25 de noviembre… sí, noviembre. Liv lleva dos años sorprendiéndonos con el concierto anual de Nagold. En 2022 fue la primera vez que se hacía en sábado (hasta entonces siempre había sido en viernes); y en 2023, por primera vez, el concierto tiene lugar en noviembre y no en diciembre. Hasta ahora, Alte Seminarturnhalle siempre programaba su actuación como último evento antes de navidad.
¿El motivo? Diciembre siempre es un mes muy estresante para todos por la llegada de la navidad y por los trabajos de todos, recordemos que Liv trabaja de profesora de educación especial y para ella el viernes es un día laborable y además debe viajar de Suiza a Alemania. Había dudas de qué tal funcionaría el evento y cierto es que faltaron algunos ilustres fans y amigos de Liv como Anna Finke, Adam Brown, Chris Smiedi, Uli o Tina, pero el concierto fue un éxito absoluto.

Pero empecemos por el principio…
El 4 de octubre me escribió Märiel Rohrbach y me preguntó si iba a ir a Nagold este año. Siendo noviembre era complicado por cuestiones varias y tenía casi descartado asistir. Decidí mirar el precio de los vuelos por curiosidad y descubrí que, por 65 euros, ida y vuelta, podía viajar cuando el año anterior, en diciembre, pagué más de 150 euros. El precio del hotel, muy similar, 70 euros. El calentón fue en aumento y tras varias gestiones en casa y en el trabajo decidí volver a Nagold.
El siguiente paso era, como cada año, entrevistar a Liv para saber la última hora del concierto y dar a conocer toda su actualidad. Y mientras, Liv me mandó el setlist del concierto. Lo leí y lo estudié. Debo reconocer que me sorprendió. Es cierto que tiene nuevo disco en la calle, ‘River of diamonds’, y que tiene que promocionarlo; pero también es el 25 aniversario de ‘Aègis’. Quizá esperaba más presencia de éste. Tampoco había temas tradicionales como otros años, cuando cantaba “Pie Jesu” y “Ave María”. Desde el respeto y la confianza que tengo con ella le pregunté por ello y me dijo que tenía razón, a lo que añadió “te cantaré “Ave María”.
La entrevista tuvo repercusión entre sus fans, aunque si he de ser honesto nunca sé cuánta gente lee lo que escribo más allá de los likes en redes sociales y alguna estadística de Google Analytics.

Llegó el día de viajar a Nagold y en esta ocasión los horarios de mis vuelos fueron excelentes, tanto a la ida como a la vuelta. Madrugué, mucho, porque mi vuelo salía a las 06h30 pero eso me permitió hacer turismo durante unas horas por Stuttgart. Cierto que el Weinachtmarkt (mercado de navidad) aun no estaba abierto, de hecho, lo estaban montando todo, pero Königstrasse y sus calles adyacentes siempre resultan un paseo muy agradable y el lugar perfecto para comprar unos detalles a mi mujer y mis hijos. El año pasado descubrí la tienda de discos Second Hand y en esta ocasión decidí repetir experiencia allí, un lugar en el que puedes pasarte horas buceando entre vinilos y cd de todos los estilos; imposible salir con las manos vacías. El Centro Comercial Müller posee otra interesante sección musical, todo lo contrario que Saturn, un templo en el pasado que ha quedado relegado a un enclave totalmente prescindible.
Me fui para Nagold, sin prisa, disfrutando del viaje en transporte público y del paisaje.
Este año me alojé en Arthotel, un hotel pequeñito, escondido pero muy acogedor. Quedé muy contento con Adler el año anterior, pero Arthotel resultó la opción más económica para una sola persona. Sin duda, dos excelentes opciones y muy cerquita de Alte Seminarturnhalle.
Era pronto aun, aunque ya de noche, así que aproveché para descansar un poco en el hotel y cargar la batería de mi teléfono y sobre las 17h30 salí paseando hacia Alte Seminarturnhalle. No hacía mucho frío, unos 2 grados positivos, y aunque amenazaba nieve, finalmente no tuvimos la suerte del año anterior.

En el hall de la entrada de atrás me encontré con Liv, que justo salía por la puerta y tras un gran abrazo nos metimos para dentro. Saludé efusivamente a Michael, su marido, que estaba montando el stand del merch, y nos fuimos a su backstage, nos pusimos cómodos y charlamos y charlamos, nos pusimos al día y dejamos que nuestra complicidad y nuestra amistad hicieran el resto al abordar varias cuestiones muy personales. Liv sabe lo importante que esa charla fue para mí en el terreno personal y emocional. En estas llegaron Rocco y Angelo, de Milán, y entablamos una conversación interesante a la par que entretenida.
Poco antes que empezara el concierto tomamos asiento y decidimos que nuestra mesa fuera una especie de ONU con Sandra, Elvin y Pascal, venidos de Bélgica, por un lado, Rocco y Angelo llegados de Italia por otro, y yo desde España por otro. Nunca nos hubiéramos conocido de no ser por Liv.
El público iba entrando a la sala en un ambiente muy relajado, sin prisas, sin empujones y conscientes que íbamos a ver algo más que un concierto, una tradición. Pronto vi entrar a Märiel y Frans, su pareja, a Vera y Marco, y a Chantal y Joost y sus hijos. Somos esa familia que se junta cada año para navidad, bueno en esta ocasión un poquito antes.

Projekt Ju salieron a escena para presentar ‘Neuland’ y dieron un concierto muy armónico de un Gothic Rock muy elegante y personal en el que sobresale la voz de Jens-Christian Usner. El repertorio incluyó casi todos los temas de ‘Neuland’ como el que da título, “Folge der zahl” o “Mephista“ y además nos obsequiaron con una versión del clásico “She sells sanctuary” que The Cult publicaron en su segundo disco, ‘Love’, de 1985.

Un sonido nítido y cristalino es necesario para que su propuesta cobre el sentido que proponen en disco y en Nagold lo tuvieron. Lástima que algunos coros no puedan llevarlos al directo. Pese a ello Projekt Ju dieron un concierto muy serio y se presentaron como una banda con un gran futuro por delante. No les pierdas la pista porque van a dar qué hablar.

Y cuando creíamos que iba a aparecer Liv, Roland Bliesener, teclista de Liv, montó en el centro del escenario su teclado para ofrecernos un repertorio especial. Es la primera vez que Liv Kristine tiene dos teloneros y, ciertamente, me pareció una decisión muy apropiada, aunque yo hubiera cambiado el orden de las actuaciones por cuanto Projekt Ju tienen un estilo más cercano a Liv.

“Vogelfrei” o “Glückscent – Diebe” son dos de los temas con los que nos deleitó el bueno de Roland en un concierto muy agradable y disfrutable.

Y llegó el momento de Liv Kristine. El clima que se genera en Nagold es inigualable con todo el público sentado, con posibilidad de cenar antes del concierto y con ganas de disfrutar de un evento muy cercano, con una artista que no deja de sonreír e interactuar con el público que, a fin de cuentas, se ha convertido, con el tiempo, en fans y amigos al mismo tiempo. No es fácil conseguir esa simbiosis entre los dos elementos principales del negocio de la música, artista y público.

Tras la introducción de rigor, “Shaolin Me” fue la encargada de inaugurar el repertorio como ya hiciera en los dos conciertos previos. A decir verdad, el primer tramo de concierto siguió el mismo orden que en Reichenbach unos meses atrás. Y a tenor de lo visto, cabe destacar que funciona pues el concierto tiene ritmo, alternancia de tempos y permiten a Liv calentar la voz y entregarse a la causa aun sabiendo la exigencia vocal del tramo final.

