchas novedades. Empezando por una nueva miembro en el grupo, Irina Movileanu al violín. ¿Ha aportado su visión musical a ‘Dor’ o todo ha sido gestionado con solo tus directrices?

Irina se unió a Clouds cuando el disco ya casi estaba compuesto, aunque el amor que transmite en los conciertos ha hecho darme cuenta que necesitamos a una músico como ella. Tengo curiosidad y ganas de saber cómo será trabajar con ella en futuras composiciones.

En ‘Dor’ volvemos a encontrar las voces de Gogo Melone (Aeonian Sorrow) y Pim Blankenstein (Officium Triste), así como de Sylvaine, Mihu (Abigail), Kayla Dixon (Witch Mountain) y Caleb Bergen (Sleepwalkers) aunque estas últimas tan solo disponible en las canciones que forman el segundo disco de la edición limitada de ‘Dor’. ¿Por qué y qué aporta cada uno de ellos para que hayan sido los elegidos en colaborar en este nuevo trabajo?

Algunos de estos músicos son antiguos amigos y otros hace poco que se unieron a la familia, pero aun así también son amigos. Podríamos decir que existe una tradición desde hace tiempo en la que se invita a aquellos músicos que creemos que encajan con el concepto y con nuestra música. Se trata tan solo de invitar a personas con un talento increíble a colaborar con nosotros, y así destacar su voz y talento como músicos pudiendo aportar, a la vez, su sonido a nuestras composiciones. Y por ahora nunca nos hemos equivocado J

Hablando de la edición limitada de ‘Dor’, me sorprende que en el segundo disco, que tan solo está disponible para aquellos que compren la edición limitada, haya tantas colaboraciones. Entiendo que es un modo de premiar al fan que invierte más dinero en Clouds, pero a la vez el resto de mortales no podremos escuchar estas colaboraciones. ¿Por qué has decidido este orden y separación de las canciones?

Bueno, realmente el segundo disco no es que esté oculto para nuestros seguidos, simplemente que en la versión física del disco (por lo menos por ahora) no hay lugar para ello y tan solo se encuentra en la edición limitada. Pero tengo fe en que habrá otra edición especial en la que nuestros seguidores puedan tener acceso a este disco en formato físico, y estoy a expensas de que surja esta ocasión especial.

Por cierto, ¿existe algún tipo de fetiche con la letra D? Los tres largos de Clouds empiezan con D (Doliu, Departe, Dor) así como el EP (Destin) y el Single (Do You See Me). ¿Es por algún motivo en concreto? Y ya puestos,… ¡tu nombre también empieza con D, jeje!

Pues sí, de hecho existe una fuerte conexión con la letra ‘D’ y he leído varias especulaciones al respecto. Sin embargo, esto es un tema muy personal y nunca desvelaré cuál es el verdadero significado. Espero que todo el mundo lo entienda.

Siguiendo con las canciones de ‘Dor’, el videoclip presentación correspondiente a la canción de mismo nombre, vemos a Kostas Panagioutou (Pantheist) como protagonista. ¿Qué unión tienes con él? ¿Por qué le elegiste como actor de este video?

Kostas y yo somos amigos desde hace muchos años, compañeros de grupo en Pantheist y además creo que es una de las personas más expresivas que he conocido. Por estos motivos no es una sorpresa que haya pensado en él para ser el protagonista del video. ¡Y estoy muy satisfecho con el resultado final! He elegido una muestra de emoción de forma simple y efectiva, sin necesidad de utilizar efectos generados por ordenador. Creo en la simplicidad y no en artefactos pomposos.

Así mismo, has sido el encargado de dirigir el videoclip. Cuéntanos, ¿cómo ha sido todo el proceso de creación?

Realmente ha sido algo muy simple y espontáneo. Tan solo he explicado una historia a Kostas y le he dejado que interpretase su personaje tal y como él lo sentía. No hubo nada que fuera excesivamente ensayado o escenografiado. Me gustaría poder decir alguna palabra más acerca de ello pero tan solo rellenaría el espacio con tonterías.

Hablemos del Madrid Is The Dark como vuestra primera actuación en tierras españolas. Vuestra confirmación fue un auténtico hype y tenemos muchísimas ganas de poder disfrutaros en directo ¿Qué ofrecen Clouds en directo?

Nunca aceptamos tocar en un concierto sin motivo alguno. Aquellos que nos habéis seguido a lo largo de estos años sabéis que no nos prodigamos en tocar en directo. Pero los que sí que aceptamos y ejecutamos son especiales y con muy buena compañía y un buen lugar. Y es que el Madrid Is The Dark es un lugar especial y un festival fantástico con una magnífica reputación en todo el mundo, y estamos encantados de poder participar. Nosotros siempre damos lo mejor de sí encima de un escenario, siempre pensamos en ofrecer un setlist especial y nos aseguramos que todo lo que ofrecemos sea 100% Clouds. Así que estad preparados para mucha emoción y alguna sorpresa.

Os centraréis en la presentación de ‘Dor’ o al ser vuestra primera visita a nuestro país, ¿habéis pensado en ejecutar algún set list especial a modo de repaso de vuestra trayectoria?

Tal y como acabo de comentar tenemos preparadas algunas sorpresas muy agradables para esta actuación y estoy seguro de que todos van a estar súper contentos con ellas. Pero no podemos revelar nada al respecto, preferimos…. pues eso, que sean sorpresa.

Vosotros actuaréis el viernes 7 de diciembre y compartiréis escenario con Aathma, Animatter, Forgotten Tomb, Shining y Solstafir. ¿Qué opinión tienes de esos grupos? ¿Os vais a quedar el fin de semana en Madrid para disfrutar del festival?

Todos estos grupos con los que compartiremos escenario son grupos respetados y, a título personal me gustan todos ellos. Algunos con una historia y trabajo de más años que otros en su música, eso sí. Pero tan solo puedo más que apreciar lo que ellos hacen.

Por otro lado y desafortunadamente volvemos a casa al día siguiente, pero seguro que pronto volveremos como espectadores.

Y antes de acabar con la entrevista toca la pregunta obligada que todos vuestros seguidores quieren saber: ¿qué tipo de merchandising llevaréis?

Pues habrá CD’s, camisetas y vinilos con ediciones limitadas. Siempre hacemos ediciones limitadas, aunque vamos a llevar mucha cantidad de todo (NDR – ¡preparad la cartera!)
