Kari Rueslatten is an special artist. Her delicate image becomes endorsed by a soft, sweet and wonderful voice. I must admit I’m completely biased with her. Since her return to music back in 2013, her career as an acoustic folk composer hasn’t stop growing with sensitive crafts such as her last album ‘Sørgekåpe’, where she displays her best artwork skills. I was blessed enough to interview her in 2014, it resulted to be the first Spanish media interview to talk about her return to music. But now, six years later, after getting to meet her in person, Kari and me are gathering again to talk about her new work and several aspects of her musical career.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): Don’t you think press feedback about ‘Sorgekape’ is being really positive?
KARI RUESLATTEN (KR): Yes, thank you – it is so wonderful, the feedback has been really positive!

EM: We haven’t listened to you singing in Norwegian since ‘Spindelsinn’. What drives
you to do it now?
KR: When I started to develop the material for Sørgekåpe, I quickly realized that it was going to be more personal lyric-wise, and music-wise moving in a more acoustic direction. Melody-wise I was leaning more towards ethnic tradition of Norwegian folk music. I felt it became more natural to sing in my native language.

EM: In my opinion ‘Sorgekape’ is more varied than previous albums. It sounds folkie but with more different rhythms than ‘Silence is the only pure sound’ or ‘Time to tell’.
Would you agree with me on that?
KR: Yes, in many ways I agree with you. Sørgekåpe takes a step out from the previous albums in some ways.

EM: When I listen “Sorgekape” song your voice reminds me to Doro Pesch, but I’m sure
it’s a pure coincidence only in my head… Would you say she has been a musical influence to you?
KR: Did you know Doro Pesch was a big idol for me in my youth, so I quite like that comparison!

EM: Regarding the shows/tour for ‘Sorgekape’, will there be any chance to see you on
the road?
KR: We were just in the middle of booking a tour when the break-out of the corona virus hit us. We have booked a few shows in November in Germany, so hopefully things will be more open across borders by then. In the meantime we will communicate and play live online, and that is quite nice too!

EM: I would like to ask you about your concert supporting Green Carnation 30 year
anniversary. What could you tell me about it? Would you sing with them again?
KR: It was really nice of them to ask me to sing on their big happening! I am so looking forward to it. The plan for now is that I will do a solo-set in the beginning of the show. So no plan of singing together.

EM: We could agree that most of your fans are Metalheads. Do you think that is good for you, it’s rare or natural?
KR: I think in many ways it is natural. I started my career playing in a prog-metal band. My time playing in metal bands shaped in many ways my path from there on.

EM: You seem to be totally focused on developing your career into acoustic folk music,
but how important were Metal and Electronic music for you, in the past? What did you learn about both genres?
KR: It was very important., it has clearly shaped who I am as an artist. I like to think that my metal-past somehow shines trough in the melancholy of my solo-material, and maby also in some of the song structures. Musically I have always felt like a free spirit, and always created albums that I would like to listen to myself, regardless of genre.

EM: Last week on your Facebook live “Behind the songs” you said that, maybe in the
future, there could be a chance of reunion for The 3rd and the Mortal. Are you in contact with the other guys? Have you been talking about it?
KR: We are not in contact often, but we do occasionally find that our paths crosses, and that is always very nice. We have no plans for reunion for now, but who can tell what the future will bring.

EM: What do you feel singing The 3rd and the Mortal songs?
KR: I feel good when I sing The 3rd and the Mortal songs. The songs are a huge and important part of my history. It brings back really good memories.

EM: I was at Divan Du Monde in Paris attending The Sirens show in 2014. That was the
concert of my life and a dream come true seeing you on stage and getting to know you at backstage. What do you remember about that tour? Would there be any chance of having a second part of The Sirens?
KR: That is wonderful to hear, it was a great night in Paris! From the tour I remember the good laughs we had together, and the proud feeling I had sharing stage with such talented singers. We have no plans to do a second part for now, but it was a great experience performing with Anneke and Liv, and the excellent musicians too, so it would be nice to do it again at one time.

EM: In your opinion, what are the most special moments of your musical career?
KR: I think that would have to be the comeback in 2013 after my long break. It was such a warm welcome back. I was for many years not sure if I would come back to music, being that long away from it all, if everyone had forgotten about me. So that was really awesome.

