Enseño las cartas antes que sigas leyendo: tengo el honor de haber entrevistado a mis tres vocalistas noruegas preferidas de todos los tiempos: Liv Kristine, Kari Rueslatten y, ahora, a Vibeke Stene. Hace años lo intenté un par de veces, pero no pudo ser.
Veil of Secrets es la excusa para conversar con una mujer tan amable como encantadora y es que Vibeke se muestra muy receptiva para conversar sobre otras cuestiones ajenas a su nueva banda, como Tristania y su actividad teatral.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): ¿Cómo estáis Asgeir y tú? ¡Espero que estéis con salud!
VIBEKE STENE (VS): Estamos sanos y con salud, gracias. Disfrutamos de un invierno muy frío ya que la nieve aporta luz a esta oscura estación. El hielo en el agua y la nieve en los campos da muchas posibilidades para las actividades al aire libre y nos hace más llevaderos los confinamientos de la pandemia. Sin embargo, la mayoría del tiempo, lo pasamos dentro de casa, donde, entre otras cosas, nos metemos en nuestro estudio a trabajar en nuevo material para Veil of Secrets.

EM: Por fin ‘Dead poetry’ está a la venta ¿estás satisfecha con el resultado?
VS: Sí, Asgeir y yo hemos encontrado una vía común para expresarnos que amamos y queremos mantener. Hemos creado lo que nos gusta, lo que nos agrada, lo que queríamos y lo que necesitábamos y lo hemos hecho a través de un sonido orgánico que nos hace vibrar de una forma especial. Creo que ‘Dead poetry’ presenta composiciones completas y sólidas.

EM: ¿Por qué escogisteis Crime Records para lanzar el disco? Con el bagaje de Asgeir y el tuyo, ¿no hubo compañías grandes que quisieran editarlo o preferisteis un sello más pequeño para tener una relación más personal?
VS: Ninguna de las grandes discográficas mostraron interés por lo que encontramos muy buenas razones para fichar por Crime Records. La comunicación con ellos es muy buena.

EM: ¿Cómo te sientes cantando doom de nuevo?
VS: Nuestro doom está basado en las guitarras y es estricto con ello, pero también tiene un contraste melódico. Es oscuro, triste y melancólico, pero a veces hay una felicidad de ira, luz o esperanza. Solo utilizamos cuerdas y batería para hacer que la música sea pesada. Intentamos crear un efecto que chirríe un poco, que toque nuestras cuerdas internas. Este paisaje doom me permite expresar lo que es la música para mí y en mí. Es en el doom donde más me relajo y, por lo tanto, tengo mayor libertad para expresarme como deseo.

EM: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de composición? ¿Se encargó Asgeir de la música y tú de las letras?
VS: Cuando recibí el esqueleto de una canción por parte de Asgeir la estuve escuchando hasta que formó parte de mí y mientras la escuchaba hice mi propia construcción de la misma. Siempre pienso que mi trabajo debería completar las canciones. El estado de ánimo que me producen las canciones de Asgeir decide en gran medida qué melodías y estilo elijo combinado con la letra, por supuesto, y que encuentro relajante.

EM: ¿Por qué dejaste tu carrera musical en 2007, después que ‘Illumination’ viera la luz?
VS: Necesitaba descansar, tenía que acostumbrarme al silencio, a estar sola y no depender de otros y volver a mis raíces después de muchos años de exponerme.

EM: Creo que ‘Dead poetry’ suena como el doom metal de los años 90 ¿es ese el espíritu que queríais conseguir para este disco?
VS: Sí, creo que Asgeir estuvo influenciado por Candlemass a la hora de empezar a hacer doom antes que le propusiera hacer una colaboración con su material como base. También puedes encontrar esta relación en el artwork de ‘Dead Poetry’.

EM: Pienso que ‘Dead poetry’ mejora con cada escucha y que no es un disco fácil. Al menos esa ha sido mi experiencia con él ¿Estás de acuerdo conmigo?
VS: Gracias, me alegra oír eso. Es lo que queríamos, un producto que necesites escuchar una y otra vez.