Pero volvamos al concierto, porque el inicio tranquilo y pausado de la canción, dio paso a un estribillo muy melódico que cantamos todos. Y tras ella, uno de sus nuevos himnos, “Maligna” que ya presentó el año pasado y si entonces gustó, ahora lo ha hecho mucho más. Un tema hecho para el directo cuya letra es tan significativa para Liv y que arrancó las primeras palmas y puso a bailar a algunos asistentes que se encontraban de pie, en los laterales del escenario.

Fue mientras Liv interpretaba “Maligna” que yo andaba haciendo fotos de un lado a otro, cuando vislumbré a Víctor, un amigo chileno con el que tenemos amistad hace casi 10 años y no nos conocíamos en persona. Víctor se encontraba trabajando en Alemania los últimos meses y decidió venir a Nagold a ver a Liv, con quien ha dado clases de canto y donde por fin pudimos conocernos en un encuentro maravilloso. Nos conocimos virtualmente gracias a la música de Liv y, finalmente, nos hemos conocido en persona, gracias a un concierto de Liv. Otra de esas maravillosas historias que solo suceden en Nagold.

“Image” siempre supone un punto de inflexión en el concierto, arranca la sonrisa de los fans, Liv se viene arriba y los pulsos se aceleran y es que las canciones de ‘Musique’ siempre han tenido muy buena acogida en los conciertos de Liv en solitario.

Liv decidió recuperar hace ya unos años “3AM” para el repertorio y me parece muy acertado que la interprete tras “Image” para no abandonar del todo la electrónica y para que sirva de transición a temas de una cadencia más pausada. Cuando presentó el tema, aprovechó para recordarnos que en marzo reedita su disco debut, ‘Deus ex machina’, que contará con un montón de material extra y algún invitado de lujo. Los die hard fans siempre agradecemos que mire atrás en su repertorio musical.

Pronto llega un trio de baladas y medios tempos con “Have courage dear heart”, la siempre celebrada “Siren” y “Gravity”.
“Machine” volvió a agitarnos, a engorilarnos y, a muchos, levantarse de sus sillas con el que fue el último tema de Theatre of Tragedy de la noche.

“Our inmortal day” recuperaba la senda de ‘River of diamonds’, disco que iba a copar el protagonismo del tramo final del concierto. Su Gothic Metal contagioso, seguido de “Love decay” supieron a gloria con una banda cada vez más cohesionada y un Sascha Dannenberger convertido en el complemento perfecto de Liv en el escenario. Porque Liv mima a sus músicos, pero con Sascha tiene una química especial y con solo una mirada o un gesto se entienden y se complementan a la perfección.

Llegaba otro de los momentos álgidos del concierto con “In the heart of Juliet” un tema que siempre ha sido de los favoritos de sus fans. Y tras él, quizá el tema que más me sorprendió del concierto, “In your blue eyes”. Se trata de una gran canción, pero en disco no me había atrapado al nivel de otras composiciones y, sin embargo, en directo gana muchísima intensidad, tanto en el estribillo, pomposo y melódico, como por la seductora voz de Liv.
Y esta primera parte del concierto terminaba con el title track de su último disco, “River of diamonds” que sonó fenomenal.

Pero el público de Nagold quería más. Y todos sabíamos que habría más. Y el bis no defraudó, es más, me atrevería a decir que es el más emotivo y personal de cuantos ha tocado Liv en su carrera. Me explico.
En cada reportaje que escribo sobre Nagold, cada año, destaco que es un evento muy familiar, donde nos reunimos muchos amigos de Liv, que hemos creado unos lazos y unas amistades que hacen que este concierto sea tanto un evento personal como musical. Es en ese contexto en el que se enmarca este bis.

La vuelta al escenario de Liv y sus chicos tuvo como punto de partida “Gabriella’s song”, la banda sonora de la película ‘As It Is In Heaven‘ (en español ‘Como en el cielo’ y en alemán ‘Wie im himmel’) y que dedicó a Fred, un amigo suyo, y al que dio una carta desde el escenario. Os contextualizo la escena: cada año Fred y su esposa Chrissy acuden a Nagold a ver a Liv Kristine. Se trata de un matrimonio ya mayor (que no viejos) que, ataviados con ropas góticas, disfrutan del concierto, bailan, sonríen y destilan amor por los cuatro costados. No viene al caso explicar la intrahistoria de esta dedicatoria, pero sí diré que fue algo tan especial y emotivo que Liv, mientras cantaba, luchaba por contener sus lágrimas. Sin duda, el momento cumbre de la noche.

Llegó “Norwegian lovesong” que siempre es emotiva porque habla de su tierra madre y se convirtió en otro momento especial y delicado porque su amiga Tara Grey había venido desde New Jersey expresamente para cantar con ella esta noche y la interpretación fue absolutamente deliciosa. Tara canta las canciones de Liv en Estados Unidos y ha sido un sueño verlas juntas encima del escenario. Ojalá no sea la última vez.

Y cerró con “Ave Maria” que dedicó a Marc, un fan español, colaborador, amigo especial y con el que trabaja en tantos proyectos promocionales, de gestión de fan clubs y de medios de comunicación. Sí, me la dedicó a mí y yo no sabía dónde meterme; consiguió emocionarme y sonrojarme hasta hacerme llorar. Motivo emocional aparte, “Ave María” supo a gloria y Liv alcanzó un nivel superlativo a nivel vocal.
Y el concierto terminó tras más de hora y media, con el público queriendo más pero contento y satisfecho.

¿Y qué pasó entonces? Que después del concierto empieza el after party donde todos charlamos, reímos, bebemos, nos emocionamos y nos abrazamos, donde conocemos gente nueva y donde estamos con Liv hasta altas horas de la madrugada porque nadie nos dice que nos vayamos, porque los organizadores saben del clima tan especial que se genera en Alte Seminarturnhalle y porque Liv es una artista importante allí.

Se acercaron a saludarme Marvin Römisch, estudiante de noruego de Liv, y Andrea, amiga también de Liv, a los que no tenía el placer de conocer. Dos personas encantadoras.
Me permitiréis que me guarde los detalles del post concierto y que os recomiende venir el año que viene porque el concierto es maravilloso y las amistades también.
De vuelta al hotel tocaba reposar tantas emociones y asimilar tantos momentos.

Al día siguiente, tras unas pocas horas de descanso me encantó pasear por el río Nagold y sus alrededores, relajado, sin prisa, gustándome y paseando cerca de la gente del pueblo que salía a la calle de buena mañana.
De vuelta al aeropuerto, conocí al conductor del autobús. Quiso el destino que no llevara monedas para pagar el billete y él no aceptara tarjeta. Al espetar un “mierda” en español, el chófer me preguntó de donde era en mi idioma. “De España, vengo de Barcelona” a lo que él me contestó “¿de qué parte de Barcelona?” “De El Prat” respondí yo; “yo soy de Vilanova”. Para los que no conozcan la zona, entre ambas poblaciones apenas hay 40 kilómetros. Compartimos un viaje en autobús maravilloso y conocí la historia de una familia que tuvo que trasladarse por motivos laborales. Era el final perfecto a un viaje inolvidable.

Cada año que vuelvo a Nagold pienso que no se puede superar el viaje anterior y siempre me equivoco así que estoy deseando poder volver en 2024 y volver a contaros mis aventuras y peripecias.
Por cierto, ahora que no nos lee nadie, sino hay cambios de última hora, Liv actuará en Alte Seminarturnhalle el 23 de noviembre de 2024.

MPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): How did you get to know the Liv Kristine’s music? How did you become close friends with Liv Kristine?
MARIËL ROHRBACH (MR): Back in 2007, I went to a Kamelot concert in the Netherlands, and Leaves’ Eyes was the second opening band that night. For me, it was the first metal concert I ever went to. As soon as Liv walked up the stage, and she looked me straight in my eyes (as she always does with the crowd) I was hooked. I think Liv’s fans can relate when I say that catching a glance of Liv for the first time whilst standing in the crowd is a magical experience. She captivates you, and takes you with her on her journey through Norway and through the music. I took my little pocket camera with me that night. During Kamelot’s show, I noticed Liv sitting at the little merch stand all on her own, and I wanted to go to her instead. So, we did, we talked for a bit and I remember how sweet, welcoming and graceful she was. We took a picture together. Then, I started to follow Leaves’ Eyes. I found out they would perform on a festival in NL a few months later. So we went. And then, she pointed at me during the show and she recognized me. I was overwhelmed by that feeling. How could she even remember us? During that festival, I took more pictures with the same pocket camera and that was the moment I knew, I had found my new calling, and afterwards I bought my first DSLR camera with a good “concertphotography” lens, and thought myself how to do it. That same year Leaves’ Eyes performed with the Viking Ship for the first time at the Metal Female Voices Fest, and I am grateful I was there, I even recognize my own voice in the recordings haha! Since then, we went to more concerts, me taking more pictures, in various countries, and via that way we got to meet many times, and meeting lovely people during those concerts! We became a tight group of friends. And I even met my current partner through those moments.

EM: What does working with Liv Kristine mean to you?
MR: I still am in awe. It feels like I have to pinch myself everytime. To me it is a dream come true! I remember that first concert photo moment so well, and back then I could only dream of the idea that one day I would be able to take portrait pictures of Liv. At the same time, it feels so natural to me. I always sent my concert pictures to Liv afterwards. I remember I took a shot of Liv during a MFVF show with a flame thrower in the background, which they later used for a Latin American tour poster. Liv and Michael asked me to take pictures of her for the new album, I could not believe what I read! Yet, it felt like it was meant to be. We have this creative flow; we feel each other very well. And we trust each other, there is this connection between us that makes it so natural. It has been a true highlight in my photography career, and I can promise you, there will be more in the future! So, in short: it means the world to me!

EM: What do you want to capture in your photos of Liv Kristine? How do you want to show her to the world?
MR: This one is easy: I would love to portrait her as the powerful, strong, beautiful and loving, special person that she is. As true to person and as pure as possible. I really feel that the cover photo of the album shows that strength! Like a phoenix risen from the ashes. I only knew the album title beforehand, and we talked a bit about the concept. On the album cover you only see half of her face. That idea came up after I got home and started editing. For some reason, to me it feels more interesting this way. The way she looks right into your soul, really amazes me. You can feel a lot of different emotions, which do come out through the music on this album and also through this picture. At first, we thought the pictures we took in the lake would be the album cover, but afterwards we felt this was more fitting.

EM: What did Liv Kristine ask you to do in the photo shoot? What was her idea for the session?
MR: Liv poses very naturally. She knows what works for her and what doesn’t. Yet, she also asked me if her poses she did were working for me, but I soon found out that when we were just talking to each other our ideas came out naturally. I took some of our best shots, when she wasn’t even aware of the fact I took a picture. It were the pure, in between moments. We shared some ideas we found on pinterest, but the ideas came naturally as we went shooting. I brought an inflatable pool with me as a back up plan, but we used it anyway because it brought up some ideas and we actually used those pictures also. Also the fact that the cover photo of the album was shot at her own balcony, made it very special for us both afterwards. The overall feeling she was hoping to create was “Magical”. I am very curious how it turned out on the album artworks.

EM: Can you tell me some anecdotes about the photo shoot with Liv Kristine?
MR: Well, the first day, I just arrived at the airport in Zurich, she picked me up and we instantly had deep conversations. We arrived at her home, went for a walk first. So I was able to ground myself. Then Liv told me she found a nice place at the lake in Lucerne. We all got in the car with some boxes of clothing. When we were there, I soon noticed I had to be in the water to take her pictures. At some point I was up to my upper stomach in the water. Afterwards we needed to drive back home. And Liv gave me some of her clean and dry underwear. And she said: “now you can say: I have worn one of Liv Kristine’s thongs!” I will never forget that of course!

strong>EM: What is the best and the worst thing to work with Liv Kristine?
MR: The best and the worst, are the same thing, like a paradox. The best thing is that, for me, she is a true icon, a dear friend, and even the fact that it felt so natural, it also felt so insane! I had to pinch myself a lot of times, like: this is real Mariël! So, the worst part was that I had to really get myself together during the first day, to not be overwhelmed during the shooting. So I was able to think of poses, angles, settings etc. so the next time I will be more prepared for that. And, being a bit of a perfectionist, the idea that as soon as I send out my edited pictures, I had no control over which ones they were choosing or sending out to edit further, for the album layout and retouching, I had to let them go… that was a strange feeling for me haha!

EM: What would your dream photo session with Liv Kristine?
MR: We already are talking about our next session. Now that I know what I’m about to experience with her, I think that the next time, I will feel more relaxed and more confident about myself. I know now, what we can achieve. So, my dream photo session, is basically in an environment which feels natural and safe for Liv, where she can be herself 100%. It would be great if we can use natural lighting again, no flashes, no artificial stuff. I would love to have an environment which suits her ideas for this album. I already have ideas, so does Liv, and I am sure we will be successful again! We know we can blend our ideas and create something together!

EM: What’s your opinion about the album ‘River of diamonds’?
MR: When I heard that Liv was working with Tommy, who also works with bands like Long Night and October Burns Black (which I love both), my heart jumped! I just knew instantly that this album would be amazing. And, from what I have heard, I love the sound and feeling of the album, a bit “Sisters of Mercy-esque” melancholy taste. You will be able to recognize the style of Liv’s song “Love Decay” and Long Night in there, bringing you back to earlier gothic-like tracks whilst still sounding fresh! My immortal Day is one of my favorites and I heard that song live in Nagold last year! It shows how Liv has grown into this strong, and truly happy person, who believes in herself, she is on fire on this one!

EM: What made you fall in love with Liv Kristine’s music?
MR: For me it’s all about the distinctive sound of her voice. It’s very delicate, angelic, yet strong. Classical, yet fresh, you immediately hear it’s her voice. Liv’s lyrics are like poems, which sometimes you have to figure out what they actually mean, to her or to you personally. The lyrics have a depth. I fell in love with the magic Leaves’ Eyes once had during her time with the band. That magic continues in her solo music, especially in her last albums which I love the most (Libertine, Vervain and River of Diamonds) along with the song “3am”. Liv has something unique about her, which she delivers every time. In Theatre of Tragedy, in Leaves’ Eyes, her solo work, but also in one-time collaborations with bands who invite her to sing. To me that is something really special.