EM: You are usually very active during Record Store Day. Why do you think RSD is an
important date?
KR: I very much appreciate the physical music products, like vinyl and CD, and that is some of the things that is still being cherished in the independent record shops. I like to listen to music while looking in the booklet, the lyrics – everything about it the physical product really. So that we across the world share an annual day that celebrate the independent record shops is something I really support.

EM: What would a normal day in your life be like?
KR: A normal day in my life right now is really something I never thought coming – like most of us! So for a long time now, and probably some time to come too, I try to mix being a teacher for my two children at home school with everything else, and keeping the spirits up in the household. I do enjoy getting to spend so much time with those who are closest to me, but I am also looking forward to everything around us opening up eventually.

EM: Do you think that Covid-19 would change music industry and the way we (music
lovers) enjoy/consume music?
KR: I certainly think it has opened many people’s eyes to how we can enjoy streaming and online concerts. Hopefully that is something that we can keep on doing also when countries and borders are opening up again. I think the creativity and open-mindedness we see now from both artists and audience will be something we bring along also when things go back to normality again.

En 2013 regresó al mundo de la música y su carrera folk acústico no deja de crecer con trabajos tan sensibles como ‘Sørgekåpe’ en el que desplega sus mejores artes. En 2014, tuve la fortuna de hacerle la primera entrevista sobre su regreso para un medio español. Ahora, seis años después y habiéndola conocido en persona, vuelvo a sentarme con Kari para charlar de su nuevo trabajo y de muchos otros aspectos de su carrera.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): Parece que la respuesta de la prensa a ‘Sørgekåpe’ está siendo muy positiva.
KARI RUESLATTEN (KR): Sí, ¡gracias! Es maravilloso ver que las primeras respuestas están siendo tan positivas.

EM: Desde que grabaste ‘Spindelsinn’ que no habías vuelto a cantar en noruego en un disco y de eso hace ya mucho ¿por qué ahora?
KR: Cuando empecé a componer el material de ‘Sørgekåpe’ me di cuenta rápidamente que tanto la música como las letras iban a ser más personales moviéndome dentro del terreno acústico. En cuanto a la melodía me movía más hacia la tradición étnica del folk noruego. Sentía que era más natural cantar en mi lengua nativa.

EM: Creo que ‘Sørgekåpe’ es más variado que tus tres discos anteriores. Sí, es un disco muy folk pero al mismo tiempo tiene diferentes ritmos que ‘Silence is the only pure sound’ o ‘Time to tell’ ¿Estás de acuerdo conmigo?
KR: Sí, estoy de acuerdo contigo en muchas cosas. De alguna forma creo que ‘Sørgekåpe’ se aleja de mis discos anteriores.

EM: Igual te ríes cuando te comente esto pero cuando escucho la canción “Sørgekåpe”, que abre el disco, tu voz me recuerda a la de Doro Pesch cuando canta algunas baladas. Estoy seguro que es pura coincidencia, pero te lo quería decir…
KR: ¿Sabías que Doro Pesch fue una gran influencia para mí en mi juventud? Así que ¡me gusta esta comparación!

EM: ¿Qué hay de los conciertos para presentar ‘Sørgekåpe’? ¿Va a haber opciones de verte en directo?
KR: Justo estábamos organizando una gira cuando llegó el Coronavirus y nos golpeó. Tenemos cerrados algunos conciertos en Alemania para el mes de noviembre por lo que espero que para entonces las cosas hayan mejorado y se hayan abierto las fronteras. Mientras tanto nos comunicamos y actuamos online que también está bien.

EM: Lo que sí está cerrado y ya es público y oficial es tu actuación en el 30 aniversario de Green Carnation ¿Qué me puedes explicar sobre ello? ¿Cantarás con ellos también o solo serás su artista invitada junto a Tiamat?
KR: ¡Fue fantástico cuando me preguntaron si quería cantar en su gran evento! Estoy deseando que llegue el día. De momento lo que hay previsto es que yo haga mi actuación en solitario al principio del espectáculo y por el momento no hay planes de cantar juntos.