EM: Creo que los momentos álgidos del disco con “Meson” y “Entirety” ¡qué forma de acabar el disco!
VS: Sí, ‘Entirety’ es una descripción sobre encontrar lo bueno y lo bueno que está por venir. En ambos casos, la música y la letra las hicimos cuando Asgeir y yo decidimos trabajar juntos y nos lleva a lo que hemos hecho después, como hemos trabajado y qué es importante para nosotros a la hora de crear música.

EM: Con la situación que estamos viviendo ahora mismo con el Covid-19 es muy difícil actuar, pero ¿os gustaría tocar en directo o sois una banda solo de estudio debido a vuestros múltiples compromisos? ¿Habrá opción de verso cuando todo esto lo permita?
VS: Transmitir en vivo y sentir los nervios que se crean en el escenario entre público y artista es algo esencial para un artista ¡Realmente espero que tengamos la oportunidad de presentarnos en directo como Veil of Secrets!

EM: ¿Os habéis planteado hacer algún concierto o evento en streaming para apoyar la salida del disco?
VS: No creo que un concierto en streaming pueda hacer mucho y me temo que no tendríamos el presupuesto necesario para llevar a cabo una producción lo suficientemente buena.

EM: ¿Tienen algo que ver God of Atheists y Veil of Secrets?
VS: No, God of Atheists y Veil of Secrets son dos proyectos separados. God of Atheists es el proyecto de Asgeir en el que yo soy una invitada.

EM: God of Atheists parece tener un elenco de colaboradores espectacular con Ihsahn, ICS Vortex, Trym y tú
VS: Sí, son unas colaboraciones fantásticas y espero que el proyecto de God of Atheists llegue a buen puerto.

EM: ¿Qué sucedió con Tristania?
VS: Quería volver a las raíces de Tristania, no siempre hambrienta de nuevas direcciones y experimentaciones. No siempre fue fácil trabajar sobre esa base y muchas veces hubo tenia la sensación que el material no estaba listo al entrar al estudio. Mayoritariamente interpretaba lo que otros componían por lo que a veces terminaba bastante estresada. Pero Tristania fue mi vida durante diez años. La banda era como mi familia y cada decisión que tomaba se debía a la banda. Cuando dejé la banda sentí como una revelación y me sentía asustada a la vez y la ira y la tristeza nunca estuvieron lejos la una de la otra y eso me duró muchos años. Pero nunca me he arrepentido de mi elección, siempre he estado orgullosa de mi fuerte voluntad y de mi poder para llevar a cabo mis decisiones.
Recuerdo la sensación del día que supe que había pasado a la historia el miedo y la ira que sentía ¡qué alivio! Me sentí en paz. Le deseo lo mejor a todos mis ex compañeros de banda.

EM: Creo que has hecho apariciones importantes en el teatro en los últimos años en obras como ‘Skammes Gissel’ (2015) y un monólogo en 2018 ¿Puedes hablarme de ello? ¿Sigues actuando en teatros?
VS: He participado en cuatro obras de teatro y si vuelvo a tener la oportunidad de volver al teatro, lo haré. Adoro actuar y trabajar en el teatro. Es otra forma de actuar y tu cuerpo y tu voz son tu instrumento.
En tres de esas obras he colaborado con el mismo guionista, Kai Erland, un amigo mio de mi barrio. Primero me interesé mucho en una historia que me contó sobre una mujer que se enamoró de un soldado alemán aquí, donde vivimos, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Tras la guerra ella fue castigada por los lugareños, le cortaron el pelo y dejó a su hijo pequeño entre la multitud. Cuando ella volvió a nuestra pequeña ciudad natal vivió el resto de su vida traumatizada, avergonzada y encerrada en su casa.
Me sentí fascinada por Erland pues colocó una ventana en medio de su sala de estar para mirar a través de ella mientras escribía la historia. Llevamos la ventana al escenario como apoyo principal de esta claustrofóbica obra.
En otra obra de Erland retratamos el abuso sexual infantil y en ‘Kvinnemonologene’ de Stine Sandnes hice un monólogo de una chica gótica. ‘Kvinnemonologene’ es una obra compuesta por varios monólogos basados en entrevistas de Sandnes con mujeres. Los monólogos abordan diferentes aspectos de la condición femenina en la Noruega de hoy día y se presentan para que la gente reflexione sobre la realidad de los demás.