EM: I think Liv has something very important that not all artists have because many of the people around her are friends among us. I mean, Liv, Michael, Rocco, you, me, all the people that run her official fan clubs and communities and a lot of fans are friends between us and you see that every year at Nagold and I think that makes Liv Kristine stronger as a person and as an artist. Do you agree with me? How do you see this spiderweb?
MR: Yes! I agree! Liv has this power to bring different people together, because we all love one thing, which is her music! I agree with Rocco: she has a close fanbase, because she is close to her fans. She also incorporates her fans to her work, also. And she creates a tight family this way. As soon as you walk into her heart, you walk into this family. The support is amazing, the conversations in Nagold after the show are deep, and the connection is close. It truly feels like a tight family. I am so grateful for that.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): ¿Cómo conociste la música de Liv Kristine y cómo fue que os hicisteis amigas?
MARIËL ROHRBACH (MR): En 2007 asistí a un concierto de Kamelot en Países Bajos y Leaves’ Eyes era uno de sus teloneros. Fue el primer concierto de Metal al que iba. En cuanto Liv subió al escenario me miró directamente a los ojos (como siempre hace con el público) y quedé prendada de ella. Creo que los fans de Liv se sentirán identificados cuando digo que la primera vez que ves a Liv Kristine es una experiencia mágica. Te cautiva y te lleva en su viaje por Noruega a través de su música. Esa noche llevé mi pequeña cámara de bolsillo conmigo. Durante el concierto de Kamelot me fijé en Liv, que estaba sentada sola en el stand de merchandising y quise acercarme a ella. Así lo hicimos, hablamos un rato y recuerdo lo dulce, acogedora y elegante que era. Nos hicimos una foto juntas y desde entonces empecé a seguir a Leaves’ Eyes. Me enteré que actuarían en un festival en Países Bajos meses después y allí que fuimos. Durante el concierto me señaló y me reconoció. Me abrumó esa sensación ¿cómo podía acordarse de mí? Durante el festival hice más fotos con la misma cámara de bolsillo y en ese momento supe que había encontrado mi nueva vocación.
Después compré mi primera cámara DSLR con un buen objetivo para conciertos y empecé a pensar cómo hacerlo. Ese mismo año, Leaves’ Eyes actuó por primera vez con el barco vikingo en Metal Female Voices Fest y estoy muy agradecida por haber podido estar allí ¡incluso reconozco mi voz en las grabaciones (risas)!
Desde entonces fuimos a más conciertos, nos hicimos más fotos en varios países y por el camino nos hemos encontrado muchas veces ¡y hemos conocido a gente encantadora durante esos conciertos! Nos convertimos en un grupo de amigos muy unido, e incluso conocí a mi actual pareja a través de esos momentos.

EM: ¿Qué significa para tí poder trabajar con Liv Kristine?
MR: Sigo sin salir de mi asombro. Es como si tuviera que pellizcarme cada vez porque ¡para mí es un sueño hecho realidad! Recuerdo muy bien el momento que tomé mi primera fotografía de concierto y entonces solo podía soñar con la idea de retratar a Liv. Al mismo tiempo, también es algo natural para mí. Siempre le enviaba fotos de los conciertos a Liv y recuerdo que hice una durante MFVF con un lanzallamas de fondo, que más tarde utilizaron para un cartel de la gira latinoamericana.
Liv y Michael me pidieron que hiciera fotos para el nuevo disco ¡no podía creer lo que leía! Sin embargo, sentí que estaba destinada a ello. Tenemos un flujo creativo muy grande, nos sentimos muy bien y confiamos la una en la otra. Tenemos una conexión que lo hace todo muy natural. Ha sido un punto álgido en mi carrera y te prometo que habrá más en el futuro. En resumen: ¡significa mucho para mí!

EM: ¿Qué quieres capturar en tus fotos de Liv? ¿Cómo quieres mostrarla al mundo?
MR: Esta es fácil: me encantaría retratarla como la persona poderosa, fuerte, hermosa, cariñosa y especial. Tan fiel a su persona y tan pura como sea posible. Realmente siento que la foto de la portada de ‘River of diamonds’ muestra esa fuerza, como un ave fénix que renace de sus cenizas.
Solo conocía el título de antemano y hablamos un poco del concepto. En la portada solo se ve la mitad de su cara y la idea surgió cuando llegué a su casa y empecé a editar. Por alguna razón, me parece más interesante así. La forma en que te mira directamente al alma me asombra. Puedes sentir un montón de emociones diferentes que salen a través de la música de este disco y también a través de esa foto. Al principio, pensamos que las fotos que tomamos en el lago serían la portada del disco, pero después pensamos que ésta sería más adecuada.

EM: ¿Qué te pidió Liv para la sesión de fotos? ¿Qué idea tenía ella?
MR: Liv posa con mucha naturalidad. Sabe lo que le funciona y lo que no. Sin embargo, también me preguntaba si las poses que ella hacía eran buenas para mí y pronto descubrí que cuando, simplemente, hablábamos nuestras ideas surgían de forma natural. Hice algunas de nuestras mejores fotos cuando ella ni siquiera se daba cuenta de que las había hecho; eran los momentos más puros. Compartimos algunas ideas que encontramos en Pinterest pero las ideas surgieron de forma natural a medida que íbamos haciendo fotos. Llevé una piscina hinchable como plan alternativo que igualmente utilizamos porque nos aportó algunas ideas y también utilizamos esas fotos. Además, el hecho de que la foto de la portada del álbum se tomara en su propio balcón la hizo muy especial para las dos. La sensación general que ella quería crear era «mágica». Tengo mucha curiosidad por ver cómo ha quedado en las ilustraciones del álbum.

EM: ¿Puedes contarme alguna anécdota de la sesión de fotos con Liv?
MR: Pues bien, el primer día, cuando llegué al aeropuerto de Zúrich, me recogió y al instante empezamos a mantener conversaciones profundas. Llegamos a su casa y primero fuimos a dar un paseo y así pude poner los pies en tierra. Luego Liv me dijo que había encontrado un bonito lugar en el lago de Lucerna. Subimos al coche con algunas cajas de ropa. Cuando estuvimos allí, pronto me di cuenta que tenía que estar en el agua para tomar las fotos. En algún momento, el agua me llegaba más arriba del estómago. Luego teníamos que volver a casa y Liv me dio algo de su ropa interior, limpia y seca y me dijo “ahora puedes decir que has llevado uno de los tangas de Liv Kristine”. Por supuesto, nunca lo olvidaré.

EM: ¿Qué es lo mejor y lo peor de trabajar con Liv Kristine?
MR: Lo mejor y lo peor, son la misma cosa, como una paradoja. Lo mejor es que, para mí, es un verdadero icono, una amiga muy querida, y todo es muy natural ¡y eso me parece una locura! Tuve que pellizcarme muchas veces, como diciendo: ¡esta es de verdad Mariël! Lo peor fue que el primer día tuve que controlarme para no agobiarme durante la sesión. Y así pude pensar en poses, ángulos, ajustes, etc., de modo que la próxima vez estaré más preparada para ello. Y, siendo un poco perfeccionista, la idea de que tan pronto como envié mis fotos editadas, no tuve ningún control sobre cuáles estaban eligiendo para el diseño del álbum y su retoque, tuve que dejarlas ir… ¡fue una sensación extraña para mí jaja!

EM: ¿Cómo sería tu sesión de fotos soñada con Liv Kristine?
MR: Ya estamos hablando de nuestra próxima sesión. Ahora que sé lo que voy a experimentar con ella, creo que la próxima vez estaré más relajada y más segura de mí misma. Ahora sé lo que podemos conseguir. Así que, mi sesión de fotos de ensueño es básicamente en un ambiente en el que Liv se sienta natural y segura, donde ella puede ser ella misma 100%. Sería estupendo si pudiéramos volver a utilizar iluminación natural, sin flashes ni complementos artificiales. Me encantaría tener un entorno que se adapte a sus ideas para este álbum. Yo ya tengo ideas, Liv también, ¡y estoy segura de que volveremos a tener éxito! Sabemos que podemos combinar nuestras ideas y crear algo juntas.

EM: ¿Qué opinas de ‘River of diamonds’?
MR: Cuando me enteré de que Liv estaba trabajando con Tommy, que también lo hace con grupos como Long Night y October Burns Black (ambos me encantan) ¡me dio un vuelco el corazón! Supe al instante que este disco sería increíble. Y, por lo que he escuchado, me encanta el sonido y el sentimiento del álbum, un poco «Sisters of Mercy-niano» de sabor melancólico. Podrás reconocer el estilo de la canción de Liv «Love Decay» y Long Night ahí dentro, ¡te trae de vuelta a temas góticos anteriores sin dejar de sonar frescos! “My immortal Day» es una de mis favoritas y ¡escuché esa canción en directo en Nagold el año pasado! Muestra cómo Liv se ha convertido en una persona fuerte y verdaderamente feliz que cree en sí misma, ¡está on fire en esta canción!

