Los que siguen mis trabajos con Liv Kristine saben que siempre promociono el concierto de Nagold con entrevistas y contenidos especiales y el motivo es muy sencillo: creo que Alte Seminarturnhalle es su escenario fetiche, el lugar donde pasan cosas en la carrera de Liv. Creo que Alte Seminarturnhalle es el escenario que articula la carrera de Liv Kristine en solitario, donde se encuentra con fans de todo el mundo, donde da rienda suelta a sus emociones y el lugar al que siempre vuelve.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): Liv, amiga mía, ¿cómo estás? ¿Qué tal va todo por Noruega?

LIV KRISTINE (LK): Todo va genial en casa, salvo que tengo Covid ¿cómo estás tu? Yo estoy muy bien, mi mujer y mis hijos están genial y en el trabajo todo se complica en estas fechas porque se acerca el final de año y tenemos mucho qué hacer. Pero en lo personal todo va estupendamente. Mira, quiero mostrarte algo (Liv empieza a mover su móvil y me enseña su casa y las maravillosas vistas que tiene a las montañas y a un fiordo, ndr.) Mira, bienvenido a Noruega, este es mi perro, y esta es mi casa, que la estamos reformando poco a poco. Es la casa de mi padre y tenemos mucho que renovar. Es una casa vieja, de 1958, pero es genial porque podemos hacer de ella nuestra casa. Michael está haciendo el baño y mira, esta es la cocina, y pronto Michael tendrá una habitación para su colección de vinilos WOW tienes una casa preciosa.

¡Hola Michael! ¿Como estás? MICHAEL HANSEN (MH): ¡Hola Marc! Todo bien por aquí. Te veo muy bien y detrás tuyo veo tu colección de vinilos Sí, justo detrás tengo mi colección de CD, vinilos, revistas y libros y cualquier cosa que tenga que ver con música. Esta es mi habitación para la música y mis hobbies. Afortunadamente tenemos un piso grande. Tienes suerte, yo espero tener pronto una habitación como la tuya pero de momento estamos tirando paredes. Debes tener una colección de vinilos realmente grande. Te confieso que de todo el contenedor que transportó nuestras cosas hasta Noruega, la mitad eran vinilos. Tengo cosas de los años 60 en adelante. Maravilloso.

EM: Liv, nos conocemos desde 1998, hemos hecho más de 25 entrevistas en estos años y esta es la primera vez que vamos a hacer una entrevista en video.

LK: Si tienes alguna pregunta para Michael también puedes hacerla. Aprovechando que estáis los dos juntos quiero preguntaros algo, más bien sugeriros, y es que cantéis juntos en directo “Pictured within” pues creo que habéis grabado una versión maravillosa y me encantaría escucharla en directo. Creo que será el próximo año, para este año ya no tenemos tiempo de ensayarla. Entonces me vais a hacer viajar de nuevo a Nagold para poder verla -como si fuera un sacrificio para mí, ndr. (risas)- (MH): Se trata de voces limpias y eso es más complicado que hacer guturales. En estudio suena genial pero en directo es más difícil. Entiendo. De todas formas, Liv, déjame decirte que, honestamente, creo que es una de las canciones más especiales de tu carrera. LK: Oooohhhh, ¡gracias! Pensaremos en ti cuando la preparemos.

EM: Empecemos con la entrevista propiamente dicha. Quiero preguntarte qué significa Nagold para ti, porque para mí significa encontrarme con muchos amigos que solo nos vemos allí, significa verte a ti y verte cantar, siento que es como la familia que se encuentra cada año justo antes de navidad; siento que el concierto de Nagold es cuando empieza la navidad y la atmósfera que se genera es realmente especial y única…

LK: Para mí es una forma de volver a casa y estar con todos vosotros. Y ahora, un par de semanas antes del concierto, recibo correos electrónicos y mensajes de mucha gente que me dice que viene a verme a Nagold. Además, siempre es un evento especial porque sé que tengo una entrevista contigo, que siempre promocionas este evento. Además, este año va a ser muy especial porque el 18 de diciembre mi hijo Leon cumple 22 años. Justo el día de su cumpleaños no podré celebrarlo con él porque vamos a estar en lugares diferentes, pero ha decidido venir a verme con todos sus amigos y Michael y yo estamos muy contentos porque la familia de Nagold lo va a ser más aun para mí. Entonces vamos a conocer a Leon, porque no recuerdo haberlo visto nunca en Alte Seinarturnhalle. Vino una de las primeras veces que actué allí. No teníamos niñera y lo llevamos pero se aburrió al ver a todas las personas que querían hablar con su madre mientras él quería estar en casa jugando con sus Lego. Este año me ha dicho que, de verdad, quería venir al concierto y eso es genial. Para Bjorn, mi batería, también va a ser especial porque tiene a su familia viviendo a muy pocos kilómetros de Nagold. Además, el equipo de Alte Seminarturnhalle siempre me ha ayudado y siempre ha sido como volver a casa, incluso en 2011 o 2012 cuando solo toqué ese concierto en un año y siempre han estado ahí apoyándome.

Otros años ha habido otros problemas como el Covid u otros años en que he tenido problemas personales, pero Nagold siempre ha estado ahí para mí. Por todas esas cosas siempre intento promocionar el concierto de Nagold, porque creo que es el escenario más especial e importante de tu carrera y donde, además, es una reunión con familiares y amigos. Mis mejores amigos que viven en esta zona vienen a verme y ya te conocen y muchas veces me preguntan por ti y me dicen que esperan verte en Nagold pero que te de recuerdos de su parte cuando hable contigo. Sé que has pasado noches en lugares muy fríos solo por estar en mis conciertos así que un gran ¡gracias para ti, Marc! Sí, podría escribir un libro con muchas anécdotas e historias de todos los viajes que he hecho para verte por muchos países, de hecho es algo en lo que llevo tiempo pensando.

EM: En 2024, tu concierto de Nagold tuvo lugar a finales de noviembre y Michael y tú quedasteis muy contentos por la respuesta del público, con el concierto, la venta de merchandising… ¿por qué vuelve a ser en diciembre este año? ¿quizá porque ahora vivís en Noruega y es más difícil cuadrar las fechas?

LK: Parece ser que había algún otro artista que quería actuar en noviembre, además de mí. De hecho, se confirmó el concierto para noviembre (puedo confirmar que estaba previsto que fuera el 29 de noviembre, ndr.). Hubo algún problema de comunicación y tuve que elegir otra fecha y esta era la única opción. Son cosas que pasan, pero para mí está bien porque volamos desde Noruega y justo después de Nagold empiezo mis vacaciones de navidad y Michael y yo nos quedaremos unos días en Stuttgart para pasar tiempo con amigos y, especialmente, con Leon e iremos al mercado de navidad que es realmente bonito. Luego volveremos a Stavanger. En noviembre no hubiéramos tenido la posibilidad de organizar así el viaje.

EM: El año pasado te acompañaron en el escenario Rocco Cogliati, que vino desde Italia para estar contigo, y Christian Rohr ¿vas a tener algún invitado especial este año? Te lo pregunto porque varias veces ha habido ex compañeros tuyos entre el público: el año pasado estuvo Chris Lukhaup (ex Leaves’ Eyes) y hace varios años hubo algún miembro de Midnattsol…

LK: Este año solo está mi marido Michael, que cantará más canciones que el año pasado. Teniendo en cuenta que actuamos justo antes de navidad es complicado que venga alguien porque todo el mundo está con sus familias. Me gustaría tener a Carmen conmigo pero este año no puede ser, quizá el año que viene… Desgraciadamente, en esta ocasión Rocco no puede venir pero el año que viene volverá. Definitivamente, todo hubiera sido más fácil si el concierto hubiera sido en noviembre, porque hay navidad en todas partes. Me encantaría volver a tener a Tara conmigo pero el precio de los vuelos es increíblemente alto. Tarde o temprano todos volverán pero este año habrán más canciones mías y con Michael. Diría que va a ser un concierto de navidad más oscuro.

EM: Ayer puse un post en Facebook y Tara me contestó y recordé cuando la vi actuando contigo.

LK: Es maravilloso saber que hay gente al otro lado del Atlántico apoyándonos. Hay mucha gente de América Latina que tiene una conexión especial contigo por tu relación con los clubs de fans de allí. La próxima semana se hará pública la gira latinoamericana del año que viene Esa era una de las preguntas que quería hacerte ¿puedes darnos detalles del recorrido que harás o las fechas? Puedo confirmarte que será a mediados de diciembre y entre los lugares que voy a visitar están Guatemala y Santiago de Chile… pronto podré anunciarlo todo (pueden cambiar cosas pero he visto el recorrido y el setlist de esa gira y va a ser un sueño para todos los fans de Theatre of Tragedy y Liv Kristine, ndr.). Además, ninguno de mis músicos ha estado nunca en América Latina y va a ser un sueño para ellos también. Además, quiero anunciarte que en septiembre de 2026 vamos a estar en el Brynerocken Festival, que se celebra muy cerca de la casa de Carmen, y la tendremos con nosotros en el escenario.

EM: Hace unos días publicaste la versión acústica de “Lotus” ¿por qué ahora? ¿Para apoyar el concierto de Nagold?

LK: “Lotus” es una canción que encaja con ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ y hemos estado esperando para ver si podíamos publicarla y utilizarla en alguna edición internacional del disco pero no fue posible así que ahora es como un pequeño regalo de navidad y vamos a tocarla en vivo en Nagold. La he visto en el setlist y me alegro de verla en el repertorio.

EM: Sé que Sascha y tú estáis trabajando ya en tu próximo disco ¿puedes contarme algo sobre él? ¿tienes alguna fecha tentativa de lanzamiento?

LK: Sí, en principio va a ser en abril de 2027 porque Metalville deja dos años entre disco y disco de un artista y creo que eso es bueno para mantener el flujo. Por ejemplo, entre ‘Vervain’ y ‘River of diamonds’ pasó demasiado tiempo, aunque también es cierto que fue una época personal muy complicada. Ahora estoy de vuelta y creo que podemos hacer esto cada dos años y además tengo a Sascha conmigo para apoyarme. En esta ocasión, hemos elegido once canciones, porque en el disco siempre tiene que haber once canciones porque es un número especial para mí, así que hemos elegido once demos de las muchas que teníamos. En julio estuve en casa de Sascha, en Karlsruhe y lo escuchamos todo juntos y decidimos las que queríamos incluir. Ahora Sascha está ajustando las canciones para conseguir un sonido sólido. Luego escribiré las letras, cuando terminemos las reformas de casa. Estas navidades tengo deberes musicales por hacer y para las letras tengo algunas ideas y tengo en mente la portada que quiero hacer (Liv me explica y me detalla cómo va a ser la portada del disco, el concepto y por qué, pero me pide que guarde el secreto, ndr.). Existen muchas energías que hacen fluir las cosas; por ejemplo, tú, como escritor, nunca pensaste, hace 10 o 12 años, o quizá dos años atrás, que escribirías textos tan brillantes; yo ahora tengo la sensación que, con Sascha, podemos hacer esto cada dos año. Ahora hemos escogido 11 canciones, porque el disco tiene que tener 11 canciones porque es un número especial para mí ¿Porqué es importante el número 11 para tí? Para mí, el 11 significa dualidad y equilibrio. Se compone de dos unos y eso representa el equilibrio, los nuevos comienzos y la conexión entre lo consciente y el subconsciente, o las energías masculinas y femeninas.

