2021 is going to be quite a year for Liv Kristine, the year of her takeoff. In addition to her busy career as a solo artist, she’s experiencing a growing activity with Coldbound, a band she shares with Pauli Souka and Meiju. They have been working on a double album. It contains the secret promise of shaking the nineties'; Gothic/Doom sound, with songs like “Slumber of decay” and with a huge number of collaborations —counting up to 43 up until now. One could say the project doesn’t lack ambition. We take a sit with Liv to discuss all of it while her new EP is calling the door.

EM: What a shitty 2020!!! How are you, Mikkel and Leon? Hope you all are doing well!
LK: My dear friend Marc, we are all sound and safe. Due tue the fact that we were forced to stay at home during lock-down periods there was more time to rethink many issues in life or how to clear my mind, moreover, to get started with my online vocal couching (www.karmasonic.net). I have used the time to consider how I can expand and progress on my true authentic way, on my creative goals and growth. I also saw the necessity to separate from toxic surroundings and situations. Well, I was a bit sad that the annual show in Nagold, Germany, was cancelled, but nothing happens in vain – it was actually my son’s birthday so we had a really lovely time staying and celebrating just with the family at home. The silence in December 2020 during Christmas felt a bit strange for most people, I guess, but I was around New Year pretty exhausted through the whole situation, I have to confess. I am working with children within the autistic spectre, moreover, at different schools and the whole situation was quite difficult to handle. But I do have good news: I just confirmed Nagold for December 2021! And the main thing is – we are all safe and healthy.

EM: Is your wedding affected by the Covid-19, too?
LK: Yes, it has been postponed 3 times. We are patiently waiting for a new date. Everything will turn out fine. Moreover, my traditional dress, which I will wear for our ceremony, got lost for a period of 6 months by the German post. It was found by Norwegian parcel service somewhere at the other side of Germany and arrived here 2 weeks ago. So then, I guess it’s time to marry. We must see things in a positive perspective. That is the only way to catch the light when times are dark.

EM: What are the plans for Coldbound? When are we having new music?
LK: Concerning our future musical releases, we have a double album at the moment and we are working very intensively on balancing everything, creating a beautiful story to be told, wrapped in in beautiful tones and a unique musical sphere. „Slumber f Decay“ was released in February, and we are thinking to release another single, maybe. The album will be released in 2021.

EM: I think Pauli had all the album completed but he is re-writing some line vocals because you are in the band. Is it correct? If yes, how do you work in this process?
LK: All three of us are momentarily sitting down, paying a lot of attention to each composition to see how we can optimize the sound even more, finding the perfect frequency for all three of us. Meiju brings in the sounds of the ethnic universe, I bring in my individual voice to Pauli’s compositions. It’s a beautiful way to work. Highly passionate and authentic. We are not in a hurry.

EM: I think I read about 43 contributors to the album? Can you share with me some of the new names involved?
LK: Pauli has gathered a miscellany of other female singers for the album. To name a few: Anette Guldbrandsen, Madeleine Eleine Liljestam (Eleine), Lindsay Schoolcraft (Antiqva), Laura Guldemond (Burning Witches), Cecilia Kamf (Lómënár), Nicole Willerton (Blood Crush), Nienke Verboom (Ayreon) and Nele Messerschmidt (Elvellon). And that’s not even the complete list of all (male and female) singers. The composing process is quite long and intensive. The composing of the album started way back in 2018, already before we became a three-piece musical project. To incorporate such voices into the music is done based on the needs of the storyline. Going into the concept, Pauli let each person create also a figurative character into this story, next to the instrumental or vocal contribution.

EM: “Slumber of decay” sounds like a true Gothic / Doom highlight. I was felt in love with it since the very first time I listen to it. What are your feelings while you’re singing this song?
LK: Thank you so much. It is perfect for me. It feels like coming home. Pauli let me re-write the lyrics to fit my melody lines and as my vocals were finished in the studio, I told Michael and Pauli that it feels like singing on a song that was made for me. It’s such a beautiful and powerful composition and I kept thinking «what if Pauli’s got more of that brilliant music“… Pauli must have sensed it as he asked me to join Coldbound later that year, which I did, feeling really safe and free with my decision. It is a very uplifting and magic piece of music that Pauli created.