EM: ¿Qué te hizo enamorarte de la música de Liv?
MR: Para mí, lo más importante es el sonido inconfundible de su voz. Es muy delicada y angelical, pero fuerte. Clásica pero fresca, enseguida distingues su voz. Las letras de Liv son como poemas, y a veces tienes que averiguar qué significan realmente, para ella o para ti personalmente. Las letras tienen profundidad. Me enamoré de la magia que tuvo Leaves’ Eyes durante su época con la banda. Esa magia continúa en su música en solitario, especialmente en sus últimos álbumes, que son los que más me gustan (‘Libertine’, ‘Vervain’ y ‘River of Diamonds’), junto con la canción «3am». Liv tiene algo único que siempre ofrece. En Theatre of Tragedy, en Leaves’ Eyes, en su trabajo en solitario, y también en colaboraciones puntuales con grupos que la invitan a cantar. Para mí, eso es algo realmente especial.

MR: ¡Sí, estoy de acuerdo! Liv tiene el poder de unir a diferentes personas, porque todos amamos una cosa ¡su música! Estoy de acuerdo con Rocco: tiene una gran base de fans, porque ella está cerca de ellos. También incorpora a sus fans a su trabajo. Y así crea una familia muy unida. En cuanto entras en su corazón, entras en su familia. El apoyo es increíble, las conversaciones en Nagold después del concierto son profundas y la conexión es estrecha. EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): What does the chance to work with Liv Kristine means to you?
ROCCO COGLIATI (RC): It’s truly an incredible experience! Liv is one of the most important artists in my life, I grew up with her music through all of high school and it was always a dream to one day play for her. To see this dream come true is really, really special.

EM: You made a contribution in the song “True colours” by Cindy Lauper. How was the recording process? Did you do the keyboard and piano lines first and then Liv Kristine recorded her vocals or the other way around?
RC: I created an instrumental version for her and then I sent it to her, we made some adjustments and then she recorded her vocals.

EM: Were you involved in the mixing of the song as well?
RC: My contribution to the mix and master is only for the True Colours instrumental track: I arranged the piano and I arranged, recorded and produced the synthesizers you can hear in the background.

EM: Could you please tell me an anecdote about working with Liv Kristine?
RC: Making music for her was really magical. When she asked me to record for her, I was in a very deep creative block. I couldn’t create any new music, no matter how hard I tried. I got to work on her tracks and while doing it something shifted inside me and I found the energy to create again. It really felt magical, as if she was thanking me by gifting me with the new creativity I needed. That’s when I started working on my second album.

EM: I know you paid a visit to Liv in Switzerland some time ago. How was it?
RC: It was amazing! My partner’s father works in Switzerland so we sometime go visit him, and last time we made a stop in Luzern to visit Liv. She took us for a walk around Luzern and then to her favourite beer place and we had a great time chatting. Next time we go to Switzerland we’ll for sure stop by again!

EM: What’s your opinion about the album ‘River of diamonds’?
RC: I’m in love with what I’ve heard so far, and I can’t wait for the 21st of April to arrive! It really sounds like such an intimate, personal and authentic album. I think throughout all of her albums you can really hear how she felt in the time she was writing and recording, that’s one of the reasons why I admire Liv as an artist so much. In River of Diamonds I hear so much peace, joy, positivity and so much light, and I’m so glad for her and for all of us fans who get to hear this beautiful work.

EM: I think Liv has something very important that not all artists have because many of the people around her are friends with each other. I mean, Liv, Michael, Mariel, you, me, all the people that run her official fan clubs and communities and a lot of fans are friends with each other and you see that every year in Nagold and I think that makes Liv Kristine stronger as a person and as an artist. Do you agree with me? How do you see this spider web?
RC: I agree 100% with you. Her fan base is close and united, and that is also because Liv is so close to her fans. She created a second family with her music, not just for herself but for all of us who have been following her along her journey. I listen to a lot of different music, but when I listen to music by Liv I’m not only listening to an artist I love, I’m also listening to a friend and I feel the warmth of this spider web, as you say. It’s very special, not many other artists have that power.

EM: Is there any chance that you’ll be on stage with Liv Kristine and supporting her show in Nagold 2023?
RC: Maybe! I’ll wait for Liv to give any official information about that but the idea is there, we briefly talked about it in December!

EM: What is the next step forward for Ecor? Are you making some more new music or are you involved in any other project?
RC: I’m currently working on a second album, and as I told you earlier Liv contributed very much to starting this process. It will largely inspired by the North, and I’m learning some traditional vocal techniques from Iceland, Norway and Canada to better capture that. It’s in the making!

ROCCO COGLIATI (RC): ¡De verdad que es una experiencia increíble! Liv es una de las artistas más importantes de mi vida, crecí con su música durante el instituto y siempre fue un sueño para mí tocar un día para ella. Ver este sueño cumplido es muy, muy especial.

EM: ¿Has colaborado en la versión de Cindy Lauper “True colours” ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación? ¿Hiciste primero las líneas de teclado y después te mandó Liv sus voces o fue al revés?
RC: Yo creé una versión instrumental para ella y se la mandé, hicimos algunos ajustes y después ella grabó sus voces.

EM: ¿Interveniste en la mezcla de la canción también?
RC: Mi contribución a la mezcla y masterización se refiere solo a la instrumentación de ‘True colours’: hice los arreglos de piano y arreglé, grabé y produje los sintetizadores que puedes escuchar de fondo.

EM: ¿Puedes explicarme alguna anécdota de tu trabajo con Liv?
RC: Hacer música para ella fue algo mágico. Cuando me preguntó si quería grabar con ella entré en un bloqueo creativo muy profundo. No podía crear música por mucho que lo intentara. Me puse a trabajar en sus temas y, mientras lo hacía, algo cambió en mí y encontré la energía para crear de nuevo. Fue mágico, como si ella me lo agradeciera regalándome la creatividad que necesitaba. Todo eso mientras empezaba a trabajar en mi segundo disco.

EM: Sé que hace un tiempo visitaste a Liv en Suiza ¿cómo fue?
RC: ¡Fue increíble! El padre de mi pareja trabaja en Suiza y a veces vamos a visitarlo y la última vez paramos en Lucerna a visitar a Liv. Nos llevó a dar un paseo por Lucerna y luego a su cervecería favorita y pasamos un buen rato charlando ¡la próxima vez que vayamos a Suiza volveremos a parar de nuevo, seguro!

EM: ¿Qué opinas del disco ‘River of diamonds’?
RC: Estoy enamorado de lo que he escuchado hasta ahora y ¡no puedo esperar a que llegue el 21 de abril! Realmente parece un disco íntimo, personal y auténtico. Creo que en todos sus discos puedes escucharla cómo se sentía en el momento en que escribía y grababa y esa es una de las razones por las que admiro tanto a Liv como artista. En ‘River of Diamonds’ escucho mucha paz, alegría, positivismo y mucha luz y me alegro mucho por ella y por todos nosotros, los fans que podemos escuchar este hermoso trabajo.

EM: ¿Hay opciones que estés en el escenario con Liv Kristine en Nagold 2023 o que seas el artista que abra sus conciertos allí?
RC: ¡Tal vez! Esperaré a que Liv de las informaciones de forma oficial sobre todo eso, pero la idea está ahí, estuvimos hablando brevemente sobre ello en diciembre.