EM: En los últimos años has hecho varias colaboraciones con bandas como Luminis, Alexandrite o Mortemia ¿estás trabajando ahora mismo con algún artista para alguna colaboración?

LK: No, ahora mismo solo estoy renovando mi casa, esa es mi mayor contribución en estos momentos y estamos cortando árboles para el fuego a tierra que tenemos (risas). He estado 29 años fuera de mi ciudad y he aprendido tantas cosas… me encanta estar creando el hogar de Michael y mío, y de Leon, que tiene pasaporte noruego y, además, habla el dialecto de Stavanger, y de nuestro perro. Además, el 1 de agosto empecé en un nuevo trabajo y Noruega es tan diferente de Suiza y Alemania… y siempre hay cosas que aprender ¿Se puede decir que estás aprendiendo a vivir de nuevo en Stavanger? Sí, estoy aprendiendo a vivir de nuevo en Stavanger. Creo que me acabas de dar el titular de la entrevista, “Aprendiendo a vivir nuevo”. Podemos escribirlo como hicimos en el EP ‘Have courage dear heart’ en que pusimos la “E” entre paréntesis “Liv(e)” ¡Es perfecto! ¡Lo tenemos! ¡Es mágico! Somos un buen equipo ¡me siento muy, muy, muy bien trabajando contigo! ¡yo también!

EM: Quiero preguntarte por Metalville porque sé que estás muy cómoda trabajando con ellos y además están haciendo un gran trabajo promocionando tus discos; por ejemplo, en España no había anuncios de tus discos en medios impresos desde los días de Napalm Records.

LK: Estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo, son muy importantes para mí. Lo que realmente me gusta de Metalville es que si les llamamos, nos cogen el teléfono directamente y hablamos todo de una forma muy directa. Además, vienen a nuestros conciertos y eso es genial y les estamos muy agradecidos. Además, siempre muestran mucha gratitud hacia nosotros. Estamos en la misma frecuencia y es una frecuencia segura para trabajar, para ellos y para nosotros. Uno de los idiomas que hablamos Michael y yo es el alemán y es el idioma de Metalville también y la lengua materna es la mejor para hacer negocios y además son muy familiares. No es un gran sello enorme que cuando llamas nunca encuentras a nadie y cuando te devuelven la llamada no conoces a esa persona. Yo no necesito que me llame gente, necesito que me llamen personas.

EM: ¿Tienes más fechas europeas para 2026?

LK: Hay fechas confirmadas en Polonia y Alemania y estamos hablando con el festival Under the Doom para 2026. Haciendo Polonia y Alemania vamos a intentar hacer una pequeña gira.

EM: Quiero preguntarte por Midnattsol ¿hay planes para un próximo disco o para actuar en directo?

LK: Me gustaría pero todos tenemos familias y miembros que se casan y tenemos hijos así que no es fácil. Me gustaría que Carmen me acompañara siempre en el escenario y ahora que sus hijos se hacen mayores, quizá sea posible. En el Brynerocken Festival de septiembre en Noruega vamos a cantar juntas varias canciones de Midnattsol y eso será genial. Además, los chicos de Midnattsol están de acuerdo con ello. La banda está parada ahora mismo pero me encantan esas canciones y quiero cantarlas con Carmen.

EM: Seguro que sabes cual es la última pregunta que quiero hacerte, pero no puedo resistirme a ello ¿qué hay de Theatre of Tragedy? El año pasado anunciaron su reunión The Gathering y The 3rd and the Mortal y solo faltáis vosotros para completar el trío de bandas clásicas… Hace unos meses estuve hablando con Hein sobre ello y me dijo que lo había comentado con Raymond pero que no estaba interesado…

LK: Exacto, Raymond dice no y para hacerlo necesitamos estar todos juntos. Entiendo su situación personal y privada y su familia ha cambiado sus prioridades porque ahora es padre. Lo entiendo completamente. Estuvimos ensayando hace dos o tres meses y hablamos de ello, pero no suena bien si lo hacemos sin Raymond. Por otra parte, me siento afortunada por poder tocar algunas canciones de Theatre of Tragedy en mi repertorio en solitario y los chicos están felices porque eso mantiene vivo el espíritu de la banda y eso es todo lo que hay ahora mismo. A veces coincidimos en conciertos, pero la sensación que tenemos todos es que debemos estar todos juntos si hay una reunión, no puede ser de otra manera. Pero ¿sabes qué? Tal vez pueda invitar a Tommy Lindal a tocar conmigo. Tommy, Michael y yo somos muy buenos amigos y, quien sabe, si actúo en Stavanger tal vez pueda invitar a Tommy a tocar conmigo, sería un sueño para mí. Siento que tocar con mis compañeros de Theatre of Tragedy es una forma de honrar nuestro legado, como lo hice cuando giré con Raymond en 2015-16 y tocar con Tommy sería un honor. Algo parecido es lo que quiero hacer con Carmen, para honrar a mi hermana y a mi familia. Creo que el legado de Theatre of Tragedy merece estar vivo.

EM: Sabes que en el pasado te sugerí alguna canción que luego llevaste al directo, como “Changes” de Black Sabbath. En esta ocasión quiero sugerirte, además de “Pictured within”, “Cassandra” de Theatre of Tragedy porque creo que encaja a la perfección con tus dos últimos discos. Creo que es una canción muy especial para tus fans, para ti y, por supuesto, para mí…

LK: ¿Sabes qué? El domingo pasado fui a trabajar y una de mis compañeras es muy fan de Theatre of Tragedy, como tú, y me dijo: Liv, ¿sabes qué? Creo que deberías tocar “Cassandra” ¿en serio? Así que sois dos personas muy cercanas a mí que me estáis sugiriendo lo mismo y vamos a estudiar incluirla en el repertorio que estamos preparando para América Latina. Ahora tengo una amiga de Stavanger y un amigo de Barcelona que opinan igual y me lo han dicho en la misma semana así que creo que debo tenerlo en cuenta (risas).

EM: Bueno Liv, no tengo más preguntas. Muchas gracias por estar aquí conmigo porque sé que no estás bien de salud y has hecho un gran esfuerzo por estar este rato conmigo y es algo que aprecio sobremanera.

LK: Ahora me siento un poco mejor. Siempre es un honor y un placer hablar con mi mayor fan de todos los tiempos. Y por supuesto, tu familia y tu estáis invitados a venir a nuestra casa en Stavanger. No tengo palabras para agradecerte la invitación. Somos un equipo y es un orgullo trabajar contigo y para ti. Por favor saluda a tu familia de mi parte. Finalmente no pueden venir a verte a Nagold pero al día siguiente van a estar en Stuttgart y si visitáis el Mercado de Navidad con Leon, creo que nos encontraremos todos allí así que espero que todos se conozcan en persona y podamos tomarnos una foto las dos familias juntas. ¡Por supuesto! cuando nos veamos en Nagold cuadramos horarios y nos vemos en el mercado de navidad, será maravilloso encontrarnos allí.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): ¿Qué esperas de ‘¿Amor Vincit Omnia’, tanto por parte de los fans como de la prensa?
MICHAEL HANSEN ESPENAES(MH): ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ es un disco lleno de corazón, fuerza y emoción. Esperamos que la prensa reconozca tanto el crecimiento musical como el coraje que hay detrás de este trabajo y deseamos de verdad que nuestros fans conecten con la profundidad del mensaje y su intensidad. Para Liv, la banda y para mí personalmente se trata de un viaje muy íntimo, especialmente porque lo hemos creado juntos. Me siento muy orgulloso de haber formado parte de él. Al escucharlo puedes sentir la honestidad y esa conexión y creo que esa autenticidad resuena en todo el disco.

EM: En “Amor Vincit Omnia” es la primera vez que grabas voces guturales con Liv ¿Cómo te has sentido? Si tengo que ser honesto creo que has solventado el problema que Liv tenía con las voces guturales en el escenario desde hace años. Creo que Liv lo ha solucionado contigo y realmente disfruto tu trabajo tanto en estudio como en directo.
MH: Sí, ha sido la primera vez que hemos experimentado con guturales juntos en un disco y ha sido un proceso realmente excitante. Liv siempre ha tenido esa energía única, y el contraste con mi voz aporta algo poderoso a las canciones. Estoy orgulloso que lo sientas de esa manera. Creo que definitivamente añade más dinamismo a su sonido.

EM: Creo que desde que Liv y tu estáis juntos, su carrera es mucho más consistente y creo que era algo muy necesario para ella. Liv está actuando cada vez más, está publicando un disco por año y eso ayuda a estar presente en los medios de comunicación y a que los fans hablen de ella todo el tiempo ¿estás de acuerdo conmigo?
MH: Muchas gracias por tus palabras. Apoyo y animo a Liv cada día y hablamos mucho de nueva música y proyectos creativos. Liv es una de las personas más dedicadas y pasionales con las que he trabajado nunca y creo que la consistencia en su trabajo refleja verdaderamente su libertad artística y el foco de sus objetivos. Está siendo un honor ser parte de este viaje y apoyarla para mostrar su visión de la vida.

EM: ¿Hay posibilidades que Liv y tu cantéis “Pictured within” este año en Nagold? Adoro esa canción y la química que Liv y tu mostráis en ella.
MH: Muchas gracias, eso significa mucho para mí. “Pictured within” es una pieza profundamente emocional para nosotros. Se me ocurrió la idea de versionarla como un homenaje a familia y amigos. Cantarla en directo es algo muy especial y sí, estamos considerando seriamente incluirla en el setlist de Nagold.

EM: Desde el lanzamiento ‘River of Diamonds’ estáis intentando cerrar fechas para una posible gira europea y otra por América Latina ¿Cómo está este tema en estos momentos? Muchos fans de América Latina me preguntan por ello porque están esperando a Liv Kristine desde hace años…
MH: Planificar una gira siempre es un reto pero estamos cerca de conseguirlo. Espero que pronto podamos confirmar fechas por América Latina porque sabemos que hay una gran base de fans allí y que son muy pasionales pero desgraciadamente los promotores están teniendo dificultades para agendar conciertos.

EM: Formas parte de la industria musical desde hace años así que quiero preguntarte por tu opinión sobre Metalville y el trabajo que están haciendo con los discos de Liv.
MH: En estos momentos, Metalville es el único sello en el que de verdad creo de todo el planeta. Nos dan total libertad creativa y apoyan plenamente la visión de Liv. Aportan el espacio necesario que Liv necesita como artista y su promoción la ha ayudado a llegar a un nuevo público. En la industria musical actual eso tiene un valor incalculable así que en general creo que se trata de una colaboración positiva. Nos gustaría agradecer sinceramente a Holger Koch, Thomas Ziegler, Stephan Burmeister y a todo Metalville.