EM: What do it feel like being part of a full band, again?
LK: I am feeling blessed at this moment. Coldbound is a blessing, I have to say. Pauli and Meiju are wonderful, like a soul family, there’s a deep understanding and passion between us. Our first single „Slumber of Decay“ was out 5th February and this is a special day for Meiju, Pauli and me…maybe especially important for me for many reasons. I got involved with Coldbound in 2020, about a years ago. Pauli, who is a really good friend of my fiancé, Michael (Allegro Talent Music), sent him that one track, asking if I might consider being a duet part of it. I have to say that I was impressed, instantly. I felt like travelling back in the times of Theatre of Tragedy.

EM: Have you signed a contract with any label? If yes, could you tell me which one and what are the reasons why you chose this option? If not, what are the changes to release the album with Allegro Talent?
LK: I did not sign to any major label. I actually dropped the idea early 2019. I just didn’t feel it was what I was looking for. I have been there many times, experienced how big money makes the ego big. If you are not aware of this, music business is a really dangerous place to be where authenticity so often gets lost. I decided to work and release my EP and future full-length album with Allegro Talent Media, an independent label, which cares for and supports a handful of artists. To be honest, today I feel absolutely in alignment with the artistic work I am doing, the artist I am and what I am giving to my audience. I feel much safer and stronger today because I chose to present my art independently and my career is all in my hands. I seek advice with just a few people and the responsibility is in my hands. My fiancé, Michael, and his label Allegro Talent Media is my backup and best advisor. My expression has won strength in so many ways: I feel so blessed with my family, my son and Michael and our two dogs, with our lovely home, my daily job with autistic children, my vocal coaching teaching, my upcoming releases with Coldbound and Liv Kristine. All in all it is the audience I thank from the innermost of my creative heart because you give me the artistic freedom to be creative in this lifetime and universe.

EM: I think the new Coldbound album will be a 2CD one, and that 4 video clips will be released with it. Could you give me some more details about your plans?
LK: A double album is already 90% finished, but we still have to decide in which form we will release the songs. As mentioned above, we are momentarily going through every composition carefully to fullfill and optimize the concept and release.

EM: It has come to me that ICS Vortex is going to contribute to the new Coldbound album. What does mean for you to sing with him? In my opinion he has a unique clean voice!
LK: I can only say that I agree. A great contribution. What a voice.

EM: What can we expect from Coldbound in terms of live activity?
LK: We firstly have to see how the live opportunities for bands and artists now evolve or solve. We will play live, that’s for sure and we will gather a live band as soon as there is a chance to perform again.

EM: Is there any chance we can see you singing with Coldbound and as solo artist the same night in Nagold? I’m thinking in something similar to what you did with Atrocity and Leaves’ Eyes in the old days.
LK: I would prefer keeping the two separately as two headliner shows in one night would be quite stressful. But sure, it would be lovely to have Coldbound in Nagold, as one year with the Sirens.

EM: Due to the pandemic situation, is there any chance to see you in a streamed concert, electric or acoustic, either for free or paid?
LK: I have been asked but it is impossible to rehearse right now. It’s quite a task, actually, for Coldbound and my solo. I just have to revise that we all must be patient. The positive thing is that we artists sell more music at the moment. My own new EP „Have Courage Dear Heart“ is selling really well, which I am so grateful for. Especially the vinyl edition seems to be wanted by my friends and fans and followers. My first time on vinyl!

EM: Could we expect from you other contributions to different bands? Or you’d rather concentrate all your efforts in Coldbound and your solo career for now?
LK: I have been recording vocals for a few other lovely projects lately, however, I can’t reveal their names yet.

EM: What can you tell us about your singing lessons? Who are your best pupils and why?
LK: It has been a wonderful experience, really inspiring to connect with people from Scandinavia to Chile. It began with a few requests about singing lessons from a few singers who’d been following me for a while. I needed some time to settle my goals and strategy for the teaching, based on my own life-long experience, moreover, taking a holistic perspective. In February my new homepage www.karmasonic.net got online where you can learn more about my teachings and works. I have sensed that inner voice for years of serving others in the field of strengthening their inner and outer voice and there’s a deep passion behind these teachings. My favourite pupil is my youngest one, in first grade of primary school, a first-class talent.

EM: Could you share with us some of your wishes for 2021?
LK: Dear Marc, I hope that we will see each other again soon. Every day I send mantras to the universe that my dearest ones, my friends and fans, all of you are and will be safe. We must take care of our health and be good to each other. Compassion is the right frequency.