EM: ¿En qué está trabajando Ecor ahora mismo? ¿Estás componiendo nueva música o estás involucrado en algún nuevo proyecto?
RC: En estos momentos estoy trabajando en mi segundo disco y como te comentaba antes Liv ha participado mucho a la hora de poner en marcha este proceso. Va a estar muy influenciado por el Norte y estoy aprendiendo algunas técnicas vocales tradicionales de Islandia, Noruega y Canadá para capturarlo mejor. ¡Está en proceso!

It has been a long time since Liv Kristine published her last album ‘Vervain’ and many other works after it, on many different levels. Liv Kristine has experienced a change and she’s not the same anymore, both as a person and as an artist. Nor even her life course remained unchanged since then. ‘River of diamonds’ marks a new beginning within her recognizable figure and should be a moment of celebration for her and her followers.
Surrounded by friends and people of her trust, Liv publishes an album full of truth, pure essence and honesty to come back to settle her career.
In this interview with Liv, we broke down ‘River of diamonds’, we talked about the Nagold event, other concerts, fans and friends, and all with our eyes on the launch of the album and with our eagerness to see each other again. This is how Liv Kristine speaks about 2023.

EMPIRE MAGAZINE (EM): First of all, how are you? What’s about your personal and daily life right now? How do you feel living in Switzerland?
LIV KRISTINE (LK): Thank you so much, my dear friend. I am doing well, my family is doing well. I enjoy my „9-5“ Job with children (mostly, with special needs) at a Swiss primary school, moreover, having the time to really enjoy the release-process of „River of Diamonds“. My life has calmed down a lot since I left Germany a year ago in many ways, which was necessary after a period of a really turbulent life situation. I now wake up every morning with a huge smile on my face and in my heart, with an emotion of gratitude and freedom, being in the here and now.

EM: How was your latest show at Die Halle in Reichenbach?
LK: It was a wonderful experience. Such a lovely audience and organising team. I think the audience enjoyed our new setlist. I am lucky to have both a long-time audience and a band always backing me up. And of course I am lucky to have the endless support of Tommy Olsson who composed this outstanding and most authentic album, of my amazing husband, Michael, who is the one who really helped me to find courage to open up my heart again as an artist, to take control of my artistic values and rights, to release my sixth solo album with my trusted team, to get back on stage. After nine years. I thank my audience for being incredibly patient. Our next show is in Langenthal, Switzerland, on the very release date, 21.4.2023.

EM: “Gravity” and “Serenity” are your new classics: You had both songs on previous works (‘Skylight’ EP and ‘Have courage dear heart’). What is the reason to include again these songs in an album?
LK: Eroc (mix and master) and Tommy, including myself, had that shared feeling that these tracks still have to be heard by music-lovers around the world. To me, „Gravity“ is a composition that kind of got manifested through me. It still feels like a magic moment when I listen to it or play it live. It shines the frequency of the universe, that divine greatness and endlessness, moreover, that natural attachment and attraction which gravity provides in space and everywhere else. Tommy Olsson created something huge there for which I have no words, because the words and the melodies really found me.

EM: Osten Bergoy, Fernando Ribeiro, your sister Carmen, your husband Michael… this is your album with the major number of collaborations. Why did you decide to take all of them on the ‘River of diamonds’?
LK: The music always decides if only my own or other voices need to be present to express the feeling of the song and the lyrics. Østen is the singer of one of my favourite bands, Long Night, as well as Tommy’s friend. Fernando is a long-time dear friend who has supported me strongly after the unforeseen split with Leaves’ Eyes. Carmen, my dear sister, has always been by my side and we share the same kind of Norwegian, black humour, so there’s a lot of laughing whenever we meet. „Love Me High“ is our song, feeling blessed by life itself. These three pieces of music longed for these three special voices. Rocco, my dear friend, inspired me to cover „True Colours“, which fit to both our life situations – coming home to our true selves, thus he re-recorded it for me. Michael is a phenomena – he neither sang on a stage, nor in a studio. He never ever even thought about it, and he never had singing lessons. As his dear father passed away last summer, he found a lot of healing in John Lord’s compositions. We drove to the studio and recorded „Pictured Within“ in memory of my father-in-law. First and second take and it was manifested. It was an unbelievably beautiful moment.

EM: To be completely honest, when I read that your husband would sing on the album, I thought he would do it with growls… he looks like a tough guy, isn’t he? Ha, ha! Surprisingly, he has a beautiful voice!!! “Pictured within” and Michael are the greatest surprises of the ‘River of diamonds’ for me, without any doubt.
LK: Thank you from the heart. That means a lot to both of us. As mentioned above, having Michael’s voice, which comes from the heart, on my album is truly special. I know he looks like a really tall, big Danish Viking, however, I never met a human being with such a great empathy and inner clarity, which you can her in his voice.

EM: I’d like to ask you about “Shaolin me”. I try to relate this song to Shaolin Temple and their painful resistance. Would you concur with me? Does it refer to your past? Or maybe to your life philosophy, your resistance to pain and your inner strength?
LK: Yes, indeed, you describe it with the right words. The monks use a.o. Qi Gong and a special method of breathing with the lower abdomen to transform their bodies into armor. This allows them to withstand powerful blows, including those from dangerous and sometimes sharp objects. These abilities stem from breath and awareness. I have learned to become more aware of my soul-life through meditation, kundalini yoga and Tai Chi, Qi Gong etc. over a period of 25 years, however, at those times when I felt that life was a challenge, I intensified my meditation practices to rebuild resilience and courage, moreover, to gain mental clarity which is so important when your mind is full and blocked due to distracting circumstances. Shaolin monk training begins by trading material pleasures and worldly distractions for an ascetic lifestyle of study, physical exercise and meditation. And, above all, self-discipline is required to razor-sharpen their minds and body strength. I find the life and studies of Shaolin monks fascinating. The line in my lyrics „In this body so light, see it walk on snow without sinking in“ describes the inner frequency for me to be strong, free and clear-minded.

EM: I love the rhythm and the emotion behind “No make-up”, I think it’s an absolutely mag I love the rhythm and the emotion behind “No make-up”, I think it’s an utterly magical song. When you were no make-up is like your body naked, like something pure without secrets… Is this what you meant with the lyrics? I’m absolutely fascinated with your lyrics and the album concept.
LK: Thank you so much for pointing this out – yes, these lyrics are kind of special in both rhythm and constellation. I never sang in this way before, but it feels really freeing and creative. It pics up daily life and those thoughts entering your mind from the moment you wake up like simultaneous high-speed trains of thoughts, which trigger emotions, which cause chemical reactions in your body, which trigger new thoughts….It’s your monkey-mind. Then, as a contrast, what really plays a vital role in life is the love-relationship with yourself and how you treat others. Just that pure frequency, that pure intention of unconditional love towards yourself and those persons who meet you with an open heart and compassion. That’s the place or the soul-space where you can find silence and authenticity, where no make-up and conditioning is needed. I think it is of vital importance to shift perspective sometimes, to step out of your mind to be able to actually take control of your mind, that means learning to choose what you think and feel. This is such an important step and revelation in the process of personal development and of self-love. Moreover, you will discover that there is self-love and freedom in the acceptance of knowing that life can be both – broken and beauty. That period of time which „happens“ between what we call birth and death, is called life, with all its broken and beautiful moments of experience. Life is exactly that – „Imperfectly perfect“, which are the final words in this song.