EM: ¿Sigue funcionando tu discográfica Allegro Talent Media?
MH: Allegro Talent Media sigue activa. He pasado de trabajar con Plastic Head Distribution y ZYX Music a hacerlo con Edel Music y Kontor Media, en colaboración con Metalville Records y tengo varios lanzamientos suculentos previstos para 2026. Allegro Talent Media se mantiene como un espacio de creatividad e independencia, un propósito que intentamos reflejar en todos los productos que lanzamos.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): What can you expect about ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’, both from press and fans?
MICHAEL HANSEN (MH): «Amor Vincit Omnia» is an album full of heart, strength, and emotion. We hope the press will recognize both the musical growth and the courage behind this work. And we truly wish for our fans to connect deeply with the album’s message and intensity. For Liv, the band, and for me personally, it’s a very intimate journey especially because we created it together. I’m grateful to have been part of it. You can feel that honesty and connection throughout the album, and I believe this authenticity will really resonate with people.

EM: With “Amor Vincit Omnia” is the first time you records growls with Liv? How did you feel doing that? If I have to be honest, I think I has solved the problem she has with growls on stage since so many years ago. I think Liv has solved this problem with you. I really enjoy your work both on studio and on stage.
MH: Yes, it was the first time we experimented with growls together on a record. It was a really exciting process. Liv has always had this unique energy, and the contrast with my vocals brought something powerful to the songs. I’m glad you feel that way. It definitely added a new dynamic to her sound.

EM: I think Liv’s career has been very consistent and constant since she met you and I think that was very necessary for her. Liv is performing more and more and releasing one album a year and that helps her to be in the media and on fans conversations all the time. Do you agree with me?
MH: Thank you so much for the kind words. I support and encourage Liv every day, and we talk a lot about new music and creative projects. Liv is one of the most dedicated and passionate artists I’ve ever worked with. I believe the consistency in her work truly reflects her artistic freedom and focus. It’s been an honor to be part of this journey and to support her in bringing her vision to life.

EM: Is there any chance you sing “Pictured within” with Liv on stage in Nagold’ 25? I really love this song and your vocal chemistry in your cover version.
MH: Thank you, that truly means a lot to me. «Pictured Within» is a deeply emotional piece for both of us. I came up with the idea to cover it, as it’s a tribute to family and friends. To performing it live is a something very special and yes, we’re seriously considering including it in the setlist for Nagold.

EM: Since the release of ‘River of Diamonds’ you are trying to close a European tour and a Latin American tour, where are these plans at?
MH: Tour planning is always a challenge, but we’re very close to our goal. We’ll soon be able to confirm dates in Latin America. We know there’s a strong and passionate fan base there. We also have many fans in Europe, but unfortunately, promoters are having a hard time booking concerts.

EM: Since you have been in the musical industry since some so many years ago, what’s your opinion about Metalville and the way the promote Liv’s albums?
MH: Right now, Metalville Records is the only label I truly trust in the current landscape. They give us complete creative freedom and fully support Liv’s vision. They provide her with the space she needs as an artist, and their promotion has helped her reach a new audience. In today’s music industry, a partnership like this is absolutely invaluable. EM: Is your own record label Allegro Talent Media still running?
MH: Yes, Allegro Talent Media is still active. I’ve transitioned from Plastic Head Distribution and ZYX Music to working with Edel Music and Kontor Media, in collaboration with Metalville Records. There are several exciting releases planned for 2026. Allegro Talent Media remains a space for creativity and independence—something we aim to reflect in every product we put out.

Sascha Dannenberger es un guitarrista de estudio con una dilatada carrera de 30 años como músico tanto de estudio y de directo con varias bandas. Ha recorrido medio mundo y tiene su estudio en el que trabaja en la sombra.
Desde hace un tiempo trabaja estrechamente con Liv Kristine y se ha encargado de la composición de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ y el resultado salta a la vista con una colección de canciones que abarcan una paleta de colores muy amplia y donde la sensibilidad reina por encima de todo.
Charlamos con Sascha, un tipo encantador, para que nos revele algunos de los entresijos del nuevo disco de Liv Kristine.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): Creo que has compuesto toda la música de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ ¿Cuánto tiempo te ha llevado este proceso? ¿Qué es lo que más has disfrutado y lo que menos?
SASCHA DANNENBERGER (SD): Creo que el proceso complete me ha llevado como dos años. Ha habido periodos de tiempos en los que he tenido más o menos tiempo para escribir canciones. Las primeras 10 o 15 canciones las escribe en los dos primeros meses. Finalmente hubo 20 canciones de las que Liv escogió 11. La mayoría del tiempo lo dediqué a la mezcla porque en las canciones de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ hay varios estilos diferentes y tuve que encontrar un equilibrio para todo el disco. Lo que menos tiempo me ha llevado es todo lo relativo a la guitarra, que es mi instrumento principal desde hace 30 años.

EM: ¿Tuviste total Libertad a la hora de componer o Liv te iba dando algunas indicaciones de lo que quería? Imagino que cambiabais demos e ideas de todo lo que ibas escribiendo…
SD: Cuando todo empezó, le pregunté a Liv si había algún patrón a seguir. Eso es algo que aprendí en mis anteriores trabajos como músico de sesión, lo cual es realmente útil para tener un buen punto de partida. Liv me envió una lista de canciones que le gustaban y en qué dirección quería ir y yo le iba enviando mis ideas. Si Liv elegía una, era sobre todo porque me pedía algo instrumental, como que doblara el estribillo del final o que pusiera versos algo más largos. Ambos tenemos casi los mismos gustos musicales.

EM: ¿Estás satisfecho con el resultado final?
SD: Estás preguntando a la persona equivocada porque soy un perfeccionista y si no hubiera aprendido a parar en ciertos momentos aún podría estar trabajando en las primeras canciones que escribí…
Grabar un disco es como pintar un cuadro: captas el momento.
Pero respondiendo a tu pregunta, estoy muy orgulloso del resultado final.

EM: Encuentro ciertos paralelismos entre este nuevo disco y ‘Skintight’ ¿ha sido una inspiración para ti?
SD: He intentado no escuchar mucho del increíble bagaje musical de Liv. He escuchado más a artistas que tanto a Liv como a mí nos gustan y en los que podía encontrar puntos en común con nuestra visión del disco.

EM: ¿Cuáles son tus canciones favoritas del disco?
SD: Me encanta que todas se conviertan en especiales, pero “Melange” significa algo más para mí pues fue la primera canción que escribí para Liv.
“Ode to life pristine” también es una canción muy especial para mí porque escribe la parte instrumental en la mañana que leí en el periódico que Putin había invadido Ucrania, algo que nunca expliqué a Liv y ella convirtió eso en algo positivo e inspirador.

EM: Para la gente que no esté familiarizada contigo ¿puedes hablarles de tu bagaje musical?
SD: Empecé a tocar la guitarra con 15 años. Vi el video clip de “November Rain” de Guns N’ Roses e instantáneamente me enamoré de tocar la guitarra. Me aficioné a la guitarra y practicaba 10 horas al día cuando podía y pronto empecé a recibir clases de un profesor que estudió en el GIT Los Ángeles. Después de tres años me subió a los escenarios con sus proyectos y mi primer concierto fue ante 1000 personas en mi 18 cumpleaños. Dos años después, me dispuse a ejercer con él de telonero para Thin Lizzy en su gira de 2000. Después de eso, estudié en el M.G.I. de Munich y desde entonces he tocado en muchas bandas y varios estilos. Nunca separo la música de la gente que la hace si la música se hace desde el corazón.
He tocado la guitarra en varios discos, he hecho giras por todo el mundo y he actuado en escenarios muy pequeños y muy grandes. A principios de este año también obtuve mi diploma como ingeniero de audio.
Llevo 30 años dedicándome a la música y ha habido buenos momentos y también otros duros, pero estoy contento por no haber perdido nunca mi pasión y de seguir haciéndolo en tiempos como estos en los que la música ha perdido la mayor parte de su magia para el gran público.

EM: Creo que Liv y tú tenéis una química especial en el escenario y ahora veo que en estudio, también ¿Cuán especial resulta trabajar con Liv?
SD: Con la primera llamada telefónica que tuvimos ya sentí como si nos conociéramos hace muchos años. Ella es una persona muy humilde, sobre todo si tenemos en cuenta todo lo que ha hecho en su vida. Me encanta que tenga la mente abierta en todas las direcciones sin perder de vista lo que realmente quiere. Como compartimos las mismas perspectivas musicales no se trata de una cuestión de trabajo sino más bien como pintar juntos un único cuadro.

EM: Y, por último, ¿Qué esperas de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’?
SD: Nada, creo que es la Muerte del arte cuando tu empiezas hacienda música para otros y no para mí. Siempre pongo toda mi alma en todo lo que hago y cuando puedo llegar a alguien con ello me siento más que feliz… pero ante todo tengo que llegar a mí mismo.

Sascha Dannenberger is a studio guitarist with a 30-year long career as both a studio and live musician with various bands. He has travelled halfway around the world and has his own studio where he works in the shadows.
For some time now he has been working closely with Liv Kristine and has been in charge of the composition of ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ and the result is clear to see with a collection of songs that cover a very wide palette of colours and where sensitivity reigns supreme.
We chatted with Sascha, a charming guy, to reveal some of the ins and outs of Liv Kristine’s new album.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): I think you had composed all ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ music. How long did it take to you? What did it take to you the most and the least?
SASCHA DANNENBERGER (SD): I think the whole process started about 2 years ago. There were periods where I had some more or less time to write songs. The first 10 to 15 songs I wrote in the first 2 months. In the end there where about 20 songs and Liv picked 11 from them. The most time I spent on mixing because the songs of Amor Vincit Omnia were in so many different styles, I had to find an overall sound for the album. The least time I needed for all the guitar stuff – it´s my main instrument for over 30 years now.

EM: Did you have total freedom to write the songs or did Liv give you some indications? I imagine you were exchanging opinions and demos of what you were writing…
SD: When it all started, I asked Liv for a moodboard. It´s something I learned from previous songwriting sessions I´ve done, which is a really helpful thing to get a good start point. Liv send me a playlist of songs she likes and in which direction she wants to go and from there on I just sent her my ideas. If she picked one there where mainly some instrumental requests from her, like I want that chorus in the end doubled or a longer vers. We both share nearly the same musical taste.

EM: Are you satisfied with the final result?
SD: You´re asking the wrong one – I´m a perfectionist and if I hadn´t learned to stop at a certain point I would still be working on my very first songs I wrote…
Recording an album is like painting a picture – you are catching a moment.
But to answer your question – I´m very proud of what came out in the end.

EM: I can find some parallels with Liv’s ‘Skintight’ album. Has it been an inspiration for you?
SD: I tried not to hear too much into Liv´s incredible Backing catalogue. I´ve listened more to artists she likes and where I can find contact points to our vision of the album.

EM: What’s about your favorites songs of the album?
SD: I love how all of them became something special – but Melange means a little bit more to me, because it was the very first song I wrote for Liv.
Ode to life pristine is also very special song to me because I wrote the instrumental part in the morning as I read in newspaper that Putin invaded Ukraine – I never told Liv and she turned it into something so positive and inspiring.

EM: To the people that are not familiar with you. Can you please tell them about your musical background?
SD: I started playing guitar when I was 15. I saw the November Rain Video from Guns N Roses and instantly fell in love with guitar playing. I became quite a guitar nerd, practicing 10hours a day when I could and soon started getting lessons from a teacher who studied at the GIT Los Angeles. After three years he took me on stage with all his projects, so that my first show in front of 1000 people was at my 18th birthday. Two years later I was able to play as opener for the Thin Lizzy tour 2000 with him. After that I studied at the M.G.I. Munich and from then on i played in so many bands in so different styles. I never separate music from the people who are doing it – if someone makes music from the heart I’m with it. I‘ve played guitar on several records, did some touring worldwide and played from very small to very big stages. At the beginning of this year I finished my diploma as audio engineer, too. I‘m doing music for living for over 30 years now – there were hard times and there where good ones…but I‘m happy, that I never lost my passion and I‘m still able to do it in times like these, where music lost most of it‘s magic for the mainstream.

