Midnattsol + Deathdestiny + Coronatus

El 25 de mayo de 2018 Midnattsol lanzaron su cuarto disco de estudio, “The aftermath”, y tocaron su primer concierto en siete años. El recinto escogido fue el R’n’P Wiesloch, un club muy pequeño del municipio de Wiesloch, que es un pequeño pueblo de Alemania situado 13 kilómetros al sur del hermoso Heidelberg pero donde no hay transporte público y es muy difícil llegar si no tienes coche. El hecho que hubiera fiesta en los colegios de algunos sitios de Alemania también contribuyó a que solo hubieran 90 personas en el concierto. Sin embargo, el anuncio del primer concierto de Midnattsol desde 2011 atrajo fans de otro lugares como Inglaterra, Bélgica, Dinamarca y Grecia.
La sala es un pequeño club de Metal situado justo al lado de una piscina y puesto que hacía un día muy caluroso (teniendo en cuenta las condiciones climáticas de Alemania), el club se convirtió muy pronto en algo parecido a una sauna.
Como teloneros la organización escogió a dos bandas locales. Deathtiny (el nombre es una mezcla de las palabras “Death“ y “Destiny“) están comandados por la vocalista Julia Mann que hicieron un breve pero convincente concierto; y Coronatus que aparecieron en escena con dos vocalistas femeninas y uno masculino y tocaron, sobretodo, temas de su último trabajo, “Secrets of nature”.

Sobre las 22h00 entraron en el escenario Midnattsol y desde el principio resultó obvio que todavía necesitan acabar de acoplarse como banda. El batería original, Cris Merzinsky, y la bajista, Birgit Öllbrunner, dejaron la banda después del lanzamiento de “The metamorphosis melody” y es por ello que el teclista, Daniel Fischer, tuvo que cambiar de puesto y empezar a tocar el bajo y la banda tuvo que buscar un batería de sesión para los conciertos. Michael Kapelle accedió a ello para los dos conciertos de este fin de semana.
Como consecuencia de todo ello la interacción entre la banda, especialmente con la batería aún debe mejorar mucho. Ese es el motivo por el cual la batería fue a destiempo más de una vez y las guitarras tenían un trabajo excesivo para mantener las melodías que iban desgranando.
Pero el cambio más significativo en la formación es que la ex vocalista de Theatre of Tragedy, Liv Kristine, entró en Midnattsol como segunda voz de su hermana Carmen tras ser expulsada de Leaves’ Eyes, su propia banda, hace dos años.
Como un hermoso contraste al vestido blanco de su hermana, Liv vistió de riguroso negro. Con Carmen y Liv conociéndose de toda la vida, la colaboración e interacción entre ambas fue sobresaliente. A pesar de su larga ausencia sobre los escenarios (exceptuando algunos conciertos son Savn, su otra banda) Carmen demostró que está sobradamente preparada para liderar a una banda internacionalmente reputada como Midnattsol y que las más de dos décadas de experiencia de Liv les van a venir muy bien para solucionar muchos problemas como los de la batería y las guitarras de esta noche y para tapar las grietas que, desgraciadamente, no pueden esconderse de este concierto.

Puesto que el propósito del concierto era presentar “The aftermath”, la banda tocó sobretodo las canciones de éste pero también añadió las dos preferidas de los fans, “En natt” y “Nord” de ‘Nordlys’ (2008) y “Haunted” de ‘Where twilight dwells’ (2005) en el bis. Para mí los mejores momentos fueron los duetos de “Syns sang” y “The Purple sky” y cuando Liv cantó en solitario “Eitrdråpar” donde cantó las notas más altas de forma impresionante. Puesto que “Eitrdråpar” es la única canción del disco que Liv cantó sin su hermana, no pudo resistirse a hacer algunos comentarios irónicos sobre “robar” una banda a otra vocalista.
Después del concierto la banda firmó autógrafos y se hizo fotos, durante dos horas, con unos fans que pudieron comprar el nuevo disco y camisetas.
La banda también evidenció que no podían mantenerse al día con la alta calidad del disco en directo y ello comporta la necesidad de encontrar a un batería permanente y un nuevo bajista antes de planear más conciertos.

On May 25th, 2018 Midnattsol released their fourth studio album The Aftermath and played their first live show in seven years. As a venue they chose R’n’P Wiesloch, a very small metal club in the municipality of Wiesloch. Wiesloch is a small town in Germany actually just about 13 kilometers south of beautiful Heidelberg but due to the lack of public transport seemingly in the middle of nowhere and hard to get to without a car. The fact that there were school holidays in some parts of Germany also contributed to the the circumstances that there were only about 90 people in the audience. Nevertheless the announcement of the first Midnattsol concert since 2011 even attracted fans from distant places like England, Belgium, Denmark and Greece.
The venue is a small metal club right next to the outdoor swimming pool and since the weather was quite hot (for German conditions), the club felt like a sauna quite fast. As support the organizer of the concert chose two local bands. Deathtiny (the name is a mix of the two words “death“ and “destiny“) around singer Julia Mann played a short but convincing set and Coronatus entered the stage with even two female and one male vocalist and played mostly songs from their latest release Secrets of Nature.

Midnattsol came on stage around 10 pm and right from the start it was obvious that the band still needs time to cope with the recent changes in the line up. Former drummer Chris Merzinsky and bassist Birgit Öllbrunner left the band after the release of The Metamorphosis Melody. That is why keyboarder Daniel Fischer had to change to bass and the band had to find a session drummer for the live shows. Michael Kapelle agreed to support the band for the two shows that weekend. As a consequence the interaction between the band members especially with the drums is still to be improved a lot. That is the reason why it happened more than once that the drums were out of time and the guitars had a lot to do to keep the melodies of the tracks running.
But the most significant change in the line up is former Theatre of Tragedy singer Liv Kristine who joined her sister’s band as a second vocalist after she had been kicked out of her own band Leaves’ Eyes two years ago. As a beautiful contrast to her sister’s white dress, Liv was dressed all in black. With Carmen and Liv knowing each other their entire lives, the collaboration and interaction between the two sisters was outstanding. Despite her long absence from stage (apart from some concerts with her second band Savn) Carmen showed that she is definitely able to lead an internationally well-reputed band like Midnattsol and it was Liv’s two decades of experience that helped a lot to cover up for the many misunderstandings between the drums and the string instruments and to literally paper over the cracks that sadly could not be denied.

Since the concert was meant to be the release party of The Aftermath, the band mostly played songs from their latest album and the two fan favorites En Natt i Nord from Nordlys (2008) and Haunted (as an encore) from Where Twilight Dwells (2005). My personal highlights were the duets Syns Sang and Purple Sky as well as Liv’s solo song Eitrdråpar, in which she hit the high notes in a very impressive way. Since Eitrdråpar was the only song which Liv performed without her sister, she could not resist to make some ironic remarks on “stealing“ a band from another vocalist.
After the show the band gave autographs and took photos with the audience for almost two more hours. In the meantime the fans were able to purchase the new album and T-Shirts at the merchandise stand outside. The band also made it clear that they were aware of not yet being able to keep up with the high quality of the album in the live concerts and therefore have drawn the consequence to now put all effort on finding a permanent drummer and a new bass player before they can plan more concert dates.