EM: I still remember how impressive was “Maligna” in Nagold and your speech about a new beginning! You decided you play the première of this song but, why did you choose “Maligna” and “Our immortal day” for the première?
LK: „Maligna“ is a hymn to everybody who have experienced any kind of oppression or/and abuse of any kind. This song has a strong message – I want to give people the courage and strength to clarify their boundaries, to say NO to toxic personalities and treatment, and I guess it’s the first time I have ever included „fuck you“ in any of my lyrics or poems. „Our Immortal Day“ is a beautiful follow-up to „Love Decay“ which people always request at my concerts. „Our Immortal Day“ describes a soul-relationship. That frequency of love is meant to be. It’s unique, it’s yin-yang, it’s unconditional and divine.

EM: Both “Pictured within” and “True colours” piano covers are absolutely thrilling and in perfect match with your voice. I truly love your passion when you sing this kind of ballad, as well as “The rarest flower”, too. What’s special for you in these songs and when you are alone with the piano?
LK: The piano asks for this feeling and sound of intimacy. It feels like melting with the sound of the instrument. My voice just finds this special resonance with a piano ballade.

EM: Rocco Cogliati from Italy had been working with you in “True colours” and he was your special guest in the “Enter my religion” reissue. What’s special about his talent?
LK: Rocco is a dear friend and an amazing artist himself. He creates this space of intimacy when he plays the piano and when he sings that I just love. There’s so much space and tenderness in his artistic work. Sometimes he passes through Switzerland on his journeys and we get to sit down for a beer a two, which I really appreciate.

EM: I think that the front cover of the ‘River of diamonds’ is absolutely amazing, probably the best one in your solo career. What’s the concept behind this front
cover with only half of your face?
LK: The cover and the artwork are based on ideas which were developed with my husband and my beautiful friend Mariel Rohrbach. We knew about her talent and asked her to come and stay with us in Lucerne for a weekend to see if we could manifest our ideas on her camera. All this turned out to be a perfect match.

EM: What can you tell us about the experience of working with Mariel Röhrbach? I think she is an amazing photographer and a lovely woman!
LK: Yes, indeed. We soon need to book another flight to Switzerland – Mariel is amazing and she is able to catch exactly that moment when I’m about to forget that we’re actually working and taking photos.

EM: Unlike previous years, Nagold 2023 event will take place in November, not in December. This seems to be a requirement imposed by the organizer and also because December is a complicated month for everyone. Could you announce the official date for the show?
LK: Yes, the date is Saturday, 25th November, 2023. (I hope you will make it to Nagold, dear Marc!)

EM: Back in December, we were talking about the chance of doing a European Tour to promote the ‘River of diamonds’. Is it still an option? If so, would it be before or after summer?
LK: There will be a few single shows this spring, summer and fall. I hope that we will get the chance to play more shows in connection with the release of „River of Diamonds“.

EM: Metalville is your new record label. How is it to work with them? In my opinion, they are not the biggest label, but they do a great job with the bands in their
roster.
LK: My husband and I find open and frequent communication utterly important when it comes to work and cooperation. My artistic work is half-a-lifetime, highly personal and authentic, and the label that is promoting my releases has to resonate with my clear intention and with my personal situation. I love composing, singing and performing, but I also love teaching and coaching. The guys of Metalville give me this trust which is of vital importance to both Michael and me.

ANÁLISIS DE ‘RIVER OF DIAMONDS’: EL DISCO

La expectación creada en torno al nuevo disco de Liv Kristine va en aumento entre sus fans conforme se acerca la fecha de publicación, el 21 de abril a través de Metalville.
‘River of diamonds’ es su sexto disco de estudio y en todos estos años Liv nos ha mostrado diversas facetas de su personalidad musical, influencias y tesituras aunque también es cierto que, de ‘Vervain’ a esta parte sus trabajos tienden a una vertiente más oscura que tienen como referencia principal a ‘Aègis’ de Theatre of Tragedy. Sin ser lo mismo, buscan aproximarse. Y con esa premisa, sabiendo dónde está el éxito mantiene en su esqueleto compositivo a la columna vertebral, Tommy Olson, quien ya compuso ‘Aègis’ y que también ha compuesto todos los trabajos de Liv desde que esta salió de Napalm Records.
Pero si algo pone de manifiesto ‘River of diamonds’ es que la carrera de Liv Kristine empieza, por fin, a asentarse, a coger carrerilla, a ser consistente y constante. Y eso es algo muy importante para una artista de su calibre y de justicia con todo lo que ha tenido que vivir a lo largo de su vida musical. Al final, aunque sea muy tarde, el karma pone las cosas en su sitio.

Pero ‘River of diamonds’ es más que un disco, es un ejercicio de pureza, de la sinceridad más palpable. Estableciendo un símil con el nacimiento de un niño, si con ‘Skylight’ Liv volvía a nacer como artista, con ‘Have courage dear heart’ dio sus primeros pasos y con ‘River of diamonds’ echa a correr y su carrera coge una velocidad de crucero.
Antes de adentrarme en el análisis de las canciones propiamente dichas, quiero responder a quienes me cuestionan sobre la línea musical que sigue este nuevo trabajo, si mantiene las credenciales de ‘Have courage dear heart’ o si ofrece un virage hacia otros estilos. Lo cierto es que mantiene una línea continuista por cuanto el tándem Liv – Tommy se mantiene intacto, han encontrado su particular fórmula de la Coca Cola para lograr temas convincentes y a través de los cuales ir creciendo como artistas, desde el estudio y desde el escenario.
Otra cosa que sigue demostrando Liv disco tras disco es el buen gusto musical del que hace gala honrando a sus artistas preferidos y versionándolos. En su momento fueron Bruce Springsteen o Tori Amos y en esta ocasión son Cindy Lauper y Jon Lord. Quizá, que Michael, su marido, sea un gran fan de Deep Purple ha tenido algo que ver a la hora de reinterpretar juntos “Pictured within”.
De por sí los discos de Liv acostumbran a tener buen sonido, pero quizá nos encontramos ante la mejor producción de su carrera, donde todo está balanceado y logrando un equilibrio perfecto sobre el cual surfea la voz de Liv.
Otro aspecto a destacar de ‘River of diamonds’ son sus colaboraciones. Liv siempre ha escogido con acierto a sus partenaires vocales (Nick Holmes o Michelle Darkness entre otros) pero nunca había juntado a tres nombres tan relevantes dentro del Gothic Metal como Fernando Ribeiro (Moonspell), Østen Bergøy (Tristania) y Carmen Elise Espenaes (Midnattsol). Y ese hecho, además de dar caché y empaque al disco, ofrece un mayor dinamismo y una textura más amplia a las composiciones.

El colofón a este trabajo es la portada en la que aparece la mitad derecha de la cara de Liv en un primer plano que muestra un ojo precioso y la amabilidad de su rictus. En esta ocasión ha sido obra de Mariël Rohrbach, que ya ha trabajado con Liv anteriormente. Y es en el aspecto gráfico donde quiero detenerme para contarte algunas anécdotas porque la sesión de fotos se tomó en la casa en que vivían Liv y Michael hace un tiempo. En esa sesión Liv utilizó tres cambios de vestuario que estás viendo en este reportaje, el de la blusa fucsia de lentejuelas, el de la camiseta negra de pinchos con la rosa negra; y el del collar de plumas negro.
Otra anécdota es la rosa negra metálica que luce Liv en uno de los cambios de vestuario y que es especialmente significativa por cuando la ha hecho su hijo Leon, que está estudiando metalistería. Así pues podemos afirmar que se trata de uno de los trabajos más personales de la carrera de Liv Kristine, donde muchas de las personas más cercanas a ella han sido partícipes en muchos aspectos que se reflejan en el disco. Sin duda un trabajo lleno de matices y personalidades que engrandecen la figura de Liv Kristine, como artista y como persona.