EM: I think Liv and you have a special chemistry on stage and now in the studio too. What’s special about working with Liv?
SD: With the very first phonecall i talked to her it felt like we‘ve known us for years. She‘s such a humble person – even more if you have in mind, what she has already done in her lifetime. I love how she‘s open minded in all directions without loosing her sight of what she really wants. Since we share the same musical visions it‘s not really a working situation – it‘s more like painting on one picture together.

EM: What do you expect about ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’?
SD: Nothing – I think, it´s the death of art when you start making music for others than yourself. I always put my whole soul in everything I do – and when I can touch someone with it I´m more than happy…but first at all it has to touch myself.

Hoy es 25 de abril. Hoy es el día de lanzamiento de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’. Hoy es el día que Liv Kristine presenta en directo sus nuevas canciones con un concierto exclusivo en la sala De Pul, en Uden (Países Bajos) y mañana lo hará también en el Vinyl Café de Dorsten, también en Países Bajos
He hecho decenas de entrevistas con Liv por mail, teléfono, en persona… En esta ocasión ha sido distinto . La idea era hacer la entrevista por mail pero Liv ha vuelto a sorprenderme una vez más y días más tarde me llegaron dos vídeos con la entrevista hecho. Ella misma se ha autoentrevistado en el comedor de su casa mientras pone música de fondo, mientras Bailly, su perro, está con ella. La entrevista es tan personal que hasta muestra donde ha hecho las sesiones de fotos con Mariël Rohrbach y enseña algunas cosas que han utilizado para ello. Creo que no tiene desperdicio y que, probablemente, sea la entrevista más personal que Liv haya concedido.

Obviamente hay cosas, muchas, que se han quedado en el tintero pero en ambos vídeos, Liv habla sobre varios temas del disco como «12th Februaru», «Melange», «Ode to Life Pristine» o «Sapphire heaven». También lo hace de su trabajo mano a mano son su guitarrista y compositor Sascha Dannenberger en el estudio; de como nació «Prelude», de Theatre of Tragedy, de su infancia en la naturaleza, de café, de «Der tanz der schatten» y hasta de Leonard Cohen y Chris Isaak.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): ¿Por qué escogiste el blanco y negro para la portada del disco? ¿Crees que ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ es el disco más oscuro de Liv Kristine en solitario?
MARIËL ROHRBACH (MR): Hacer la portada en blanco y negro fue idea de Liv.
Las dos nos inspiramos en un retrato que encontramos pero lo mezclamos con nuestras propias visiones, un ángulo diferente y pensamos que sería increíble que Liv tuviera el pelo suelto. Para ello utilizamos un secador que Liv sujetaba a su espalda mientras hacíamos la foto.
Sobre si es su disco más oscuro… por lo que sé y lo que he escuchado creo que la canción que abre el disco con Michael es, definitivamente una de sus canciones más oscuras. Desde el punto de vista letrístico, Liv profundiza bastante, pero no solo en temas “oscuros”. También hay canciones maravillosas sobre el amor y la naturaleza que están mezclados con un sonido más oscuro. Aun así, creo que en los discos anteriores (‘River of diamonds’ y ‘Vervain’) también hay oscuridad. Pero Liv también es luz y encontrarás ambas vertientes en el disco.
Me encanta pensar que la música de Liv no se puede encasillar solo en un concepto sino que es la fuerza de Liv para mantenerse fiel a su corazón y, musicalmente, puede ir en cualquier dirección y todo se acaba mezclando. Este disco puede ser oscuro pero también tiene clase, es maduro y ligero.

EM: En nuestra entrevista previa, para ‘River of diamonds’ me explicaste que estuviste muy nerviosa porque Liv idolatras a Liv y es una verdadera amiga para ti ¿Ha sido diferente esta vez? ¿Estuviste más relajada?
MR: ¡SÍ! Pero aun así, en el fondo, puedo tener un poco de ansiedad – a veces tus mayores pasiones son también cosas que te asustan un poco. Esta vez íbamos más preparadas y sabía que Liv también esperaba fotos en blanco y negro así que me traje un fondo negro pop up. Hicimos todas las fotos dentro de su casa y sólo usé la luz que entraba por la ventana y eso hizo que fuera muy natural. Lo que también ayudó MUCHO es que nos sentamos juntas esa misma noche e hicimos una selección de todas las fotos que hicimos. Y a partir de ellas hicimos una nueva selección, de modo que sólo me quedé con las que podía editar. Así, en lugar de enviarle todas mis fotos en un pequeño archivo, llegué a casa con exactamente las fotos que tenía que editar. Sabía cuáles debían ser en color y cuáles en blanco y negro. Tuve que editarlas rápidamente, pero lo conseguimos y podemos estar muy orgullosas del resultado.

EM: En esta occasion hiciste tres sesiones de fotos en un fin de semana con diferentes conceptos, iluminaciones, vestuarios y localizaciones ¿qué vertientes de Liv querías mostrar?
MR: Sólo tuvimos el sábado para hacer fotos. Liv ya había planeado el vestuario y los looks que quería. El posado fluyó con naturalidad y utilizamos lo que teníamos, como la silla. En las fotos con las manos cruzadas, Liv estaba sentada en el suelo y utilizamos el banco de su mesa para que apoyara los brazos. Y como ya he mencionado, el pelo ondulado se ha creado utilizando un secador. Liv también tenía en mente la idea del cuadro ‘Girl with the pearl’ (“La joven de la perla’ de Johannes Vermeer en el año 1665, ndr.). Inspirándose en él, Liv llevaba un pañuelo azul y dorado en el pelo y un chaleco de punto azul sobre los hombros. Aquí, yo tenía el flash apuntando al dorado del pañuelo para que se iluminara un poco. También hicimos una foto con la misma pose e iluminación que el cuadro. A Liv también se le ocurrió la idea de sostener una taza y ¡le encantó el resultado!
Al día siguiente le hicimos fotos a Micheal ¡y lo hizo muy bien! Era nuevo para él hacer esto ¡pero salieron increíbles!
Sólo espero retratar a Liv con la mayor pureza posible. Ese es mi único y verdadero objetivo.
Cuando estuvimos en Nagold el año pasado, también hicimos fotos de la banda y también del loto en las manos de Micheal. Esa la hice dentro del local justo antes de salir a hacer las fotos de la banda. Fuimos al castillo de Nagold y nunca antes había estado allí. Teníamos poco tiempo y tenía que colocar a cada miembro en un lugar determinado. Fue todo un reto, pero salió muy bien. Tuvimos mucha suerte con el tiempo ya que era finales de noviembre (aunque la lluvia habría quedado genial en las fotos, estábamos muy contentos con el sol, ya que tuvimos que caminar hasta allí).

EM: ¿Basaste el concepto de las sesiones en las nuevas canciones o quizá Liv ted io algunas ideas? ¿Cuál es la forma de trabajar con Liv?
MR: No había escuchado ninguna canción de antemano, algunas canciones ni siquiera estaban terminadas.
En este caso, Liv tenía una idea en mente, y los vestuarios, y teníamos nuestro retrato de inspiración. Tengo que asegurarme de tener la iluminación adecuada y luego ya veremos qué pasa. También tenía algunas fotos en Pinterest como inspiración, pero al final, lo que ves es realmente el resultado del flujo creativo que tuvimos juntas. A Liv le gusta ver las fotos justo después, las revisamos y vimos qué funciona y qué no. Y continuamos hasta que creemos que tenemos suficiente.

EM: Si has escuchado el disco ¿Qué opinas de ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’? ¿Qué canciones te gustan más?
MR: ¡Me encanta la canción que da título al disco, con Michael! Y “Sapphire heaven” es otra de mis favoritas. Creo que, una vez más, este disco es muy personal y muy profundo que sale directo desde el corazón. Creo que hay que tener muchas agallas para cantar como Liv lo hace en “Ode to life Pristine”. Es muy frágil.

EM: Déjame preguntarte cómo sería la session de fotos perfecta con Liv ¿qué outfit y que localizaciones utilizarías?
MR: Oh esta es una pregunta difícil. ¡Creo que sería increíble tener una ubicación como un exuberante bosque verde con niebla o unos pocos rayos de sol, o tal vez en una playa de arena negra con rocas … o tal vez fotos bajo el agua sería increíble! Pero no tengo experiencia en eso. En cuanto al vestuario, Liv siempre hace fotos con sus vestidos. Si yo tuviera que elegir, cualquiera con el que Liv se sienta cómoda. Tal vez algo con telas muy fluidas que se levanten con el viento. Algo etéreo. O algo con un blazer negro de cintura ajustada, hombros puntiagudos y cadenas, casi como “Corporate Goth”. Oscuro, pero con clase.

EM: ¿Tienes planes de future con Liv?
MR: ¡Sí, los temenos, y serán en Noruega, algún día!

EM: Quizá haya fans de Liv que no estén familiarizados contigo así que me gustaría que les explicaras sobre tu pasión por la fotografía y donde pueden encontrar tus trabajos ¿tienes planes para trabajar con más bandas?
MR: Gracias ;-) Me llamo Mariël Rohrbach y soy de los Países Bajos. Mi primer concierto de Leaves’ Eyes fue en 2007 y allí me llevé mi pequeña cámara. Ese día me hice fan de Liv al instante. A lo largo de los años hice más fotos en sus conciertos y también en otros conciertos en los que me lo permitieron, y conseguí mi primera cámara DSLR. Después, siempre le he enviado las fotos. Poco me imaginaba que años más tarde me invitarían a hacer fotos de Liv. También fotografío bodas de vez en cuando, y tengo mi propia web: www.marielrohrbach.com. 


Hace poco mi cuñada me pidió que hiciera fotos de su banda de soul. También hago fotos de instagram para una amiga que tiene su propio salón de tratamiento de la piel. Me encantaría fotografiar a otras bandas también, pero no soy tan auto-promotora.

EM: ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta fotografiar en tus viajes personales?
MR: Sobre todo detalles de la naturaleza y de mi entorno, y especialmente de mis seres queridos cuando no miran o no saben que estoy allí. La mayoría de las veces, cuando vuelvo de viaje, casi no hay fotos mías (risas). Una vez fui a Viena y me hice una foto delante de un edificio mirando hacia arriba (para que se vieran todas las líneas de ese edificio). Cuando terminé, había una señora mayor con cara de confusión, sin saber qué era tan interesante. Pero ese es el recuerdo que tengo de esa foto. Todavía me hace sonreír.