Entre manos tienen un doble trabajo que promete ajetrear el Gothic / Doom de sonido noventero con canciones como “Slumber of decay” y con un catálogo de colaboraciones que de momento va por 43. Ambición no les falta. Nos sentamos con Liv para charlar de todo ello mientras su nuevo EP llama a la puerta.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): ¡Vaya mierda de año 2020 que hemos tenido, Liv! ¿Cómo estáis Mikkel, Leon y tú? Espero que siga todo bien en casa?
LIV KRISTINE (LK): Mi querido amigo Marc, todos estamos bien. Como hemos estado encerrados en casa durante largos periodos por las restricciones, he podido volver a pensar en muchos problemas de la vida y me ha venido bien para clarificar mi mente y, también, para iniciar my coaching vocal online (www.karmasonic.net). He estados pensando en como expandirme y progresar en mi autentico camino, en mis metas creativas y en mi crecimiento. También vi la necesidad de separarme de entornos y situaciones tóxicas. Estuve un poco triste por la cancelación de mi concierto anual en Nagold pero nada sucede en vano y como ese día era el cumpleaños de mi hijo, lo pasamos muy bien quedándonos en casa y celebrándolo solo en familia. El silencio en diciembre y durante la navidad ha sido muy extraño para la mayoría de personas y tengo que confesarte que en año nuevo me sentía exhausta por toda esta situación.
A nivel laboral estoy trabajando con niños autistas y en varias escuelas y manejar toda esta situación pandémica ha sido bastante complicada. ¡Pero tengo buenas noticias, mi concierto para diciembre de 2021 en Nagold se acaba de confirmar! Eso sí, lo principal es que todos estemos sanos y seguros.

EM: ¿Tu boda también se ha visto afectada por el Covid-19?
LK: Sí, se ha pospuesto tres veces. Estamos esperando pacientemente una nueva fecha. Todo saldrá bien. Además el vestido tradicional que llevaré en la ceremonia estuvo perdido durante seis meses en el servicio de Correos de Alemania. El servicio de paquetería noruego lo encontró en algún sitio de la otra punta de Alemania hace dos semanas así que supongo que es hora de casarse. Tenemos que ser positivos, es la única forma de captar la luz en tiempos oscuros.

EM: ¿Cuál es la planificación de Coldbound? ¿Cuando tendremos más música nueva?
LK: En lo que respecta a próximos lanzamientos musicales puedo decirte que tenemos un doble álbum en estos momentos y estamos trabajando muy intensamente para cuadrarlo todo, estamos creando una bonita historia que contar envuelta en hermosos tonos y una esfera musical única. “Slumber of decay” salió en febrero y estamos pensando en, tal vez, lanzar un nuevo single. El disco verá la luz en diciembre de 2021.

EM: Creo que Pauli tenía todo el disco terminado pero que está re escribiendo algunas líneas vocales para adaptarlas a tu estilo ¿es eso cierto? Si es así ¿cómo estáis llevando a cabo este proceso?
LK: Los tres nos sentamos prestando especial atención a cada composición para ver como podemos optimizar aún más el sonido encontrando la frecuencia adecuada para los tres. Meiju trae los sonidos étnicos y yo llevo mi voz individual a las composiciones de Pauli. Es una hermosa forma de trabajar, muy apasionada y autentica. No tenemos prisa.

EM: Creo haber leído que van a haber ¡43 colaboradores en este disco! ¿Puedes adelantarme algunos nombres?
LK: Pauli ha reunido una buena mezcla de vocalistas femeninas para el disco. Por nombrar solo algunas: Anette Guldbrandsen, Madeleine Eleine Liljestam (Eleine), Lindsay Schoolcraft (Antiqva), Laura Guldemond (Burning Witches), Cecilia Kamf (Lómënár), Nicole Willerton (Blood Crush), Nienke Verboom (Ayreon) y Nele Messerschmidt (Elvellon). Y esa es solo una muestra de todos los vocalistas, hombres y mujeres, que habrá en el disco. El proceso de composición es bastante largo e intenso ya que empezó en 2018, antes incluso que nos convirtiéramos en trío. La incorporación de todas esas voces se realiza en función de las necesidades de la trama. Hablando del concepto, Pauli dejó que cada persona creara también un personaje figurado en la historia junto a su contribución instrumental o vocal.

EM: “Slumber of decay” me parece un highlight del Gothic / Doom y me enamoré de la canción desde la primera vez que la escuché ¿Qué sientes al cantarla?
LK: Muchas gracias. Es perfecta para mí. Es como volver a casa. Pauli me dejó reescribir la letra para que se ajustara a mis líneas vocales y cuando terminé de grabar le dije a Michael y Pauli que es como si la canción hubiera sido compuesta para mí. Se trata de una canción muy hermosa y con mucha fuerza y yo no dejaba de pensar “¿y si Pauli tuviera más música brillante como esta?”… Pauli debió sentir lo mismo cuando me pidió que me uniera a Coldbound más adelante y yo lo hice sintiéndome segura y libre con mi decisión. Pauli ha creado una pieza musical muy edificante y mágica.