ANÁLISIS DE ‘RIVER OF DIAMONDS’ CANCIÓN A CANCIÓN:

Our immortal Day (Østen Bergøy duet)
Tema muy gótico muy del estilo Sisters of Mercy. Se nota la composición de Tommy Olson. El estribillo tiene un punto a “Skylight” en los teclados y las voces de Liv. El dueto vocal con Østen Bergøy me parece maravilloso y me recuerda a ‘Aègis’ porque Østen utiliza unas voces muy suaves. Canción ideal para empezar el disco y para enamorar a los fans.

No Makeup
Tiene unas líneas vocales muy intensas y un estribillo muy elegante y delicado. Es un medio tiempo muy efectivo con voces dobladas en la segunda mitad de la canción. Como dice la canción, “Perfectly perfect” (perfectamente perfecta). Quiero escucharla y sentirla en directo.

Maligna
La cantó como primicia en Nagold en diciembre y ya entonces me pareció maravillosa. Tiembla la voz de Liv en el puente justo antes del crescendo. El estribillo se repite una y otra vez, es muy pegadizo y cuando te das cuenta lo estás cantando.

Gravity
El nuevo clásico de Liv Kristine. Una sorpresa que aparezca en ‘River of diamonds’ porque es el tercer lanzamiento consecutivo en el que aparece y en la misma versión.

In Your Blue Eyes
Tema más bailable y de estrbillo coreable que bien podría haber aparecido en ‘Libertine’. Ese “I’m coming home” es la prueba más palpable que Liv está de vuelta y que ha venido para quedarse.

River of Diamonds (Fernando Ribeiro duet)
El tema que da título al disco tiene la colaboración más sonada, la de Fernando Ribeiro. Resulta un tema delicado con la voz de Fernando quedando en segundo plano en el estribillo pero que tiene como curiosidad volver a escuchar a Fernando cantar en portugués.

Pictured Within (Jon Lord cover – Michael Espenaes)
¡Qué sorpresa y qué maravilla! Pensaba que Michael haría voces guturales y se descubre que tiene una voz preciosa y muy sensible. Háztelo mirar sino te emocionas con esta canción. Súper emocional. La canción desprende amor por los cuatro costados. Jon Lord se sentiría orgulloso de esta versión.

Shaolin Me
El inicio, muy asiático da la sensación que vaya a ser un tema duro y fuerte pero nada más lejos de la realidad. Una base rítmica repetitiva pero agradable da paso a un estribillo pegadizo. Si en la misma coctelera metemos la filosofía Zen con que Shaolin es un templo budista y a Liv Krstine, encontramos el sentido a esa estrofa de la canción donde habla de “innermost of me” (en mi interior). Un tema muy profundo e intenso en su conjunto.

Love Me High (Carmen Elise Espenaes duet)
El regusto pop de esta canción es contagioso y la conexión Liv – Carmen es más que palpable. Se entienden a la perfección y sus voces conectan con solo mirarse. Una muestra más de la magia que desprenden. Carmen es la invitada con más protagonismo en el disco. Otro verso de las que marcan el disco: “Baby you love me high”.

Serenity
Ya aparecía en ‘Have courage dear heart”. Otra canción que apunta a clásico de su discografía.

If I am Dreaming
Es una balada muy emocional y la forma de cantar de Liv me recuerda sobremanera a la versión Cathedral de “Skylight”. Maravillosa la percusión dotando de profundidad a la canción.

True Colours (Cindy Lauper cover)
Otra versión preciosa, esta vez con teclado y piano de Ecor. La dulzura de Liv resulta embriagadora cuando versiona baladas.

Lo mejor de ‘River of diamonds’: “Pictured within”, “Our inmortal day”, “No make up”. El dueto vocal con Michael Espenaes es estremecedor. Que tanta gente cerca a Liv esté presente en este disco de una manera u otra.

Lo menos bueno de ‘River of diamonds’: Que vuelva a incluir “Gravity” y “Serenity” en otro disco. Que el disco termine.

‘RIVER OF DIAMONDS’

Liv Kristine publica el próximo 21 de abril su sexto disco de estudio a través de la discográfica alemana Metalville. Desde que en 2014 publicara ‘Vervain’ no teníamos un disco completo nuevo de Liv y la espera se ha hecho muy larga. Hemos tenido pequeñas dosis de nueva música en el EP ‘Skylighy’ (2019), ‘Have courage dear heart’ (2021) y la reedición de ‘Enter my religion’ (2022); además de las distintas reediciones de Theatre of Tragedy en los últimos años.
Sin embargo, se hace extraño para sus fans que una de las grandes figuras del Gothic Metal y una de las precursoras femeninas del género esté tanto tiempo sin publicar nuevo disco y actuando. Muchos motivos han llevado a ello que no vamos a analizar ahora porque no es el momento y porque lo realmente importante es que ‘River of diamonds’ ve la luz para volver a poner de relieve que Liv Kristine sigue en estado de gracia y que sus nuevas canciones mantienen la textura de antaño.

‘River of diamonds’ es un disco variado, delicado, elegante y adictivo en el que recoge la semilla de trabajos anteriores para meterlo todo en la batidora de Tommy Olson, quien ya compusiera ‘Aègis’ de Theatre of Tragedy, y que para Liv ha compuesto ya “Skylight”, “Gravity”, “Serenity” y “Have courage dear heart”.

En Nagold, el pasado mes de diciembre, Liv ya hizo la premiére en directo de “Our inmortal day” y “Maligna” y ya dejó claro que la dinámica de las nuevas composiciones se alejaban del recién reeditado ‘Enter my religion’ y volvían a situarla una vez más en la senda de la oscuridad y en este sentido creo que se ha rodeado del equipo adecuado y probablemente del mejor entorno de su carrera en solitario. Las composiciones, mezcla y masterización de Tommy se han visto refrendadas por la colaboración en Ecor (Rocco Cogliati) en piano y teclados; Mariël Rohrbach ha conseguido unas fotografías maravillosas en las que Liv luce espectacular; y el disco tiene colaboraciones de nombres de peso dentro del Gothic como son Fernando Ribeiro (Moonspell), Østen Bergøy (Tristania) y Carmen Elise Espenaes (Midnattsol).
El track list recorre grandes momentos como ”Our immortal day”, “No makeup” o “Maligna” pero creo que los temas más sobresalientes del disco con las versiones de “True colours” y especialmente “Pictured within” con el dueto vocal con su marido Michael Espenaes y es que cuando esperaba las guturales de Michael, aparece una voz dulce y melódica absolutamente maravillosa.
Entre las doce canciones que componen el disco encontramos nuevamente «Gravity» y «Serenity», que ya aparecieron en EP’s anteriores y todo indica que esta reiteración se debe a la importancia que Liv da a estas dos canciones en su nuevo repertorio de directo y dentro de su discografía.

Tengo la impresión que el cambio de discográfica va a beneficiar a Liv porque pasa a ser una artista importante en su roster de bandas y porque al ser más pequeña que Napalm o Roadrunner le va a permitir un contacto más directo, estrecho y cercano a Stephan y su equipo. Liv ha tenido ofertas de discográficas más grandes pero es consciente que necesita un entorno de confianza y que de verdad crea en su trabajo y su talento y con Metalville lo va a conseguir.
En estos días Liv ha empezado a anunciar ya las primeras fechas de presentación de ‘River of diamonds’ en Reichenfels, Langenthal y Stella Nomine Festival; también sabemos que el concierto de Nagold de este 2023 será un sábado de noviembre y no en diciembre y podemos adelantar que se está trabajando en una gira europea para antes de verano por varios países para presentar el disco. De momento no podemos avanzar más detalles pero ve vienen meses en los que, si todo va bien, Liv va a estar muy de actualidad.