INTERVIEW WITH MARIEL ROHRBACH

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): Why did you choose black & white for the front cover of the album? Do you think ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ is Liv Kristine’s darkest album as a solo?
MARIËL ROHRBACH (MR): The black and white cover was Liv’s own idea. We both were inspired by a portrait we came across, but blended that with our own visions, a different angle and we thought it would be amazing to have Liv’s hair flowing. (We used a blowdryer for that which Liv held herself behind her back on the picture).
If it is her darkest solo album, well, for as far as I know and heard, I think that the opening track with Micheal is definitely one of her darkest songs. Lyrically, Liv goes quite deep, but not only about “Dark” themes. There are also wonderful songs about love and nature. They are blended with a darker sound I believe. Still I think that on the previous albums (River of Diamonds and Vervain) there is darkness too. But Liv also is Light. You will find both on the album.
I just love to think that Liv’s music is not to be put in just one box. It is Liv’s strength to stay true to her heart, and musically it can go any way, yet still it all blends together. This album can be found dark, but it is also classy, mature and light.

EM: In our previous interview about ‘River of diamonds’ you told me that you were really nervous because Liv is an idol and a true friend for you. It has been different for this time? Were you more relaxed this time?
MR: YES! But still, deep down I can get a bit anxious- sometimes your biggest passions are also things that scare you a bit. This time, we were more prepared, I knew Liv was hoping for black and white pictures as well, and I got a black pop up background with me. We took all portraits inside her home, and I only used the light that came through the window, that kept it natural. What also helped a LOT is that we sat down together that same night, and made a selection of all pictures we took. And from those we made a new selection so I only kept the ones which I could edit. So instead of the previous time when I send her all my pictures in a small file, I got home with exactly the pictures I had to edit. I knew which ones were supposed to be in color and which ones black and white. I had to edit them quickly though, but we managed and we can be very proud of the results!

EM: On this time you did 3 photo shoots in one weekend, with different concepts, lighting, location and wardrobe, what sides of Liv did you want to show?
MR: We had only the Saturday to take pictures. Liv already had planned which outfits and looks she wanted. The posing was flowing naturally and we used what we had, like the chair. The pictures with her hands folded, Liv was sitting on the floor and we used her dinner table bench for her to rest her arms on.

And as I mentioned, the wavy hair has been created by using a blowdryer. Liv also had this idea in mind of the “Girl with the Pearl” painting. Inspired by that, Liv had a blue and gold scarf in her hair and a blue knitted vest over her shoulders. Here I had my flash aimed at the gold in the scarf so it would light up a bit. We also took a picture using the same pose and lighting as the painting as well. Liv also came up with the idea to hold a cup and she loved the results! The next day we took pictures of Micheal, and he did so well! It was new for him to do this but they turned out amazing! I just hope and aim to portrait Liv just as pure as possible. That is my only true goal.
When we were in Nagold last year, we took pictures of the band, and also from the lotus in Micheal’s hands. I took that one inside of the venue just before we went out to do the band pictures. We went to the castle of Nagold and I have never been there before. We had limited time and I had to put every member at a certain spot. That was a bit of a challenge but it worked out great.! We got so lucky with the weather since it was the end of November. (Even though rain would have looked cool on the pictures, we were very happy with the sun, since we had to walk all the way up there).

EM: Did you based the concept of your sessions in the new Liv songs or maybe Liv took some ideas for you? How is the way you work with Liv?
MR: I haven’t heard any music beforehand, some of it wasn’t ready yet. In this case, Liv had a view in mind, and the outfits, and we had our inspirational portrait. I have to make sure I have the right lighting, and then we’ll see what happens. I also had a few pictures on Pinterest as an inspiration but in the end, what you see is truely a result of our creative flow we had together. Liv likes to look at the pictures right after, we check them and look what works and what doesn’t. And we continue until we think we have enough.


EM: What do you think about ‘Amor Vincit Omnia?’ If you listened the album, what songs do you like the most?
MR: I really love the title track with Micheal! And Sapphire Heaven another favorite of mine! I think that this album is, once again, a very deep personal album straight from the heart. I think that it takes a lot of guts to sing like Liv sings “Ode to life Pristine”. Very fragile.

EM: Let me ask you how would the perfect photo session with Liv be in your opinion? What outfit and locations would you choose for Liv?
MR: Ooh that is a tough one. I think that it would be amazing to have a location as a lush green forest with fog OR a few rays of sunshine, or maybe on a black sand beach with rocks… or maybe underwater shots would be amazing! But I have no experience with that! Outfit wise, Liv always pics her outfits. If I were to choose, than whatever outfit feels comfortable for Liv. Maybe something with very flowy fabrics that gets picked up by the wind. Something ethereal. OR Something with a black, tight waisted blazer and pointy shoulders and chains, like “Corporate Goth” almost. Still dark but also classy. 



EM: Do you have future plans with Liv?
MR: Yes, we do! And that will be in Norway one day! 



EM: Maybe some Liv fans are not familiar with you. Could you please tell to our readers about your photograph passion and where can we find your works? Are you planning to work with some more bands?
MR: Thank you ;-) So, my name is Mariël Rohrbach, from the Netherlands. My first Leaves’ Eyes concert was in 2007 and there I took my little camera with me. I became an instant fan of Liv that day. Through the years I took more pictures at her concerts and also at other concerts where I was allowed to, and got my first DSLR camera. Afterwards, I have always send her the pictures. Little did I know that years later I got invited to take Liv’s portraits. I also photograph weddings now and then, and have my own little website: www.marielrohrbach.com . 


I recently got asked by my sister in law to take pictures of her soul band soon. I also photograph instagram pictures for a friend who has her own skin-treatment salon. I would love to take pictures of other bands as well, but I am not such a self-promotor :-)


EM: What do you like photograph the most when you are on a personal travel?
MR: Mostly details in nature and my surroundings, and most of all of my loved ones. Especially when they are not looking or knowing that I am there! Most of the time, when I return from travel, there are almost no pictures of myself :). I went to Vienna once and I took a picture in front of a building looking straight up (so you can see all the lines of that building). When I was done, there was an older lady looking really confused, not knowing what was so interesting. But that is the memory I have with that picture. It still makes me smile.

‘AMOR VINCIT OMNIA’ STUDIO REPORT

‘Amor Vincit Omnia” es el séptimo trabajo en solitario de Liv Kristine. El segundo bajo los auspicios de Metalville. El segundo disco completo de estudio desde que decidió dar continuidad a su carrera en solitario. ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ es, probablemente, su disco más inmersivo e intimista. ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ es, sin duda, su disco más pasional y emotivo.
A continuación desgranamos todas las canciones del disco, una a una, es un studio report en el que busco paralelismo y analizo melodías, letras y emociones de un disco tan sincero como puro, porque ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ es Liv Kristine en estado puro.

“Prelude”
Se trata de una intro muy ambiental, muy del estilo de las que acostumbra a utilizar en sus conciertos. Las constantes vitales son muy importantes para Liv y quizá, fruto de ello, esta introducción empieza y termina con una un corazón latiendo.

“Amor Vincit Omnia”
“El amor siempre vence”… creo que el disco no puede empezar con un lema mejor y que es el leit motiv en la vida de Liv. El estribillo de esta canción parece sacado de “Love decay” pero con el tempo ralentizado. Se trata del tema más Gothic Metal del disco y en el que incluso hay voces guturales a cargo de Michael Hansen, marido de Liv y que creo que tiene un tono vocal muy acertado y en consonancia con Liv. EL final de la canción, con la voz limpia y clara de Liv recitando ese “I promise to find you in any lifetime” para entremezclarse con la gutural de Michael en ese “Amor Vincit Omnia” es quizá uno de los momentos estelares del disco.

“Ode to Life Pristine”
Una balada muy emocional donde reina la voz de Liv con una música muy minimalista que crece en los estribillos. El tema termina con Liv cantado a capela el título de la canción.

“12th February”
En las decenas de escuchas que llevo del disco, creo poder afirmar que se trata de mi tema favorito. Su estructura es muy parecida al resto de canciones pero esos golpes prolongados de batería crean una atmósfera sobrecogedora que desembocan en un estribillo pegadizo de esos de escuchar con los ojos cerrados.
El teclado inicial me lleva a “Meet me in the red sky” guardando mucho las distancias.

“Angel in Disguise”
Maravilloso medio tiempo que crece en las partes centrales. Se trata de una canción marca de la casa en la que Liv y toda la banda lucen en su máximo esplendor. Se trata de un tema muy de directo.

“Hold it with your life”
Se trata de un tema muy rítmico que crece en el estribillo y que puede funcionar muy bien en directo. Si bien la estructura de las canciones puede ser relativamente parecida, en “Hold it with your love” el estribillo es realmente pegadizo e inspiradísimo con esos versos que dicen:
“What have I done
The pain is over
Only maybe over
Questions pouring like scissor rain
But there’s a power like a calling to seek something deep
I hold it with my life
Hold it with your life”
Cuanto más lo escuchas, más te llega. Una pieza maravillosa.

“Sapphire Heaven”
Un tema que mezcla muy bien el rock con un teclado imponente que actúa en segundo plano. En el estribillo pienso que Liv va a versionar “Wicked game” de Chris Isaak.

“Unzip my Love”
Es el tema más movido y desenfadado del disco y donde las guitarras cobran un mayor protagonismo.

“Melange (Whenaddictioncalls)”
Una balada muy del estilo Liv Kristine en la que se alternan guitarras acústicas y eléctricas y donde hasta escuchamos la voz de Liv en off mientras hace acto de presencia un bajo prominente.

“Tangerines”
La guitarra acústica inicial me lleva a “Life line” de su disco ‘Skintight’ y entonces nada puede ir mal. Luego el tema se endurece y quizá estamos ante los riffs más duros de todo el disco. Un tema que tendría mayor empaque en el disco si hubiera sido el quinto o sexto tema del disco.

“When Stillness Speaks”
‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ se cierra con otra balada marca de la casa, emocional, oscura y sincera, y que resume el tono intimista de todo el disco.

Definitivamente Liv Kristine ha reemprendido su carrera discográfica y lo hace con solidez, alternando nuevos discos y nuevas canciones con regrabaciones de sus primeros discos.
Poco a poco van expirando los derechos que las discográficas tienen sobre sus producciones y, por fin, Liv puede volver a poner en circulación sus anteriores trabajos. Primero fue ‘Enter my religion’ y ahora es ‘Deus ex machina’. Y no va a ser el último, porque hay planes para reeditar otro trabajo más próximamente.
‘Deus ex machina’ verá la luz el próximo 1 de marzo en formato vinilo y doble cd con mucho material adicional e inédito vía Flying Dolphin Entertainment.

Esta reedición presenta varias novedades muy destacables y material muy suculento para sus fans.
Empezando por el principio, el artwork ha sido renovado. Es de sobras conocido que Liv no quedó contenta con el tratamiento fotográfico que Johannes Rau y Massacre Records hicieron para este disco en 1998. De hecho, la reedición que Massacre hizo en 1999 con el pretexto de una Fan-Edition ya incluía una O-card con una imagen totalmente diferente, actualizada y donde Liv aparecía con otro rictus.
Para la ocasión, Liv ha contado con la fotografía de Stephen Linder, que vive en Lucerna, cerca de Michael y Liv. El resultado, manteniendo algunas trazas del pasado, mezclando el libreto de fotos del box set de aquella primera edición de ‘Deus ex machina’ y actualizándolo al presente, es más que satisfactorio como puedes ver en algunas fotos de este reportaje.