EM: ¿Qué sientes al ser parte de una banda completa nuevamente?
LK: En estos momentos me siento bendecida. Coldbound es una bendición y debo decir que Pauli y Meiju son maravillosos, como una familia del alma con los que hay un profundo entendimiento y una gran pasión.
Nuestro primer single, “Slumber of decay”, vio la luz el 5 de febrero y ese es un día especial para Pauli, para Meiju y para mí… quizá especialmente importante para mí por varias razones. Entré en Coldbound en 2020, hace aproximadamente un año. Pauli, que es muy buen amigo de mi prometido Michael (Allegro Talent Music), le envió una canción preguntándole si podía considerar formar parte de ella en formato duo. Debo decir que quedé impresionada instantáneamente. Tenía ganas de retroceder a los tiempos de Theatre of Tragedy.

EM: Parece que el disco de Coldbound será doble y que publicareis cuatro video clips ¿puedes adelantarme más detalles al respecto?
LK: El disco doble está terminado al 90% pero aun tenemos que decidir en qué forma publicaremos las canciones. Como te decía antes, ahora estamos revisando todas las canciones cuidadosamente para completar y optimizar el concepto y el lanzamiento.

EM: ICS Vortex colaborará en el nuevo trabajo de Coldbound ¿Qué significa para ti cantar con alguien como Vortex? Creo que tiene una voz limpia única.
LK: Estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo, tiene una voz única, y será una gran colaboración ¡Qué voz!

EM: ¿Qué podemos esperar de la actividad en directo de Coldbound?
LK: Primero tenemos que ver las oportunidades de directo que hay para bandas y artistas y como se resuelve todo. Tocaremos en directo, eso seguro, y reuniremos una banda para actuar tan pronto como tengamos oportunidad de subirnos a un escenario.

EM: ¿Hay opciones de actuar con Coldbound y en solitario en Nagold la misma noche, como sucedía en los viejos tiempos con Atrocity y Leaves’ Eyes?
LK: Preferiría mantener separados ambos proyectos puesto que resultaría muy estresante hacer dos espectáculos como cabezas de cartel en una noche pero, claro, sería maravilloso tener a Coldbound en Nagold como ya pasó con The Sirens.

EM: Debido al Covid-19 hay opciones de hacer algún concierto en streaming, eléctrico o acústico, gratis o de pago?
LK: Me lo han preguntado pero es imposible ensayar ahora mismo. De hecho, es una gran tarea para Coldbound y para mi carrera en solitario. Ahora solo podemos ser pacientes y revisar algunas cosas. Lo positivo de esta situación es que los artistas vendemos más música en estos momentos. Mi nuevo EP ‘Have Courage Dear Heart’ se está vendiendo muy bien y estoy muy agradecida por ello. Especialmente la edición en vinilo parece que es muy deseada entre mis amigos, fans y seguidores ¡Mi primera vez en vinilo!

EM: ¿Podemos esperar más contribuciones tuyas con otras bandas o ahora prefieres centrar todos tus esfuerzos en Coldbound y tu carrera en solitario?
LK: He estado grabando voces para otros proyectos maravillosos últimamente pero todavía no puedo revelar nada.

EM: ¿Qué tal van tus clases de canto? ¿Quien es tu mejor alumno y porqué?
LK: Ha sido una experiencia maravillosa y realmente inspiradora poder conectarme con gente de todo el mundo, desde Escandinavia hasta Chile. Comenzó con algunas solicitudes sobre lecciones de canto de algunos cantantes que me habían estado siguiendo durante un tiempo. Necesitaba algo de tiempo para asentar mis metas y mi estrategia como profesora, basadas en mi propia dilatada experiencia y tomar una perspectiva holística.
En febrero inauguré mi nueva web www.karmasonic.net donde puedes aprender más sobre mis enseñanzas y mis trabajos. He sentido durante años esa voz interior de ayudar a otros a fortalecer su voz interior y exterior y hay una profunda pasión detrás de todas mis enseñanzas. Mi alumno favorito es el más joven, que está en primer curso de primaria, un talento de primera.