EM: Seguramente la mayoría de tus fans proceden del Metal ¿crees que es bueno, malo o es algo natural?
KR: Creo que por muchos motivos es algo natural porque empecé mi carrera tocando en una banda de prog metal. Todo el tiempo que estuve tocando en bandas de metal moldeó de muchas formas mi camino para llegar hasta aquí.

EM: Ahora estás totalmente centrada en desarrollar tu carrera dentro del folk acústico pero ¿cuán importante ha sido para ti y qué has aprendido de la electrónica y el metal?
KR: Ambas han sido muy importantes. Claramente, todo ello ha ido moldeándome como artista. Me gusta pensar que mi pasado en el metal brilla de alguna forma en la melancolía de mi material en solitario y quizá también en las estructuras de algunas canciones. Musicalmente siempre me he sentido un espíritu libre y siempre he creado discos que me gustaría escuchar, independientemente del estilo.

EM: Hace unos días hiciste un facebook live titulado ‘Behind the songs’ donde comentaste que quizá, en el futuro, habría alguna opción de reunir a The 3rd and the Mortal ¿estás en contacto con los otros chicos? ¿habéis hablado de ello?
KR: No estamos en contacto muy frecuente pero ocasionalmente nuestros caminos se Cruzan y siempre resulta muy agradable. No tenemos planes de reunión por ahora pero quién sabe lo que nos deparará el futuro.

EM: ¿Cómo te sientes cantando las canciones de The 3rd and the Mortal?
KR: Me siento bien cuando canto las canciones de The 3rd and the Mortal. Esas canciones son una parte enorme y muy importante de mi historia y me traen recuerdos realmente buenos.

EM: Estuve en Divan Du Monde de Paris en el concierto que The Sirens disteis en 2014 y te confieso que ha sido el concierto de mi vida y fue como un sueño poder veros juntas en el escenario tras tantos años y poder estar en el backstage con todas vosotras ¿Qué recuerdas de esa gira? ¿Hay alguna posibilidad de hacer una segunda parte de The Sirens?
KR: ¡Es maravilloso escucharte eso porque Paris fue una gran noche! De la gira recuerdo las buenas risas que tuvimos juntas y el orgullo que sentí al poder compartir escenario con cantantes con tanto talento. Por ahora no hay planes para hacer una segunda parte de esa reunión pero fue una gran experiencia actuar con Anneke y Liv y con unos excelente músicos también. Sería genial volver a hacerlo de nuevo.

EM: En tu opinión ¿Qué momentos han sido los más importantes de tu carrera?
KR: Creo que el más importante sería mi regreso en 2013 después de un largo parón. Recibí una cálida bienvenida. Durante muchos años no estuve segura de si volvería a la música estando tan lejos de todo, si todo el mundo se hubiera olvidado de mí. Fue realmente asombroso.

EM: Eres una artista muy active durante el Record Store Day ¿por qué es un evento tan importante para ti?
KR: Valoro mucho la música física como el vinilo o el cd y esas son algunas de las cosas que todavía se aprecian en las tiendas de discos independientes. Me gusta escuchar música mientras leo el libreto o las letras, en realidad todo lo que comporta el formato físico. Realmente apoyo que se celebre un día al año el apoyo a las tiendas de discos independientes.

EM: ¿Cómo es un día normal en tu vida?
KR: Ahora mismo un día normal en mi vida es algo que nunca pensé que llegaría, ¡como la mayoría de nosotros! Desde hace ya un tiempo, y lo que queda por venir, trato de ser una profesora de escuela para mis dos hijos en casa con todo lo demás, y mantener el ánimo del hogar. Disfruto mucho de pasar todo el tiempo que puedo con la gente que me rodea pero también espero que todo lo que nos rodea abra con el tiempo.

EM: ¿Crees que el Covid-19 cambiará la industria de la música y la forma en que los usuarios consumimos música?
KR: Ciertamente creo que ha abierto los ojos de muchas personas sobre como podemos disfrutar del streaming y de los conciertos online. Espero que esto sea algo que podamos seguir haciendo también cuando los países y las fronteras se reabran de nuevo. Creo que la creatividad y la mentalidad abierta que vemos ahora tanto en los artistas como en el público sean algo que mantengamos cuando todo vuelva a la normalidad.