La segunda novedad que aporta esta reedición es la ingente cantidad de material extra que incluye con algunas piezas totalmente inéditas hasta la fecha. Salvo error, estos son los temas inéditos y de donde han tomado el resto de temas:

Y la tercera gran novedad es la participación de Geir “Gerlioz” Breitland, Stefan Müller-Ruppert y Nick Holmes.
Gerlioz es un músico con un currículum envidiable por ser teclista de Dimmu Borgir y ex componente de Apoptygma Berzerk, Satyricon, The Kovenant, Emperor y God Seed. Con él, Liv ofrece una versión revisitada, extendida y mejorada de más de siete minutos de “Portrait: Ei tulle oyne bla” en la que dan mayor profundidad y consistencia a las atmósferas creadas.
Nick Holmes, de Paradise Lost y Bloodbath, vuelve a aparece en “3 am” y, como sucediera en 1998, ese tema vuelve a ser el primer single de este trabajo. No lo han regrabado pero sigue conservando la magia del primer día.
Y, por último, Stefan Müller-Ruppert que incluye las voces operísticas en “Deus ex machina” y que también lo hiciera en aquella primera edición. Stefan es artista de doblaje, actor y cantante alemán.

For this edition, people come from the United States and Chile, as well as from all over Europe. As we usually do at The Rarest Flower, we interviewed Liv just before the event to find out about the preparations and the last minute, but also to tell us what the next few musical months have in store for us.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): My dear friend Liv, how are you? How’s life going?
LIV KRISTINE (LK): Dear Marc, thank you so much for doing this interview with me. I can’t wait to meet you again – in just one week! I hope all is well at home. My family is doing really well. Everybody is healthy and that’s the main thing. Our families from the North were here this summer. Carmen and her family stayed here during the summer. I was so happy to spend a lot of time with my dear godchildren – we went swimming, travelled by ship across Lake Lucerne or did trips up into the Swiss Alps. It’s all very close to our home. I still love and am very dedicated to my work as a teacher for children with special needs. It’s my way of serving the world. In general we need to show more empathy and respect for each other to really make this world a better place. The children is our future and the most valuable gift on this planet. It’s in our responsibility to communicate this frequency. When I see children dying due to wars, political conflicts and destruction of Nature – everything created by grown-ups – it makes me want to cry desperately. It is really hard for me to watch the news right now. I work, among others, with traumatised children. My working day starts with giving hugs. These moments are so valuable, so powerful and healing.

EM: What new things will Nagold’s concert bring this year?
LK: The setlist will contain more tracks from my latest album „River of Diamonds“. Since you are my very special friend and long-time ultimate support I already sent it to you. You asked for „Ave Maria“, which was not included on the setlist for Nagold this year…was. I will sing it for you since you wished for it, of course.

EM: 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of 'Aègis'. Taking into account Nagold is always a unique event for you and your fans and friends, do you plan to sing something special or some new song from that album?
LK: I will perform at least one track from this masterpiece. I promise.

EM: Are you planning to sing “Pictured Within” live with your husband?
LK: Good question. Mikkel and I already talked about it. It might be a good idea for the future. This is the plan: One of our friends invited us to his 50th birthday this year. We will check out how it feels for Mikkel to actually sing live, on a stage. If it goes well we might take this step in the future.

EM: Could there be an option that Rocco Cogliati / Ecor performs “True Colours” live with you and be your support artist at Nagold?
LK: Rocco is actually going to be travelling to Nagold. It would be a brilliant idea having him on stage. You are so right. We already have a support act for this year, but I think it would be a good plan for the next Nagold Special show. Rocco is such an outstanding talent. I love the vibes he brings into his music.

EM: Unfortunately some of your fans and friends will not be able to come to Nagold this year. Do you want to say something to Adam Brown, Chris Smiedi, Anna Finke and Uli, among so many others?
LK: We will surely miss them! We will miss you guys. I am so grateful for all your endless support throughout all these years. Without you there would be no Nagold… and no ‘River of Diamonds’. This year my dear friend Tara will travel all the way from the US. Moreover, she will join me on stage.

EM: You have recently signed a contract with the management agency Dragon Productions to organize your tours and concerts. Could you give me some exclusive information about your concerts for 2024?
LK: I can let you know for now that we will play at Wacken 2024 with a very special folk-setlist which includes tracks from my whole career.

EM: You know fairly well that you have a Good bunch of fans in Latin America and that they constantly ask me when you are thinking to go to Chile, Brazil or Mexico; so, could we cheer them up by announcing some plan to present 'River of Diamonds' around there?
LK: I am still hoping and praying for a little tour to happen, at least 10 days through Latin-America. My band is really eager to fulfil this dream. I have such fantastic memories from our Latin-American shows.

EM: What is your next step forward in study? I know you’re working on two special releases; can you tell me something about these reissues?
LK: ‘Deus ex Machina’, my very first solo-album, which was released in 1998, will be re-issued in March 2024. I have a really special guest from Norway on board who re-composed and re-recorded one track of his choice, just for the re-release. You will love that one. It turned out absolutely amazing.

EM: It’s been a few months since you published 'River of diamonds', what do you think of the work that Metalville is doing to promote it?
LK: I am very happy for all their work effort and support. A sub label of Metalville, Flying Dolphin Entertainment, will also promote „Deus ex Machina“ for this reason.

EM: From the last four or five years your career seems to have taken off again with continued releases and steps forward in terms of record companies, management, booking… it seems that Liv Kristine’s name is more and more present in the media and in record stores; how do you feel about? Do you think your career needed a boost?
LK: Yes, a clear yes. I was so unhappy about what happened with Leaves’ Eyes, no need to discuss that. I really had to take care of my family, to recover and heal. Tommy Olsson was so patient with me. He kept sending me those incredible instrumental compositions and as soon as my daily life had settled and my work situation had calmed down a bit I started diving into this magic bubble of Tommy’s tunes. In 2016, 2017 and 2018 there were moments when I doubted the whole music business. I had just lost all my trust. However, Tommy, all the bands who asked for a cooperation, my fans, you, my sister held up that mirror telling me that music and singing is part of Liv Kristine’s authentic self. I realised it’s a way for me to heal, to be creative within this lifetime, to show my listeners that it’s only in the darkness that you see the light – and if you embrace this frequency, there’s a whole river of diamonds surrounding you.

MPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): How did you get to know the Liv Kristine’s music? How did you become close friends with Liv Kristine?
MARIËL ROHRBACH (MR): Back in 2007, I went to a Kamelot concert in the Netherlands, and Leaves’ Eyes was the second opening band that night. For me, it was the first metal concert I ever went to. As soon as Liv walked up the stage, and she looked me straight in my eyes (as she always does with the crowd) I was hooked. I think Liv’s fans can relate when I say that catching a glance of Liv for the first time whilst standing in the crowd is a magical experience. She captivates you, and takes you with her on her journey through Norway and through the music. I took my little pocket camera with me that night. During Kamelot’s show, I noticed Liv sitting at the little merch stand all on her own, and I wanted to go to her instead. So, we did, we talked for a bit and I remember how sweet, welcoming and graceful she was. We took a picture together. Then, I started to follow Leaves’ Eyes. I found out they would perform on a festival in NL a few months later. So we went. And then, she pointed at me during the show and she recognized me. I was overwhelmed by that feeling. How could she even remember us? During that festival, I took more pictures with the same pocket camera and that was the moment I knew, I had found my new calling, and afterwards I bought my first DSLR camera with a good “concertphotography” lens, and thought myself how to do it. That same year Leaves’ Eyes performed with the Viking Ship for the first time at the Metal Female Voices Fest, and I am grateful I was there, I even recognize my own voice in the recordings haha! Since then, we went to more concerts, me taking more pictures, in various countries, and via that way we got to meet many times, and meeting lovely people during those concerts! We became a tight group of friends. And I even met my current partner through those moments.

EM: What does working with Liv Kristine mean to you?
MR: I still am in awe. It feels like I have to pinch myself everytime. To me it is a dream come true! I remember that first concert photo moment so well, and back then I could only dream of the idea that one day I would be able to take portrait pictures of Liv. At the same time, it feels so natural to me. I always sent my concert pictures to Liv afterwards. I remember I took a shot of Liv during a MFVF show with a flame thrower in the background, which they later used for a Latin American tour poster. Liv and Michael asked me to take pictures of her for the new album, I could not believe what I read! Yet, it felt like it was meant to be. We have this creative flow; we feel each other very well. And we trust each other, there is this connection between us that makes it so natural. It has been a true highlight in my photography career, and I can promise you, there will be more in the future! So, in short: it means the world to me!

EM: What do you want to capture in your photos of Liv Kristine? How do you want to show her to the world?
MR: This one is easy: I would love to portrait her as the powerful, strong, beautiful and loving, special person that she is. As true to person and as pure as possible. I really feel that the cover photo of the album shows that strength! Like a phoenix risen from the ashes. I only knew the album title beforehand, and we talked a bit about the concept. On the album cover you only see half of her face. That idea came up after I got home and started editing. For some reason, to me it feels more interesting this way. The way she looks right into your soul, really amazes me. You can feel a lot of different emotions, which do come out through the music on this album and also through this picture. At first, we thought the pictures we took in the lake would be the album cover, but afterwards we felt this was more fitting.

EM: What did Liv Kristine ask you to do in the photo shoot? What was her idea for the session?
MR: Liv poses very naturally. She knows what works for her and what doesn’t. Yet, she also asked me if her poses she did were working for me, but I soon found out that when we were just talking to each other our ideas came out naturally. I took some of our best shots, when she wasn’t even aware of the fact I took a picture. It were the pure, in between moments. We shared some ideas we found on pinterest, but the ideas came naturally as we went shooting. I brought an inflatable pool with me as a back up plan, but we used it anyway because it brought up some ideas and we actually used those pictures also. Also the fact that the cover photo of the album was shot at her own balcony, made it very special for us both afterwards. The overall feeling she was hoping to create was “Magical”. I am very curious how it turned out on the album artworks.

EM: Can you tell me some anecdotes about the photo shoot with Liv Kristine?
MR: Well, the first day, I just arrived at the airport in Zurich, she picked me up and we instantly had deep conversations. We arrived at her home, went for a walk first. So I was able to ground myself. Then Liv told me she found a nice place at the lake in Lucerne. We all got in the car with some boxes of clothing. When we were there, I soon noticed I had to be in the water to take her pictures. At some point I was up to my upper stomach in the water. Afterwards we needed to drive back home. And Liv gave me some of her clean and dry underwear. And she said: “now you can say: I have worn one of Liv Kristine’s thongs!” I will never forget that of course!

strong>EM: What is the best and the worst thing to work with Liv Kristine?
MR: The best and the worst, are the same thing, like a paradox. The best thing is that, for me, she is a true icon, a dear friend, and even the fact that it felt so natural, it also felt so insane! I had to pinch myself a lot of times, like: this is real Mariël! So, the worst part was that I had to really get myself together during the first day, to not be overwhelmed during the shooting. So I was able to think of poses, angles, settings etc. so the next time I will be more prepared for that. And, being a bit of a perfectionist, the idea that as soon as I send out my edited pictures, I had no control over which ones they were choosing or sending out to edit further, for the album layout and retouching, I had to let them go… that was a strange feeling for me haha!