EM: Hace unos años Liv Kristine + Kari Rueslatten + Anneke Van Giersbergen hicieron una gira especial conjunta bajo el nombre de The Sirens ¿te gustaría formar parte de una reunión de este tipo con las vocalistas originarias del Gothic / Doom con algunas de ellas?
VS: Honestamente no lo sé. Dependería de las bases musicales.

EM: ¿Quieres añadir algo más para vuestros fans en todo el mundo?
VS: Realmente espero que todos estéis sanos y a salvo con vuestras familias, que compartáis el tiempo con la gente que amáis, que os atreváis y seáis capaces de defender vuestros derechos y que tengáis la oportunidad de cumplir vuestros sueños.
Espero que podáis escuchar ‘Dead poetry’ una y otra vez y que, de alguna forma, os conmueva, que podamos vernos en un concierto en el futuro y que podamos hacer más música en los próximos años.

Let me show all my cards before you continue reading: I had the honour of interviewing three of my preferred Norwegian female vocalists of all time: Liv Kristine, Kari Rueslatten and, now, Vibeke Stene. I tried to do it twice, years ago, but it couldn’t happen.
Veil of Secrets is the perfect excuse to talk to a woman as kind as charming, and she’s that so, that Vibeke is very receptive to discussing other matters oblivious to his new band, such as Tristania and her activity in the theatre.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): How are Asgeir and you? Are you sane and safe from the Covid-19?
VIBEKE STENE (VS): We are safe and healthy, thank you. We enjoy a very cold winter as the snow brings light to this dark season. Ice on the waters and snow in the fields gives lots of possibilities for outdoor activities that makes us get through the restrictions due to the pandemic, a lot easier. Most time is spent indoors though, where we among other things rig in our studio to work with new material for Veil of Secrets.

EM: Now ‘Dead poetry is finally available. Are you satisfied with the reasult?
VS: Yes, me and Asgeir found a common expression we both love and want to keep. We created what we like, what pleases us, what we wanted and what we needed and stuck to the organic sound that makes that special vibration to us. I think Dead Poetry presents thorough and solid compositions.

EM: DoesI God of Atheists to Veil of Secrets have something to do with it?
VS: No. God of Atheists and Veil of Secrets are two separate projects. God of Atheists is Asgeir’s project which I guests.

EM: Firstly God of Atheists seems to had some great collaborators as Ihsahn, ICS Vortex and Trym. What happened with these guest appearences?
VS: Yes, it’s a nice bouquet of good and profiled musicians to God of Atheists. I wish for the project to get in port.

EM: Why did you choose Crime Records to release the album? With Asgeir background and your own, no biggest labels were interested in your project or maybe you wanted amore personal relation with the label?
VS: When none of the major labels showed their interest in our production, we found very good reasons for a cooperation with Crime Records. We communicate very well.

EM: What and how did you feel singing Doom Metal again?
VS: Our doom is guitarbased and strict but with a melodious contrast. It’s dark, sad and melancholic, but sometimes there’s a bliss of anger, light or even hope. We only use strings and drums and it gives the music it’s heaviness. We try to create an effect that crunch a little, that touches our inner strings. This doomed landscape allows me to express what music is to me and in me. It’s in the doom I relax the most and therefore have the most freedom to express myself as I wish.

EM: How was the composition process? Did Asgeir all the music and you wrote all the lyrics?
VS: When I got skeletons for a song from Asgeir, I listened until the music had become a part of me and while listening I formed a construction of the song. I always think my work should complete the songs. The mood Asgeir’s compositions set me in pretty much decides which melodies and style I choose, combined with the lyrics of course, that I find soothing.