EM: Liv ¿qué deseos tienes para este 2021?
LK: Querido Marc, espero que podamos volver a vernos pronto. Todos los días envío mantras al universo para que mis seres queridos, mis amigos y mis fans estéis sanos y seguros. Debemos cuidar nuestra salud y ser bondadosos los unos con los otros. La compasión es la frecuencia adecuada.

Ayer se hizo público que Liv Kristine entra a formar parte de Coldbound como miembro permanente. Teníamos que respetar los tiempos de la información pero ¡te lo contamos todo!
La banda finlandesa afincada en Hudiksvall (Suecia) se formó en 2012 y desde entonces ha editado cuatro discos y dos EP’s con un sonido que ha ido evolucionando aunque teniendo como referente el death melódico.
Ahora en 2020 Pauli Souka ha decidido dar un giro a la banda y establecer una formación sólida que le permita crecer y donde destaca la presencia de Liv Kristine como vocalista y compositora. No es la única novedad pues la alineación queda de la siguiente forma:

Liv Kristine: Voz y composición (ex-Theatre Of Tragedy, ex-Leaves’ Eyes).
Markus Riihimäki: Kantele y composición (KanteleScapes).
Meiju Enho: Orquestaciones, teclados, voz y composición (Mythrian, Mamyth, Greenrose Faire, ex-Ensiferum).
Pauli Souka: Voz, guitarra, bajo, teclados, programación y composición.

Coldbound están preparando nuevo trabajo en un mar de novedades que incluyen un montón de artistas invitados entre los que se encuentran Nele Messerschmidt (Elvellon), Samuli Federley, Sakari Kukko (ex-Amorphis), Laura Guldemond (Burning Witches), Mathias «Vreth» Lillmåns (…And Oceans, Finntroll), Cecilia Kamf, Nicole Willerton, Nienke Verboom, Kaunis Kuolematon (Dawn of Solace, Black Sun Aeon) o Madeleine Eleine Liljestam (Eleine).

Sobre la aportación de Liv Kristine sabemos que ha escrito varios poemas, entre ellos algunos en noruego.

Pauli comenta sobre sus compañeros de banda lo siguiente:
Liv Kristine: La voz de mi adolescencia. Un verdadero ángel llegado a la tierra con un corazón de oro puro. Una amiga fantástica con quien comparto las mismas visiones. El equilibrio perfecto de todas mis frecuencias.

Markus Riihimäki: Una presencia ardiente. Un gran compositor y un profesional trabajador con una visión clara y cero señales de procrastinación cuando se trata de producción musical.
La persona que me llamará en cualquier momento para darme nuevas ideas y que quedarán en papel. El hermano que nunca tuve.

Meiju Enho: Si los bosques tuvieran un sonido, Meiju habría sido la directora. Una compositora extremadamente carismática con una gran habilidad para crear paisajes sonoros únicos.
La voz de la razón. ¡Una verdadera bendición estar con ella en el mismo proyecto musical! Con visiones y frecuencias perfectamente alineadas.

Anoche pude hablar con Liv Kristine sobre muchas cosas y entre ellas hablamos sobre su nueva banda y su nuevo EP en solitario.

Acerca de su próximo EP en solitario comentamos el retraso que ha sufrido su publicación pues debía ver la luz el 18 de diciembre en el concierto anual de Nagold.

Public Statement.
~22.10.2020 Hudiksvall, Sweden~

Since the birth of this project, 8 years ago, everything was uncertain. Expanding the project into a full band seemed so distant and yet again utopic; at least impossible.

As some of you have noticed lately, Coldbound is currently preparing a new work that has engaged a big amount of respectable guest appearances so far. Some of these guest appearances became real friends.
Friends that one can rely on, friends that one can express all the worries and wishes, friends that somehow appear in your life the right time.

Throughout the music, which we use a channel to transcript our dreams, hopes, fears and worries; we found the missing ingredient to form a musical quintessence. As melodies and ideas are flowing endlessly, we already start planning our future journey. The passport is already claimed.
One would ask; how? Well… There is recorded music from all of us that will be presented to you very soon in our new album.

Once the music was written and recorded, we start thinking and talking about it in the most realistic way possible. At the point that we all realised that this is as real as it gets. Eventually, it all became reality in the most unexpected and beautiful way.

While carving a new sound and a new approach, skilled people are required; no doubt. But what we got here is the vision that we all share. This is the vision that will lead our path. A very own creation of ours.

As our times face a dramatic swift and things around us change, so we also change; minute by minute, day by day. But changing towards a more complete entity, throughout all the hardships that we might face and through every single obstacle we succesfully pass, loosing ourselves, loosing our passion of what we love doing, would be an absolute devastation.