EM: What would your dream photo session with Liv Kristine?
MR: We already are talking about our next session. Now that I know what I’m about to experience with her, I think that the next time, I will feel more relaxed and more confident about myself. I know now, what we can achieve. So, my dream photo session, is basically in an environment which feels natural and safe for Liv, where she can be herself 100%. It would be great if we can use natural lighting again, no flashes, no artificial stuff. I would love to have an environment which suits her ideas for this album. I already have ideas, so does Liv, and I am sure we will be successful again! We know we can blend our ideas and create something together!

EM: What’s your opinion about the album ‘River of diamonds’?
MR: When I heard that Liv was working with Tommy, who also works with bands like Long Night and October Burns Black (which I love both), my heart jumped! I just knew instantly that this album would be amazing. And, from what I have heard, I love the sound and feeling of the album, a bit “Sisters of Mercy-esque” melancholy taste. You will be able to recognize the style of Liv’s song “Love Decay” and Long Night in there, bringing you back to earlier gothic-like tracks whilst still sounding fresh! My immortal Day is one of my favorites and I heard that song live in Nagold last year! It shows how Liv has grown into this strong, and truly happy person, who believes in herself, she is on fire on this one!

EM: What made you fall in love with Liv Kristine’s music?
MR: For me it’s all about the distinctive sound of her voice. It’s very delicate, angelic, yet strong. Classical, yet fresh, you immediately hear it’s her voice. Liv’s lyrics are like poems, which sometimes you have to figure out what they actually mean, to her or to you personally. The lyrics have a depth. I fell in love with the magic Leaves’ Eyes once had during her time with the band. That magic continues in her solo music, especially in her last albums which I love the most (Libertine, Vervain and River of Diamonds) along with the song “3am”. Liv has something unique about her, which she delivers every time. In Theatre of Tragedy, in Leaves’ Eyes, her solo work, but also in one-time collaborations with bands who invite her to sing. To me that is something really special.

EM: I think Liv has something very important that not all artists have because many of the people around her are friends among us. I mean, Liv, Michael, Rocco, you, me, all the people that run her official fan clubs and communities and a lot of fans are friends between us and you see that every year at Nagold and I think that makes Liv Kristine stronger as a person and as an artist. Do you agree with me? How do you see this spiderweb?
MR: Yes! I agree! Liv has this power to bring different people together, because we all love one thing, which is her music! I agree with Rocco: she has a close fanbase, because she is close to her fans. She also incorporates her fans to her work, also. And she creates a tight family this way. As soon as you walk into her heart, you walk into this family. The support is amazing, the conversations in Nagold after the show are deep, and the connection is close. It truly feels like a tight family. I am so grateful for that.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): ¿Cómo conociste la música de Liv Kristine y cómo fue que os hicisteis amigas?
MARIËL ROHRBACH (MR): En 2007 asistí a un concierto de Kamelot en Países Bajos y Leaves’ Eyes era uno de sus teloneros. Fue el primer concierto de Metal al que iba. En cuanto Liv subió al escenario me miró directamente a los ojos (como siempre hace con el público) y quedé prendada de ella. Creo que los fans de Liv se sentirán identificados cuando digo que la primera vez que ves a Liv Kristine es una experiencia mágica. Te cautiva y te lleva en su viaje por Noruega a través de su música. Esa noche llevé mi pequeña cámara de bolsillo conmigo. Durante el concierto de Kamelot me fijé en Liv, que estaba sentada sola en el stand de merchandising y quise acercarme a ella. Así lo hicimos, hablamos un rato y recuerdo lo dulce, acogedora y elegante que era. Nos hicimos una foto juntas y desde entonces empecé a seguir a Leaves’ Eyes. Me enteré que actuarían en un festival en Países Bajos meses después y allí que fuimos. Durante el concierto me señaló y me reconoció. Me abrumó esa sensación ¿cómo podía acordarse de mí? Durante el festival hice más fotos con la misma cámara de bolsillo y en ese momento supe que había encontrado mi nueva vocación.
Después compré mi primera cámara DSLR con un buen objetivo para conciertos y empecé a pensar cómo hacerlo. Ese mismo año, Leaves’ Eyes actuó por primera vez con el barco vikingo en Metal Female Voices Fest y estoy muy agradecida por haber podido estar allí ¡incluso reconozco mi voz en las grabaciones (risas)!
Desde entonces fuimos a más conciertos, nos hicimos más fotos en varios países y por el camino nos hemos encontrado muchas veces ¡y hemos conocido a gente encantadora durante esos conciertos! Nos convertimos en un grupo de amigos muy unido, e incluso conocí a mi actual pareja a través de esos momentos.

EM: ¿Qué significa para tí poder trabajar con Liv Kristine?
MR: Sigo sin salir de mi asombro. Es como si tuviera que pellizcarme cada vez porque ¡para mí es un sueño hecho realidad! Recuerdo muy bien el momento que tomé mi primera fotografía de concierto y entonces solo podía soñar con la idea de retratar a Liv. Al mismo tiempo, también es algo natural para mí. Siempre le enviaba fotos de los conciertos a Liv y recuerdo que hice una durante MFVF con un lanzallamas de fondo, que más tarde utilizaron para un cartel de la gira latinoamericana.
Liv y Michael me pidieron que hiciera fotos para el nuevo disco ¡no podía creer lo que leía! Sin embargo, sentí que estaba destinada a ello. Tenemos un flujo creativo muy grande, nos sentimos muy bien y confiamos la una en la otra. Tenemos una conexión que lo hace todo muy natural. Ha sido un punto álgido en mi carrera y te prometo que habrá más en el futuro. En resumen: ¡significa mucho para mí!

EM: ¿Qué quieres capturar en tus fotos de Liv? ¿Cómo quieres mostrarla al mundo?
MR: Esta es fácil: me encantaría retratarla como la persona poderosa, fuerte, hermosa, cariñosa y especial. Tan fiel a su persona y tan pura como sea posible. Realmente siento que la foto de la portada de ‘River of diamonds’ muestra esa fuerza, como un ave fénix que renace de sus cenizas.
Solo conocía el título de antemano y hablamos un poco del concepto. En la portada solo se ve la mitad de su cara y la idea surgió cuando llegué a su casa y empecé a editar. Por alguna razón, me parece más interesante así. La forma en que te mira directamente al alma me asombra. Puedes sentir un montón de emociones diferentes que salen a través de la música de este disco y también a través de esa foto. Al principio, pensamos que las fotos que tomamos en el lago serían la portada del disco, pero después pensamos que ésta sería más adecuada.

EM: ¿Qué te pidió Liv para la sesión de fotos? ¿Qué idea tenía ella?
MR: Liv posa con mucha naturalidad. Sabe lo que le funciona y lo que no. Sin embargo, también me preguntaba si las poses que ella hacía eran buenas para mí y pronto descubrí que cuando, simplemente, hablábamos nuestras ideas surgían de forma natural. Hice algunas de nuestras mejores fotos cuando ella ni siquiera se daba cuenta de que las había hecho; eran los momentos más puros. Compartimos algunas ideas que encontramos en Pinterest pero las ideas surgieron de forma natural a medida que íbamos haciendo fotos. Llevé una piscina hinchable como plan alternativo que igualmente utilizamos porque nos aportó algunas ideas y también utilizamos esas fotos. Además, el hecho de que la foto de la portada del álbum se tomara en su propio balcón la hizo muy especial para las dos. La sensación general que ella quería crear era «mágica». Tengo mucha curiosidad por ver cómo ha quedado en las ilustraciones del álbum.

EM: ¿Puedes contarme alguna anécdota de la sesión de fotos con Liv?
MR: Pues bien, el primer día, cuando llegué al aeropuerto de Zúrich, me recogió y al instante empezamos a mantener conversaciones profundas. Llegamos a su casa y primero fuimos a dar un paseo y así pude poner los pies en tierra. Luego Liv me dijo que había encontrado un bonito lugar en el lago de Lucerna. Subimos al coche con algunas cajas de ropa. Cuando estuvimos allí, pronto me di cuenta que tenía que estar en el agua para tomar las fotos. En algún momento, el agua me llegaba más arriba del estómago. Luego teníamos que volver a casa y Liv me dio algo de su ropa interior, limpia y seca y me dijo “ahora puedes decir que has llevado uno de los tangas de Liv Kristine”. Por supuesto, nunca lo olvidaré.

EM: ¿Qué es lo mejor y lo peor de trabajar con Liv Kristine?
MR: Lo mejor y lo peor, son la misma cosa, como una paradoja. Lo mejor es que, para mí, es un verdadero icono, una amiga muy querida, y todo es muy natural ¡y eso me parece una locura! Tuve que pellizcarme muchas veces, como diciendo: ¡esta es de verdad Mariël! Lo peor fue que el primer día tuve que controlarme para no agobiarme durante la sesión. Y así pude pensar en poses, ángulos, ajustes, etc., de modo que la próxima vez estaré más preparada para ello. Y, siendo un poco perfeccionista, la idea de que tan pronto como envié mis fotos editadas, no tuve ningún control sobre cuáles estaban eligiendo para el diseño del álbum y su retoque, tuve que dejarlas ir… ¡fue una sensación extraña para mí jaja!

EM: ¿Cómo sería tu sesión de fotos soñada con Liv Kristine?
MR: Ya estamos hablando de nuestra próxima sesión. Ahora que sé lo que voy a experimentar con ella, creo que la próxima vez estaré más relajada y más segura de mí misma. Ahora sé lo que podemos conseguir. Así que, mi sesión de fotos de ensueño es básicamente en un ambiente en el que Liv se sienta natural y segura, donde ella puede ser ella misma 100%. Sería estupendo si pudiéramos volver a utilizar iluminación natural, sin flashes ni complementos artificiales. Me encantaría tener un entorno que se adapte a sus ideas para este álbum. Yo ya tengo ideas, Liv también, ¡y estoy segura de que volveremos a tener éxito! Sabemos que podemos combinar nuestras ideas y crear algo juntas.

EM: ¿Qué opinas de ‘River of diamonds’?
MR: Cuando me enteré de que Liv estaba trabajando con Tommy, que también lo hace con grupos como Long Night y October Burns Black (ambos me encantan) ¡me dio un vuelco el corazón! Supe al instante que este disco sería increíble. Y, por lo que he escuchado, me encanta el sonido y el sentimiento del álbum, un poco «Sisters of Mercy-niano» de sabor melancólico. Podrás reconocer el estilo de la canción de Liv «Love Decay» y Long Night ahí dentro, ¡te trae de vuelta a temas góticos anteriores sin dejar de sonar frescos! “My immortal Day» es una de mis favoritas y ¡escuché esa canción en directo en Nagold el año pasado! Muestra cómo Liv se ha convertido en una persona fuerte y verdaderamente feliz que cree en sí misma, ¡está on fire en esta canción!

EM: ¿Qué te hizo enamorarte de la música de Liv?
MR: Para mí, lo más importante es el sonido inconfundible de su voz. Es muy delicada y angelical, pero fuerte. Clásica pero fresca, enseguida distingues su voz. Las letras de Liv son como poemas, y a veces tienes que averiguar qué significan realmente, para ella o para ti personalmente. Las letras tienen profundidad. Me enamoré de la magia que tuvo Leaves’ Eyes durante su época con la banda. Esa magia continúa en su música en solitario, especialmente en sus últimos álbumes, que son los que más me gustan (‘Libertine’, ‘Vervain’ y ‘River of Diamonds’), junto con la canción «3am». Liv tiene algo único que siempre ofrece. En Theatre of Tragedy, en Leaves’ Eyes, en su trabajo en solitario, y también en colaboraciones puntuales con grupos que la invitan a cantar. Para mí, eso es algo realmente especial.