EM: Why did you left your musical career back in 2007 after ‘Illumination’ saw the light?
VS: Well, I needed to rest, had to get used to silence, to be alone and not dependent on others and find back to my roots after many years of exposure.

EM: I think ‘Dead poetry’ sounds like Doom Metal in the 90’s. Is this the spirit you wanted for your album?
VS: Yes, I think Asgeir was influenced by Candlemass to make his doom before I proposed to him for a collaboration with his material as a basis. You can also find the link to this early doom when you look to the artwork of Dead Poetry.

EM: I think ‘Dead poetry’ is better every time you listen the album. Maybe is not an easy album, at least for me. Are you agree with me?
VS: Thank you, I’m glad. We wanted this; a product you need to listen to again and again.

EM: I think the best part of the album are “Meson” and “Entirety”! What an amazing way to close the album!!!
VS: Yes, Entirety is a depiction of finding good and what good to come. Both the music and the lyrics were made when me and Asgeir had decided to work together and it’s pointing forward to what comes next, how we work and what’s important to us in creating music.

EM: Now with Covid situation is really difficult to tour but would you like to do it? Would be any chance to meet you on stage when Covid alarm goes away?
VS: It is an essential part of being an artist, to convey live and feel the nerve that’s created on stage and between the artist and the audience. I really hope we get the chance to take VoS live!

EM: Is there any chance to play any stream concert to support the release of the album?
VS: I don’t think a stream concert could hit the nerve and I’m afraid we wouldn’t have the budget to arrange a production good enough.

EM: What happened with Tristania? Why did you left the band?
VS: I wanted to go back to Tristanias roots, not always hunger for new directions and experimentation. It was not always easy to cooperate on such a basis and not seldom there was an aspect of unprepared material when entering the studio. I mostly interpreted what others had composed, and so it ended up pretty stressful sometimes.
But Tristania was my life for ten years. The band was sort of my family and every choice of direction I had been taken, was due to the band. So when I left the band I was both revealed and afraid, and anger and sadness was never far away for many years. But I never regret my choice, I’ve always been proud of my strong will and my power to implement what I’ve decided.
I remember the feeling the day I knew that time of fear and anger had passed. What a relief! It felt so peaceful. I wish all my former band mates all the very best.

EM: I think you did important apparitions in the theatre last years as ‘Skammes Gissel’ (2015) and you did a monologue (2018). What can you tell me? Are you still playing in theaters?
VS: I have participated in four plays and if I get the chance to work in the theatre again, I will do so. I love to act and work in the theatre. It’s another way to play your body and voice as an instrument.
In three of the plays I’ve collaborated with the same screenwriter, Kai Erland, a friend of mine from my neighborhood. I first got very interested in a story he told me about a woman who fell in love with a german soldier here where we live, during the second world war. After the war she was punished by the locals and her hair was cut off and she left her young son to escape the mob. When she returned to our little hometown she lived the rest of her life with these traumas, in shame, locked in her house. I got fascinated by Erland who had placed a window in the middle of his living room, where he wrote down the story while looking through this window. We brought it to stage as the central prop to this claustrophobic play.
In another play by Erland, we portrayed the topic of child sexual abuse and in Kvinnemonologene by Stine Sandnes I did the monologue of a gothic girl. Kvinnemonologene is a play put together by several monologues based on Sandnes interviews with women. The monologues address different aspects of being a woman in today’s Norway, put up to make people reflect on the reality of others.

EM: A few years ago Liv Kristine + Kari Rueslatten + Anneke Van Giersbergen did a special tour together. Would you like to be part of a reunion like this one as a originators of a scene with some of these ladys?
VS: I honestly do not know. It would depend on the musical basis.

EM: Do you want to add something for your fans all over the world?
VS: I really hope that you stay safe and healthy, that you share your time with someone you love, that you dare and are able to stand up for your rights and that you get the chance to fulfill your dreams. I hope that you’re able to listen to Dead Poetry again and again and that it somehow touches you, that I may see you at a concert in the future and I hope I can bring you more music in the years to come.