EM: Creo que Liv tiene algo muy importante que no sucede con muchos artistas y es que tiene mucha gente a su alrededor que somos amigos entre nosotros. Me refiero a Liv, Michael, Mariel, tú, yo y toda la gente que gestiona sus clubes de fans oficiales, comunidades en redes sociales y muchos fans como queda claro año tras año en Nagold y creo que eso hace a Liv Kristine más fuerte, como persona y como artista ¿estás de acuerdo conmigo ¿cómo ves tú esa tela de araña?
MR: ¡Sí, estoy de acuerdo! Liv tiene el poder de unir a diferentes personas, porque todos amamos una cosa ¡su música! Estoy de acuerdo con Rocco: tiene una gran base de fans, porque ella está cerca de ellos. También incorpora a sus fans a su trabajo. Y así crea una familia muy unida. En cuanto entras en su corazón, entras en su familia. El apoyo es increíble, las conversaciones en Nagold después del concierto son profundas y la conexión es estrecha. Realmente nos sentimos como una familia unida y estoy muy agradecida por ello.

It has been a long time since Liv Kristine published her last album ‘Vervain’ and many other works after it, on many different levels. Liv Kristine has experienced a change and she’s not the same anymore, both as a person and as an artist. Nor even her life course remained unchanged since then. ‘River of diamonds’ marks a new beginning within her recognizable figure and should be a moment of celebration for her and her followers.
Surrounded by friends and people of her trust, Liv publishes an album full of truth, pure essence and honesty to come back to settle her career.
In this interview with Liv, we broke down ‘River of diamonds’, we talked about the Nagold event, other concerts, fans and friends, and all with our eyes on the launch of the album and with our eagerness to see each other again. This is how Liv Kristine speaks about 2023.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): First of all, how are you? What’s about your personal and daily life right now? How do you feel living in Switzerland?
LIV KRISTINE (LK): Thank you so much, my dear friend. I am doing well, my family is doing well. I enjoy my „9-5“ Job with children (mostly, with special needs) at a Swiss primary school, moreover, having the time to really enjoy the release-process of „River of Diamonds“. My life has calmed down a lot since I left Germany a year ago in many ways, which was necessary after a period of a really turbulent life situation. I now wake up every morning with a huge smile on my face and in my heart, with an emotion of gratitude and freedom, being in the here and now.

EM: How was your latest show at Die Halle in Reichenbach?
LK: It was a wonderful experience. Such a lovely audience and organising team. I think the audience enjoyed our new setlist. I am lucky to have both a long-time audience and a band always backing me up. And of course I am lucky to have the endless support of Tommy Olsson who composed this outstanding and most authentic album, of my amazing husband, Michael, who is the one who really helped me to find courage to open up my heart again as an artist, to take control of my artistic values and rights, to release my sixth solo album with my trusted team, to get back on stage. After nine years. I thank my audience for being incredibly patient. Our next show is in Langenthal, Switzerland, on the very release date, 21.4.2023.

EM: “Gravity” and “Serenity” are your new classics: You had both songs on previous works (‘Skylight’ EP and ‘Have courage dear heart’). What is the reason to include again these songs in an album?
LK: Eroc (mix and master) and Tommy, including myself, had that shared feeling that these tracks still have to be heard by music-lovers around the world. To me, „Gravity“ is a composition that kind of got manifested through me. It still feels like a magic moment when I listen to it or play it live. It shines the frequency of the universe, that divine greatness and endlessness, moreover, that natural attachment and attraction which gravity provides in space and everywhere else. Tommy Olsson created something huge there for which I have no words, because the words and the melodies really found me.

EM: Osten Bergoy, Fernando Ribeiro, your sister Carmen, your husband Michael… this is your album with the major number of collaborations. Why did you decide to take all of them on the ‘River of diamonds’?
LK: The music always decides if only my own or other voices need to be present to express the feeling of the song and the lyrics. Østen is the singer of one of my favourite bands, Long Night, as well as Tommy’s friend. Fernando is a long-time dear friend who has supported me strongly after the unforeseen split with Leaves’ Eyes. Carmen, my dear sister, has always been by my side and we share the same kind of Norwegian, black humour, so there’s a lot of laughing whenever we meet. „Love Me High“ is our song, feeling blessed by life itself. These three pieces of music longed for these three special voices. Rocco, my dear friend, inspired me to cover „True Colours“, which fit to both our life situations – coming home to our true selves, thus he re-recorded it for me. Michael is a phenomena – he neither sang on a stage, nor in a studio. He never ever even thought about it, and he never had singing lessons. As his dear father passed away last summer, he found a lot of healing in John Lord’s compositions. We drove to the studio and recorded „Pictured Within“ in memory of my father-in-law. First and second take and it was manifested. It was an unbelievably beautiful moment.

EM: To be completely honest, when I read that your husband would sing on the album, I thought he would do it with growls… he looks like a tough guy, isn’t he? Ha, ha! Surprisingly, he has a beautiful voice!!! “Pictured within” and Michael are the greatest surprises of the ‘River of diamonds’ for me, without any doubt.
LK: Thank you from the heart. That means a lot to both of us. As mentioned above, having Michael’s voice, which comes from the heart, on my album is truly special. I know he looks like a really tall, big Danish Viking, however, I never met a human being with such a great empathy and inner clarity, which you can her in his voice.

EM: I’d like to ask you about “Shaolin me”. I try to relate this song to Shaolin Temple and their painful resistance. Would you concur with me? Does it refer to your past? Or maybe to your life philosophy, your resistance to pain and your inner strength?
LK: Yes, indeed, you describe it with the right words. The monks use a.o. Qi Gong and a special method of breathing with the lower abdomen to transform their bodies into armor. This allows them to withstand powerful blows, including those from dangerous and sometimes sharp objects. These abilities stem from breath and awareness. I have learned to become more aware of my soul-life through meditation, kundalini yoga and Tai Chi, Qi Gong etc. over a period of 25 years, however, at those times when I felt that life was a challenge, I intensified my meditation practices to rebuild resilience and courage, moreover, to gain mental clarity which is so important when your mind is full and blocked due to distracting circumstances. Shaolin monk training begins by trading material pleasures and worldly distractions for an ascetic lifestyle of study, physical exercise and meditation. And, above all, self-discipline is required to razor-sharpen their minds and body strength. I find the life and studies of Shaolin monks fascinating. The line in my lyrics „In this body so light, see it walk on snow without sinking in“ describes the inner frequency for me to be strong, free and clear-minded.

EM: I love the rhythm and the emotion behind “No make-up”, I think it’s an absolutely mag I love the rhythm and the emotion behind “No make-up”, I think it’s an utterly magical song. When you were no make-up is like your body naked, like something pure without secrets… Is this what you meant with the lyrics? I’m absolutely fascinated with your lyrics and the album concept.
LK: Thank you so much for pointing this out – yes, these lyrics are kind of special in both rhythm and constellation. I never sang in this way before, but it feels really freeing and creative. It pics up daily life and those thoughts entering your mind from the moment you wake up like simultaneous high-speed trains of thoughts, which trigger emotions, which cause chemical reactions in your body, which trigger new thoughts….It’s your monkey-mind. Then, as a contrast, what really plays a vital role in life is the love-relationship with yourself and how you treat others. Just that pure frequency, that pure intention of unconditional love towards yourself and those persons who meet you with an open heart and compassion. That’s the place or the soul-space where you can find silence and authenticity, where no make-up and conditioning is needed. I think it is of vital importance to shift perspective sometimes, to step out of your mind to be able to actually take control of your mind, that means learning to choose what you think and feel. This is such an important step and revelation in the process of personal development and of self-love. Moreover, you will discover that there is self-love and freedom in the acceptance of knowing that life can be both – broken and beauty. That period of time which „happens“ between what we call birth and death, is called life, with all its broken and beautiful moments of experience. Life is exactly that – „Imperfectly perfect“, which are the final words in this song.

EM: I still remember how impressive was “Maligna” in Nagold and your speech about a new beginning! You decided you play the première of this song but, why did you choose “Maligna” and “Our immortal day” for the première?
LK: „Maligna“ is a hymn to everybody who have experienced any kind of oppression or/and abuse of any kind. This song has a strong message – I want to give people the courage and strength to clarify their boundaries, to say NO to toxic personalities and treatment, and I guess it’s the first time I have ever included „fuck you“ in any of my lyrics or poems. „Our Immortal Day“ is a beautiful follow-up to „Love Decay“ which people always request at my concerts. „Our Immortal Day“ describes a soul-relationship. That frequency of love is meant to be. It’s unique, it’s yin-yang, it’s unconditional and divine.

EM: Both “Pictured within” and “True colours” piano covers are absolutely thrilling and in perfect match with your voice. I truly love your passion when you sing this kind of ballad, as well as “The rarest flower”, too. What’s special for you in these songs and when you are alone with the piano?
LK: The piano asks for this feeling and sound of intimacy. It feels like melting with the sound of the instrument. My voice just finds this special resonance with a piano ballade.

EM: Rocco Cogliati from Italy had been working with you in “True colours” and he was your special guest in the “Enter my religion” reissue. What’s special about his talent?
LK: Rocco is a dear friend and an amazing artist himself. He creates this space of intimacy when he plays the piano and when he sings that I just love. There’s so much space and tenderness in his artistic work. Sometimes he passes through Switzerland on his journeys and we get to sit down for a beer a two, which I really appreciate.

EM: I think that the front cover of the ‘River of diamonds’ is absolutely amazing, probably the best one in your solo career. What’s the concept behind this front
cover with only half of your face?
LK: The cover and the artwork are based on ideas which were developed with my husband and my beautiful friend Mariel Rohrbach. We knew about her talent and asked her to come and stay with us in Lucerne for a weekend to see if we could manifest our ideas on her camera. All this turned out to be a perfect match.

EM: What can you tell us about the experience of working with Mariel Röhrbach? I think she is an amazing photographer and a lovely woman!
LK: Yes, indeed. We soon need to book another flight to Switzerland – Mariel is amazing and she is able to catch exactly that moment when I’m about to forget that we’re actually working and taking photos.

EM: Unlike previous years, Nagold 2023 event will take place in November, not in December. This seems to be a requirement imposed by the organizer and also because December is a complicated month for everyone. Could you announce the official date for the show?
LK: Yes, the date is Saturday, 25th November, 2023. (I hope you will make it to Nagold, dear Marc!)

EM: Back in December, we were talking about the chance of doing a European Tour to promote the ‘River of diamonds’. Is it still an option? If so, would it be before or after summer?
LK: There will be a few single shows this spring, summer and fall. I hope that we will get the chance to play more shows in connection with the release of „River of Diamonds“.

EM: Metalville is your new record label. How is it to work with them? In my opinion, they are not the biggest label, but they do a great job with the bands in their
roster.
LK: My husband and I find open and frequent communication utterly important when it comes to work and cooperation. My artistic work is half-a-lifetime, highly personal and authentic, and the label that is promoting my releases has to resonate with my clear intention and with my personal situation. I love composing, singing and performing, but I also love teaching and coaching. The guys of Metalville give me this trust which is of vital importance to both Michael and me.
